Sonny Jurgensen RIP

I remember him playing when we could see an NFL game on TV, not many tv channel options in Canada then.. He stood out to my young mind then and still stands out in my memory now.

Jurgensen was a typical big-name quarterback from his era who had a larger than life personality. He backed it up, too, leading the NFL in passing yardage five different seasons. His TD to interception of 255/189 was excellent for that time as well, even though it doesn't seem that great now. Jurgensen played when the NFL threw a lot less but a lot more often downfield, and he threw the ball as well as anyone.

I barely remember him, more from NFL films but he was renowned for his smooth ball, his red hair, his "portly" build and Scandinavian ancestry.

PS the reason why you couldn't watch the NFL on Canadian TV is that the league was blacked out until the CFL season ended. I recall my favorite time was the end of the CFL season and the NFL season would begin on Canadian television. This was the broadcast rule until at least the early 80's.

I have memories of historic CFL games from a good 2 or 3 years earlier than NFL games because of this reason as I didn't know how to use coat hangers and other devices to get NFL games on Buffalo stations until I was much older.
