From ESPN:

On the second play of a 9-on-7 drill pitting the Giants offense against the Jets defense, Shockey got in a tussle with defensive backs Erik Coleman and Oliver Celestin, and soon all three players were throwing wild punches.

Coleman and Celestin pulled the Giants tight end to the ground and Jets linebacker Jonathan Vilma jumped on top, touching off a melee involving numerous players from both teams. Order was restored after a few minutes.

Gee,why does this not suprise me.Alot of players around
the league hate Shockey because he is a *******y white boy
who doesn't take crap from anyone.I like Shockey and wish
we would have more tough, hard nosed white athletes like
him. That is the mental toughness needed to be a star.He
is intimidated by no one.He should have a big year assuming
Eli can get him the ball on a consistant basis!

I don't think you should worry about that last part whitelightning. He likes throwing to his tight ends, and I doubt he will change anytime soon. I too wish we had more Shockeys!

I appreciated the fact that Johnathan Vilma jumped in to help him. Vilma is black.

Vilma and Shockey are old Univ. of Miami teammates. UM has a very big
place in the heart of any player who went there....a us aganist the
world attitude.

I'm not quite sure what some of the Jets said to Vilma after the fact,
but I'd like to be a fly on the wall for that conversation.

Vilma was a team captain at UM and respected for his work ethic, not really the trouble maker type.

He will be an all-pro (barring injuury of course) for years to come.

Shockey is great. Talented with a bit of an attitude. Not afraid to mix
it up with anyone. Shockey got into a brawl on his very first day with
the Giants in the team caferteria of all places.

His willingness to fight and never back down is something he got playing at UM.

If you can play and survive at UM, you can easily play and survive at the NFL level.

Shockey was just another all american recruit when he arrived at UM.

He left as a first round draft pick with hall of fame talent and a brashness to never back down.

You could say UM made him into a Man.
