Todd Abernethy has extended his lead in the SEC in assists to .66 assists per game! Overall, he is now 15th in the country at 5.83! Jared (Share) Jordan is leading the nation with 8.8 assists per game, a full 1.5 assists more than the 2nd place guy.
In assist to turnover ratio, Todd has 3.31, also leading the SEC. Tennessee's Dane Bradshaw is second with 2.60, and Mississippi State Freshman Ben Hansbrough is 5th with 2.02. Isn't it strange that the only SEC whites who can be in the top 5 are.
Jimmy Chitwood pointed out to me that the number 2 guy in assists (5.17)in the SEC, Arkansas' black Gary Ervin, is way down the list in assists to turnovers at 9th with 1.71. Interesting stats indeed.
Elston Turner:A Real Rebel is Honored as anSEC Legend.
What this article doesn't mention is the fact that Elston grabbed one of the Confederate battle flags after winning the SEC title in 1981, and ran around the arena with it celebrating the Rebels victory. This very un-PC act bythe black star at Ole Miss is almost completely covered up now. It was a very symbolic act from my perspective, not only because his actionswent against the Black Student Union at Ole Miss, but Elston also showed thousands of people that black people can and should accept the Confederate Battle flag with pride as part of their history. His display of unbridled enthusiasm showed this in a way that few other acts have. Congratulations Elston!
OXFORD, Miss. -- Former Ole Miss star Elston Turner will be part of the SEC Basketball Legends 2007 class to be honored at the conference tournament March 8-11 in Atlanta's Georgia Dome.
A four-year letterwinner from 1978-81, Turner captained the Rebels to their first ever SEC Tournament Championship and the program's NCAA Tournament debut in 1981. The forward from Knoxville, Tenn., garnered All-SEC honors his final two seasons and was a unanimous first team choice as a senior, when he was second in the conference in scoring with a 20.6-point average. Turner still ranks second all-time at Ole Miss in rebounds (828) and fourth in points (1,805).
His stellar collegiate days in the Red and Blue led to a career in professional basketball that has spanned more than two decades. Turner was selected by Dallas in the second round of the 1981 NBA Draft and played eight seasons in all - three with Dallas, three with Denver and two in Chicago. He later entered the NBA coaching ranks and enjoyed a six-year stint as an assistant with the Sacramento Kings.
Each SEC Basketball Legend will be recognized at halftime of his institution's first game at the tournament. This marks the ninth year of the basketball legends program.
