please note the emphasized portion above ... Sam Zenner actually ran that 10.55 in the Sectional Final (with a strong tailwind pushing him), but he did make it to the State Meet as the fastest qualifier.
at the AA (big schools) State Championships, Sam ran a 10.83 (into a -1.8 headwind) in the prelims for the fastest time, and then he followed it up with a 10.84 despite an even STRONGER headwind (-2.7) to win the State Title.
the gold medal in the 100-meters was just the beginning. Sam went on to win THREE gold medals, setting two records along the way in his first-and-only State Championship Meet.
you see, he was also part of a state-record-setting 4x200 (1:26.91) AND 4x100 (41.52) relay teams. in the 4x100, his team was trailing when he got the baton on the anchor leg ... and he sucked the opposition down for a storyteller type happy ending.
the state-record-setting overachieving, blue-collar, hard hat quartet
it was Sam's first-and-ONLY year to run track.
the supposed "reason" that Zenner didn't get recruited by big-time schools was that he lacked speed. for example, it was reported that he wasn't "as fast as his brother" and that his impressive on-field performance was due to "heart and toughness." well, perhaps the title as Fastest Man in Minnesota should give lie to that ridiculous claim. he is also a terrific sprinter in the pool, as one of the top five swimmers in the state over 100- and 200-meters, showcasing his overall athleticism.
but since when do facts matter to the Caste System?
