Sam Hubbard was named starting right defensive end on the Bengals' first training camp depth chart, a not unexpected development given how well he played as a rookie last year as a rotational player. Now that Marvin X is finally gone, maybe Alex Erickson will also get some significant playing time, as mentioned recently in the Erickson thread in the Bengals forum.

I expect Hubbard to get lots of tackles and a fair amount of sacks as well. Justin Smith might be a good comparison.

Good news for Hubbard! Was a beast as a Buckeye and had a great rookie season. Don't expect a Sophomore Slump from him.

New staff seems to recognize Erickson's talent, plus AJ Green is injured for next 2 months. Again should see more targets.

Hope springs eternal, or maybe it’s summer hope in the Caste NFL. It certainly seems like the new regime with be better for Whites but who knows; they could still be worse.

Marvin X softened his “no Whites” stance in his later years. He often fielded all White or majority White offensive lines. Always had a White QB and TE and had players like Vigil, Hunt, Hubbard, Burkhead, Erickson, Nelson, Fedejelem and others I’m forgetting. Overall not bad but the problem was many of these got buried on the depth chart with little chance of moving up.

I guess time will tell if the Bengals go in the right direction or down the Caste hole.

Sam was the best defensive lineman in the league in Week One. He had a monster game, just the beginning as he becomes a full-fledged star in 2019.

Hubbard did everything he could to help his team be successful, finishing with 10 tackles, two sacks for 16 yards, four quarterback hits and two tackles for loss, but the Bengals fell short, 21-10, in their opener against a traditionally strong Seahawks team.

Is Bengals' Sam Hubbard headed for a breakout with double-digit sacks?

A few members of the Cincinnati Bengals — headed up by Joe Burrow — have been on the receiving end of nearly unending praise and had breakout whispers around them since the draft.

Now it’s Sam Hubbard’s turn.

Hubbard, going into his third season, slots as a double-digit sack breakout candidate for Joe Marino at The Draft Network:

“Sam Hubbard may have been the seventh defensive end drafted in 2018 but that hasn’t stopped him from recording the most sacks of any defender in his draft class. After logging six sacks as a rookie, Hubbard produced 8 1/2 in 2019 and has quickly developed into a fixture up front for the Bengals’ defense.”

Hubbard, unlike a big chunk of his defense, didn’t have a ton of problems last year making the transition to Lou Anarumo’s scheme. Besides the 8.5 sacks, he put up 19 pressures while only missing 6.2 percent of his tackles (he missed 13.3 percent as a rookie).

It’s got to be encouraging for the Bengals to have a player on a list alongside the likes of Chase Young, Brian Burns and even Nick Bosa considering he was only a third-round pick. Even better, he’s a local kid and one of those core high-energy leaders Zac Taylor’s staff loves.

Besides Hubbard’s natural development track, Cincinnati added D.J. Reader to the heart of the defensive line and remade the linebacker unit, two other features that should help borderline guarantee he’s headed for 10-plus sacks.

I'm very excited for Hubbard's 3rd season. Double digit sacks is definitely something I'd expect to see from him.

It was on the basis of his 40 time that he was thought of as unathletic. But the 3 cone is more important to a defensive lineman than the 40. Hubbard was plenty athletic in the ways that counted for a defensive lineman.

Hubbard is laughing his way to the bank! Just signed a 4yr 44million dollar extension. He's been very productive racking up 16.5 sacks and tackles through his first 3 seasons and is also stellar against the run .
