If you're a fight fan who can watch a fight no matter how lame or
boring it may be, John Ruiz is fighting James Toney for Ruiz'
heavyweight belt tonight on HBO, 9 PM CST.

I am definitely no fan of Ruiz' fighting style, and promised myself I'd
never pay for another ppv match in which he is the main event, but
tonight's fight is free, and I can't help but hope the "Quiet Man"
knocks out James "Loud Mouth" Toney.

Heaven help us if Toney becomes only one of three middle weights to
ever win a heavyweight belt. He'll never shut up!

:::SPOLIER ALERT:::

If you missed it, Ruiz came out punching and liimited his clutching
throughout the fight. Unfortunately, I think it cost him the match.
Toney won by unanimous decision, which was a fair one IMO, despite a
knockdown scored against Ruiz when Toney stepped on his foot and pushed
Ruiz down. But not counting it as a knockdown wouldn't have altered the
outcome either way.

Of course all the announcers quickly announced that Toney would make
short work of either of the Klitschko's., 'cept for Larry
Merchant, who unequivocally disagreed. Would make an interesing fight,
either way.

James Toney is a big-mouthed overblown middleweight. He is old and passed his prime, which is bad news if he faces either of the Klitschko's.How can a natural middleweight stand up to the power of a heavyweight, particularly these days with so many giants out there.Guys like Toney and Roy Jones can pad their records as heavyweights against the likes of John Ruiz, but once they step in the ring against a legitimate power-puncher,look out.

I imagine it will be a case where he runs into the Mack truck that is Klitchko.

Don King and James Toney on the same telecast! Aaaahhh!!!

Are there two guys that epitomize what's wrong with
sports more than King and Toney? I doubt it.

Before the fight Don King actually said that Vitaly "is no good."
What a creep.

I understand both fighters were grossly out of shape and overweight. Not a chance against the Klitschco's. Toney knows he can't beat either of them and he won't fight them.

I think that's why it will be hard for Vitale to unify the title, cause a black guy(s) is too scared to fight him.

Should Toney muster up enough courage to fight one of the Klitschko's,in this case it would probably be Wlady, the fight would probably take place sometime late summer,by that time Toney will be 37 and and even fatter than he was last night.I can see Wlady winning the fight much like he did against Castillo last week.He will keep Toney at the end of jab and use his right when the opportunity arises.Wlady has a major reach and height advantage,Toney is only 5'11,and it will be only a matter of time before Wlady catches him.Don't buy into the typical boasting that will come from Toney's mouth before the fight, just look at Toney when the fighters are in the centre of the ring just as the fight is getting ready to start, you will see fear.

I'll even go so far as to say that Toney will quit on his own. When Toney fought Jirov at cruiserweight there were a couple ofoccasions after a tough exchange it looked as though Toney wanted to walk away, but I guess the fighter in him wouldn't allow that and he ended up winning that fight.Against Wlady when Toney tastes a steady diet of stiff jabs, left hooks and rights,Toney will not think about quitting,he will do it.End of night and end of career.

Your probably right speedster. I think the brothers Klitchko will dominate for a while. They will at least be a force to be reckoned with.

Did you even see the fight ?. I remember Toney LAUGHING at Jirov between rounds and Dominating Jirov in that match. Jirov lost that match badly he won 4 rounds at the most .

But you right Toney was so discouraged outsmarting and outboxing Jirov that he wanted to quit
smiley36.gif
. Tell me exactly where it seemed that Toney wanted to quit since i have the fight on DVD and have seen it at least 30 times and at NO POINT WAS TONEY DISCOURAGED IN THE RING.

I'm so glad that I brought some humour to your life.As far as the fight goes,it was in the middle rounds where Toney steps back and looks as though he needs a break. The fight was close,it was the last round where Toney scores the knockdown, therefore winning the round 10-8,maybe 10-7,that he wrapped it up.You've seen the fight at least 30 times,eh.Hmm,you must be a big Toney fan.

I like to see a master boxer in action. And The fight was not close

round 1 Toney

round 2 Jirov barely

Round3 Toney Jirov warned for low blows

Round 4 Jirov

Round 5 Big round for Toney Jirov staggered

Round 6 Jirov did just enough to win could argue that Toney won it

Round 7 Toney

Round 8 10-8 round Toney Deduction for low blows from Jirov

Round 9 Jirov

Round 10 Toney Jirov Staggered again

Round 11 Toney

Round 12 10-8 Toney Jirov KD

Jirov won no more then 4 rounds

The fight was''nt close at all it just seemed close to some because Jirov Threw alot of punches.

THROWING PUNCHES AND LANDING THEM ARE TWO DIFFERENT THINGS.

Jirov has had problems with his endurance ever since he came to the U.S.. The worst move he could ever make is jumping to heavy weight. He doesn't have the power to take that punishment and he seems to not try to go to the body as much. Toney on the other hand is suppose to be fighting chris byrd in by the end of this year. Toney doesn't stand a chance. Byrd is a better counter puncher and works the body much better.

So that's it then.By simply giving your analysis, anyone who didn't agree with you before now has to be won over,100%.I don't think so.Boxing is so subjective, that you can have 50 people see the same fight and have 25 go one way and 25 go the other. To prove my point,I was surfing the web the other night to see what the so called "experts" thought of that fight and to see if any agreed with my take on it.I found a review on it at Boxing Times.com by a fellow named John Gregg and he had the fight closer than I did at 114-113 for Toney. He also claimed that most boxing insiders figured that Toney would have needed to at least score a knock down in that last round to win the fight, which he did.On the other hand there others who will agree with you,Pugnus. But by simply giving your take round by round isn't winning me over, noway. You actually had it pretty close yourself until the last few rounds.I'd be interested to get other people's opinions about this fight from this board. One more thing on the subjectiveness on boxing.Leonard-Hagler.Good fight, fairly close, but I thought Leonard won with room to spare, while others thought Hagler got robbed,or if Leonard did win it was a razor-thin decision.I totally disagree. What do you think?

James Toney has NO CHANCE against Vitali Klitschko.Vitali Klitschko would demolish toney within 5 rounds.

p.s as far as the jirov/toney fight. I scored the fight a draw like harold lederman did.the fight was very close and it was a draw.how someone could say toney won a lopsided decision is beyond me.by the way in case u really watched the fight.jirov scored a knockdown against toney by a bodyshot but HBO camers disguised it.watch the replay and the fight very closely.the judges were handpicked in toney's favor.jirov was set up in that fight.tommy brooks was fired as jirov's trainer right after that fight.he wanted jirov to lose just like the ref, judges and HBO wanted jirov and any other white fighter to lose.bunch of damn racist anti-white bigots they are!!!!

Jirov scored a KD by a bodyshot ???? .

Everything was setup against Jirov ????

Jirov lost because Toney was the better boxer.

Jirov appeared to be doing better then he was doing because of the his output . Thrwing and landing are two different things.

Jirov would Throw about Six punches to Toney's 3 or 4 but the difference was that almost all of those six punches would be blocked and Toney would conect with at least half his punches. Toney had a

Toney also wisely started every round well and ended every well knowing that judges look at what what a fighter does at the start of a round and what he does at the close of a round the most. Check the fight again you will notice that in the last 30 seconds and first 30 seconds of the round Toney uppes his workrate to catch the judges eye.

Toney also let Jirov bully him to the ropes so he could Counter him Toney actually waved Jirov in at points so that Jirov would rush in Toney would block his punches and then come back with the hurtful counters.

And at no point did Jirov KD Toney with a bodyshot The worts thing that happened was that Toney SLIPPED on a wet spot in the ring and the judge correctly did'nt judge it a KD Toney gloves never even touched the canvas.

Speedster, I thought Jirov was comfortably ahead in that fight as apparently did most others who saw the fight. He simply choked in the last round. Pugnus, Black Guy, whoever - is James Toney the next great black hope?

Does anybody in their right mind think he could be either of the Klitchskos? Bring him on.

Leonard won it Hagler did to little to late . A lot of guys opnions are biased because of their personal feelings for Leonard. The guy was a blackmailing bastard at timesbut Leonard did win that fight clearly. Though he should have given Hagler a rematch.

Is anybody surprised by this.James Toney allegedly failed a doping test for a banned substance, possibly the anabolic steroid nandrolone. He could be suspended for up to two years and be stripped of his WBA title. It is to laugh.
