Oakland shortstop Bobby Crosby won it in the AL, outfielder Jason Bay in the NL (the first Pittsburgh player ever to win, which is one of those hard-to-believe trivia facts, like no Tampa player ever returning a kickoff for a touchdown):

I was a little stunned when their names were announced - not that
they don't deserve accolades. I was expecting spine-cracking
convolutions to hand one or both awards to black or brown players.

The Pittsburgh Tribune Reviews sports writer,Joe Rutter reports that, Jason Bay won the "Jackie Robinson" National League Rookie of the year award! Tues. Nov. 9 editon.

There were other white players in contention besides the two winners. Khalil Greene finished second to Bay in the NL.
