Hopefully Riley will make some noise this year. Right now, he's listed as second string WR. There are 3 starting WR spots at Florida this year, so he might be able to move up if given opportunities to shine. We'll see.

Florida is the only one of the Big Three in that state to have had a white starter at WR in the past 15 or so years. But Chris Doering (who was all-state in high school) was a walk-on who didn't start until halfway through his junior year -- and who then promptly smashed several SEC single season records as a senior. Travis McGriff didn't start until he was a fifth year senior, and he too had ahuge year. Will Cooper have to follow the same long, tedious path before he is allowed an opportunity to start?

What is the status of this kid? I watch the Florida games and see 3 and 4 receiver sets multiple times and he is never one of the receivers. Is he injured? He put up good numbers early on in the season and seems to have disappeared.

Florida outfielder/wide receiver Riley Cooper is expected to have a much greater role in the Gators offense in 2009.


DD.comment: Some have suggested Cooper, who was a 4 or 5 star recruit in football and a top Major League prospect coming out of high school, may jump to pro baseball and leave school this summer. We don't see that happening for several reasons. One, he's Tim Tebow's best friend and won't leave when both could have career years. Also, he's a much better football prospect than most give him credit for due to his size, speed and overall receiving skills. Obviously, in Florida's offense (with so many stars) it was hard for an outside receiver, who ran deep a lot, to rack up big numbers. Finally, Urban Meyer failed in his attempt to make it as a Major League Baseball player in the 1980's (Atlanta Braves organization), so we are sure he'll advise Riley to proceed with extreme caution before giving up football for good.

NEW ORLEANS â€" Early in the season, Florida coach Urban Meyer predicted that receiver Riley Cooper would have a decision to make at the end of the season â€" whether to stick with pro baseball after signing a contract over the summer with the Texas Rangers or concentrate on the NFL.





That prediction appears to be coming true. Cooper said today that he is "definitely'' thinking about giving up on a pro baseball career to play in the NFL, instead. He said he hasn't heard from the Rangers since last summer.





"I must not mean that much to them. . . . Hopefully they contact me, I'm not going to contact them,'' said Cooper, who has 44 receptions for 780 yards and eight touchdowns this season.





He is supposed to report for spring training in March but said he can give his signing bonus back and would be cleared to concentrate on football.





He plans to play in the Senior Bowl and go to the NFL's predraft combine workouts in Indianapolis.





"I do think I'm definitely going to have a decision to make,'' Cooper said. "I'm going to train hard, show up at the combine, hopefully run a good 40 (yard dash), hopefully run a 4.3, 4.4 ... and hopefully my draft stock goes up a lot.''





Cooper said he is definitely looking harder and harder at playing football instead of baseball.





"I wouldn't say it's because I love it more because I've been playing both for so long,'' he said. "But maybe the money will be better. I think my mindset is a football player. I kind of struggle with failure in baseball and kind of get frustrated with it.'

Cooper is a great WR who should easily be a 1st or 2nd round pick with his size, speed and hands. Where Riley Cooper is drafted and what kind of opportunities he's allowed will tell us if Jeff Samardzija made the right call to play MLB instead of taking his chances in the Caste FL since both athletes are of similar size, talent, color and both starred for big time college teams.

Cooper had an amazing last game for Florida. He had about 180 yards receiving including a long 70+ yard TD! The aforementioned- followed by running something like a 4.35 at the NFL combine- could lift him as high as the 1st round!

Riley Cooper is a guy that has slipped even a little bit under our radar. I try to be as unbiased as possible when watching college games and even when doing so I see this kid as uncoverable in the NFL if he can realize his upside potential. I go to UC and get to see Dominique Battle on a regular basis when he is practicing on Nippert Field. He is easily a 4.4 electronic forty guy and an extremely gifted athlete who will eventually be an NFL cornerback. This was the same cornerback Riley Cooper outran with considerable ease on his 70 yard Touchdown reception during the Sugar Bowl. When Riley reached full speed he seemed to have the same stride frequency with about a 20% longer stride than the speedy Dominique Battle. Ridiculous or not the only NFL receiver I can think of with a similar height/speed/skills combo is Randy Moss.

Matt Jones as a #1 reveiver would be unstoppable. Too fast and tall. He also has amazing vision and depth perception, and is impossible to track down in the open field. I wish he ran some track because he'd run sub 10.5 in the 100 and sub 6.8 in the 60 on natural ability alone. He was a sick basketball player too.

Sam McGuffie also needs to do the decathlon now that I think of it. He's a nasty long jumper, hurdler, and sprinter. Not sure how he'd throw but he'd make up for it in the other events. Easily over 7000 pts.

I still find it amazing that a WR with the talent and potential that Matt Jones has couldn't make an NFL team this year. Almost unbelievable... EVERY White athlete should take notice especially at caste unfriendly positions. There's NO room for error if you get past all the caste obstacles and play in the NFL. Cooper is a good kid so I seriously doubt he'll ever have these kind of behavior problems. The only thing the caste system can say negatively about him is that he's "injury prone."

Excellent point JReb1. I couldn't agree more. Matt Jones has gotten screwed so bad that it just doesn't make sense. Even with the Caste System. If he doesn't return in 2010, then Matts Career is over. It might already be over because of the stupid league and how they run it. Whites always come up at the short end of the stick.

Riley Cooper is an amazing athlete. They still will doubt him though because of his skin disease. He is fighting an uphill battle just like most whites unless they play qb or the punter postions. The NFL can really be a joke at times. I prefer college anyday of the week.

well I think Ive heard it all. Watching a UF game the announcers were talking about Riley Cooper's speed and how anyone who works with Florida will tell you he can run step for step with guys like Jeff Demps and Chris Rainy (Jeff Demps runs a 4.3 and I think a 10.01 100 meter dash) then they talked about how he made a key block for Brandon James's kickoff return for a td, and then outran him to the endzone. The praise he got was "Riley Cooper is stupid fast" What the hell does that even mean?

Yeah..it's a compliment... I always make sure to tell everybody how fastCooper is..that he won't be ever belabeledpossession/slot reciever!

Along with 80 yard TD in the Sugar Bowl.....his 60 yard TD vs So Carolina earlier this season; on a quick strike pass he had an effortless stride racing down the fieldat 6'3" 215 vs the 5'10" corner-blacks; whowere not gonna come close to catching him!

Honestly with his size/speed/physical type of play, Cooper should go in the first round, no later than early 2nd, if he were the right skin tone that is. 40 yards away from getting 1000 yards, averaged 18 yards per catch. There were quite a few times where he was open deep and had plenty of separation from a defender but Tebow threw to Hernandez instead, I guess he probably didn't see him open for what ever reason, like pressure coming, it happens to every qb but the announcers made sure to point out every mistake Tebow made. Cooper could honestly be like a combo of Fitz/Moss wrapped into one.Edited by: dwid

Florida's Cooper opts for the gridiron and not the diamond

Could Florida wide receiver Riley Cooper be catching passes again from quarterback Tim Tebow in the not-so-distant future?



While his days as Tebow's favorite target in Gainesville are over, and the likelihood of the two landing on the same pro team are slim, Cooper officially decided on Monday to remain on the football field rather than go back to the baseball diamond, announcing that he would bypass his baseball career to pursue one in the NFL.



"Football's definitely the route I want to take,"Â￾ Cooper told the Associated Press. "Toward the last couple of weeks of the football season, I knew that's what I wanted to do. That's my makeup, my mentality. I'm just a football player, not a baseball player."Â￾


Cooper, a Texas Rangers selection in the 25th round of the major league draft, said he has been told that he could be drafted anywhere between the second and fourth rounds, but added that he believes he has more speed than front office personnel may think.


"They've got me down as a 4.5 in my 40,"Â￾ Cooper said. "The way I look at it is, all I can do is go up. I'm not a 4.5."Â￾


A second-team All-SEC pick, Cooper led the Gators in 2009 with 961 receiving yards and nine touchdowns.


The 6-3, 214-pounder began preparations for the Senior Bowl on Monday along with Tebow, his former roommate at UF.


So how did Cooper think Tebow fared in his first practice?


"I thought he did really well,"Â￾ Cooper said. "The passes to me were good except one when he got hit in the back. Other than that, I thought he did well. He did a good job under center. He looked crisp."Â￾

Cooper should run in the low to mid 4.4 range at worst. He has a chance to break 4.4 as well and he can be a legit deep threat in the league. His size(6'3) is another great asset.
