Well it had to happen a black hockey player that needs to draw attention to himself.Back-up goaltender Ray Emery of the Ottawa Senators.First he invited photographers to come down to a tattoo parlour and watch him get some body art then he was going to colour his hair platinum blonde and to the amusement of his teammates he swallowed some sort of bug.Now he caused some controversy by painting his hero on his goalie mask. His hero being that great role model for blacks everywhere the one and only Mike Tyson.Ottawa G.M.John Muckler had a talk with Emery about the mask and although he mentioned to Emery about Tyson's less than sterling past he didn't demand that Emery remove the image.Emery decided on his own to have the mask painted over with a different image at the teams expence ofcourse.I'm surprised this didn't get any mainstream attention.I could hear the cry of racisism being used if this was not hockey.

St Louis or Edmonton(?) had a black goalie a few years ago. Ray Emery sounds like the Dennis Rodman of hockey. I can't wait till he enriches hockey with his culture.

There are two other black NHL goalies. In fact I hadn't heard of Emery until Speedster's post.

Kevin Weeks is on the Rangers and Fred Brathwaite is on Columbus. Both are backups. Weeks has really kicked around the league, sort of like a white running back in the NFL, but started at times for Carolina and Tampa. Brathwaite is strictly backup material.

I can remember Sports Illustrated a few years ago running a piece about the best athletes in each sport. Weeks was the NHL's representative -- what a surprise.

Hellooo, Speedster ! Gents ! A Topic of Some Import !

The NHL black goalie phenomenon. It has that familiar odor to me, the double-standard. Mssrs. Weekes and Emery produce a slew of "soft goals" every month that irritate fans ... and maybe coaches and GM's? Especially Kevin Weekes, who frequently negates an excellent Rangers' effort by letting in some softies.

I have seen interviews with Braithwaite and Weekes, each is well spoken and reasonable, not bad as NHL teammates. The arrival on the scene of a bonehead like Emery was predictable, inevitable. The Senators are a superb elite team, and simply don't need an Emery on the squad. I bet an Alfredsson or Martin Havlat quietly wish they had a better backup to Dominic Hasek.

Here's the rub: North America is absolutely CRAWLING with top-notch white hockey goalie talent. Minor league hockey has just bizillions of goalies waiting for their chance to crack an NHL roster. Of the three black gentlemen spake of above, Mr. Braithwaite is the most competent, and is a reasonable backup NHL goalie. The other two fellows bring fans to groaning quickly, "Oh no here he goes again."

There are excellent white goalies in the AHL and other minor leagues who wait their turn for an NHL shot. Being a media darling of the chosen caste helps an Emery vault over other gents with better performance.Edited by: Realgeorge

The best and the only real black goalie who ever plays hockey was grant fuhr and I really don't think that tomorrowthere will be a another great or good black goalie like him. For sure he is not the best goalie of a time but from my point of view he was quite good.

Hello Lokkon! Great to Hear from You !

Grant Fuhr was a consummate professional and gentlemen. He was part black and had other ancestry, there was lots of documentation of it in Sports Illustrated, Hockey News, and other sources.

Fuhr was totally devoid of the In-your-Face defiance and arrogance that is typical of many superstar black athletes these days, especially NFL and NBA types. Fuhr was talented and disciplined, loved and respected by Oilers teammates. Essentially, he was totally assimilated into white Canadian society.

The NHL should be so lucky as to have one or more Grant Fuhrs in the league. Most of the blacks in the current NHL are good guys, excellent teammates. There are a few bozos, and we know who they are. Well, even Jeremy Roenick can sound like a jackass when giving interviews, so Mr. Emery is not alone as a bad apple in the NHL.

NHL.com had a messiah like write up on Emery the other day. Now that Hasek is injured Emery has been playing every game. Ottawa is probably going to be the team to beat or maybe Carolina in my opinion. The first thing I thought when I read this article is the announcers stumbling over each other to praise Emery once the playoffs start.

The Ottawa Senators are doing what they usually do, that is, having a good season. They usually crack come playoffs. Without Hasek in goal I doubt they will win the conference finals, but who knows. Having a few good games-even having a good season- does not make a starting goaltender. Coaches want consistency and a starter can wind up as back up before he knows it. Emery has yet to prove he's a starter but we shall see.

I have to give Emery his due for holding his own so far. He has at least proven he belongs in the NHL, rather than thay goon league in Quebec but it's still too early for anybody but a half-assed sportswriter to call him a star.

Ray Emery has fallen apart. He couldn't stop a beach ball with
a surf board! I do realize that some key players were absent at
the end of this season, but Emery has been the weakest link by
far. If Hassek isn't back by the first round, they will be gone!

Ottawa is up 3-1 against Tampa Bay. Watching Emery the last three weeks of the season, he was very sharp. Seems he has quieted down the "gross" routine and is concentrating on playing hockey. If anything, the Hasek groin debacle is disappointing. He might not ever play again in the NHL.

As for a black goaltender who ain't getting it done, its Mr. Weekes in New York. Weekes is more pleasant than his counterpart in Ottawa, but he has been a sieve the past month. A pretty good Rangers' regular season is down the tubes.

Game one, round two. Ray Emery stops 16/23 shots against
Buffalo. So, is he black? Or does he just have a tan from the
goal light?

Game three, round two. Emery stops 21/24 shots. This was his
strongest game yet. Emery lacks the lateral movement and
puck awareness skills to play in the NHL. All of his success is
due to the Ottawa's supreme defensive lineup. Now that the
senators are faced with a goalie that is practically unbeatable,
every mistake that Emery makes is now magnified.

Living in upstate NY, I receive the CBC broadcast of Hockey
Night In Canada. I live by the words of Don Cherry, but in the
case of assessing the abilities of Emery, "Grapes" is dead
wrong. When your team outshoots your opponent three games
in a row, and you have no wins to show for it, a large percent of
your problem lies with the goaltender. Coach's Corner will not
acknowledge this. McClean and Cherry keep saying Emery
never has a chance. Even the media in Canada is afraid to be
critical of minorities in sports.

If you read my posts previous I said the Senators were going to choke in the playoffs like they always do and Emery was going to be a major contribution to that stifling. I was correct. Not that impressive though, others may have predicted the same. P.C. Ottawa was so sure that a coach and goalie change was all they needed. It wasn't a goalie change they needed, per se, they may have needed a goalie improvement and they had one until Hasek was injured, but a change to a porous minor league back-up was a big step down.Edited by: Maple Leaf

Game five, round two. Emery stops 18/21 shots. The last goal
the Senators gave up was a short handed, coast-to-coast,
overtime goal by a rookie. CHOKE!!!

In a post game interview, Alfredson stated that their losses
were due to a poor offensive performance. In other words, we
could not score more goals than our swiss cheese goalie let in.

It was so wonderful the other night to watch one of the Buffalo enforcers engage in hand-to-hand combat with Emery. The Senators-Sabres game featured a huge brawl after some hard hits and a few cheap shots.

Matt Biron skated to center ice to fight with Emery, and they just danced around and pulled each others' jerseys. But a Mr. Peters from Sabres had a serious fight with Emery soon after, and I was so disappointed that he couldn't really land a good punch.

I was wrong and my fellow CasteFootballers were right: Emery is a consummate punk, a piece of dung. He wore a Pimp Suit to the next game, be-bopping along in front of cameras to gain photographs. He also has Mike Tyson and other criminals painted on his goalie mask. It's a pox on the NHL that a jackarse like Emery gets to play

The Fight

$10K fine to the Sabres coach for putting out his goon line against the Senators skill line. Watch Biron trip up Emery after he gets up. funny stuff.

LOL...Andrew Peters beat the holy crap out of Ray Emery. I guess Mr. Big Bad Black Goalie was no match for a bruiser like Peters. I don't even like the Sabres and I enjoyed this fight. I wonder why.

Ray Emery, who has started just two games in the last eight, vented some frustration with his lack of playing time today. As he was leaving the ice, Emery slammed his stick on the boards then swung his stick, taking out the water bottles on top of the boards. As he was leaving, he hurled his stick into the stands. Neither general manager Bryan Murray nor head coach John Paddock had any comment on the incident saying they didn't see it take place. Murray said he wanted to speak with Emery after practice but that the goalie had left before he had a chance to speak with him... Martin Gerber will get the start in goal tonight when they host the Islanders. For New York, Wade Dubielewicz will make just his third start of the season with Rick DiPietro out. The Islanders said Thursday that DiPietro is day-to-day with a knee sprain... Both the Senators and Islanders held optional skates today. - TSN

From Washingtonpost.com: "The Senators spent much of their postgame media session Friday denying that Ray Emery had become a distraction after the backup goaltender showed up late for practice and was sent home.

It was the latest drama involving Emery, and it came one day after he reportedly threw a stick and some water bottles out of frustration with his lack of playing time."
You guys were right -- Emery is self-destructing. Couldn't happen to a nicer guy!

I always said he was a backup goalie and now I think I was wrong as he may not even be that. It wasn't that long ago that fits like Emery has had were a sure fire way of getting booted off the team. His contract, and being something of a tradeable asset, may win him a soft landing

He will eventually self-destruct but the Toronto Star will go on state for the record that it was the fault of the league, the fans, the coaches and managers, his teamates, and the lack of afrocentricism in society.
