R.I.P. Ray Fosse

Ray Fosse passed away Wednesday at the age of 74 after a 16 year battle with cancer. He was a two- time All - Star catcher. He was known for one play, Pete Rose running over him in the All-Star game and messing up his shoulder and having a concussion. He played for 14 years.

I was looking at Fosse's career stats and it's clear he never fully recovered from the injuries caused by his collision with Rose. He was just 23 in 1970 when the famous play happened, and that year he hit .307 with 18 homers and 61 RBIs. He only played in 120 games so much of his power numbers were likely compiled before that year's All Star Game.

After '70 Fosse's numbers really dropped off and by '74 he was a part-time player. It's a shame for him it happened, but there was nothing dirty about what Rose did, it was a hard-charging play by a hard-nosed player, one that helped define "Charlie Hustle's" career.
