‘Butterbean' Taps to Pudzianowski Strikes at KSW 14

LODZ, Poland -- Five-time World's Strongest Man Mariusz Pudzianowski got back on the winning track, as he struck Eric "Butterbean"Â Esch into submission at KSW 14 "Judgment Day"Â on Saturday at the Atlas Arena.
The newer, slimmer Pudzianowski, who weighed in at 260 pounds, circled around the largely immobile American, stinging him with some his trademark low kicks before taking the fight to the ground with a single-leg takedown. Once horizontal, Butterbean was helpless and Pudzianowski swarmed him with punches from side control. Butterbean submitted to strikes at the 1:16 mark in round one.
During the post-fight interview, Pudzianowski claimed that his trainers have been working hard at molding him into a real fighter. During the run-up to the fight, the Pole showed some humility after his ill-fated encounter with former UFC heavyweight champion Tim Sylvia in May. A year ago he was boldly proclaiming a world championship was in his future; he has since become much more subdued.
"No one knows where my ceiling is,"Â Pudzianowski said.
Meanwhile, Jan Blachowicz stopped Bellator Fighting Championships veteran Daniel Tabera with punches from the mount 4:19 into the second round to win the KSW light heavyweight tournament.
At the outset, Blachowicz supporters started a loud "Real Fight of the Night"Â chant. Their idol did not dissapoint, though, by his own admission, the first round was nothing about which to write home. Blachowicz wanted to strike with the Spaniard but did not get his wish, as Tabera spent the first round clinching and attempting takedowns. However, he could not dent the Pole's defenses and, ultimately, got taken down himself.
In the second round, Tabera actually moved into top position on the ground, but Blachowicz quickly scrambled free. After the two fighters traded leglock attampts, the Pole ended up in full guard, passed to mounted and started raining punches, which led to the stoppage at the 4:19 mark.
Blachowicz theorized that he locked up during the first round and preferred to forget the opening five minutes. When asked about a possible move stateside, he expressed his hope that it would come "as fast as possible."Â
Finally, KSW middleweight champion Krzysztof Kulak calmly defeated Daniel Dowda by unanimous decision in a non-title bout.
Dowda, always the frontrunner, enjoyed a strong first round, as he attempted to tie down Kulak on the ground. However, he failed to get any substantive grappling offense going. Dowda faded by the end of the second round, and Kulak nearly submitted him with a triangle choke. The scores through two rounds warranted an overtime period, which turned one-sided in Kulak's favor.
