A leaner Pudzian subs "sumo" Esch...

‘Butterbean' Taps to Pudzianowski Strikes at KSW 14

Sunday, September 19, 2010
by Tomasz Marciniak (tidzej@mmarocks.pl)

LODZ, Poland -- Five-time World's Strongest Man Mariusz Pudzianowski got back on the winning track, as he struck Eric "Butterbean"Â￾ Esch into submission at KSW 14 "Judgment Day"Â￾ on Saturday at the Atlas Arena.

The newer, slimmer Pudzianowski, who weighed in at 260 pounds, circled around the largely immobile American, stinging him with some his trademark low kicks before taking the fight to the ground with a single-leg takedown. Once horizontal, Butterbean was helpless and Pudzianowski swarmed him with punches from side control. Butterbean submitted to strikes at the 1:16 mark in round one.

During the post-fight interview, Pudzianowski claimed that his trainers have been working hard at molding him into a real fighter. During the run-up to the fight, the Pole showed some humility after his ill-fated encounter with former UFC heavyweight champion Tim Sylvia in May. A year ago he was boldly proclaiming a world championship was in his future; he has since become much more subdued.

"No one knows where my ceiling is,"Â￾ Pudzianowski said.

Meanwhile, Jan Blachowicz stopped Bellator Fighting Championships veteran Daniel Tabera with punches from the mount 4:19 into the second round to win the KSW light heavyweight tournament.

At the outset, Blachowicz supporters started a loud "Real Fight of the Night"Â￾ chant. Their idol did not dissapoint, though, by his own admission, the first round was nothing about which to write home. Blachowicz wanted to strike with the Spaniard but did not get his wish, as Tabera spent the first round clinching and attempting takedowns. However, he could not dent the Pole's defenses and, ultimately, got taken down himself.

In the second round, Tabera actually moved into top position on the ground, but Blachowicz quickly scrambled free. After the two fighters traded leglock attampts, the Pole ended up in full guard, passed to mounted and started raining punches, which led to the stoppage at the 4:19 mark.

Blachowicz theorized that he locked up during the first round and preferred to forget the opening five minutes. When asked about a possible move stateside, he expressed his hope that it would come "as fast as possible."Â￾

Finally, KSW middleweight champion Krzysztof Kulak calmly defeated Daniel Dowda by unanimous decision in a non-title bout.

Dowda, always the frontrunner, enjoyed a strong first round, as he attempted to tie down Kulak on the ground. However, he failed to get any substantive grappling offense going. Dowda faded by the end of the second round, and Kulak nearly submitted him with a triangle choke. The scores through two rounds warranted an overtime period, which turned one-sided in Kulak's favor.

Other Bouts
Niko Puhakka def. Danny van Bergen -- Unanimous Decision
Maciej Gorski def. Michal Mankiewicz -- Unanimous Decision
Przemyslaw Saleta def. Marcin Najman -- Submission (Forearm Choke) 3:14 R1
Niko Puhakka def. Borys Mankowski -- Submission (Anaconda Choke) 3:59 R2
Danny van Bergen def. Artur Sowinski -- Unanimous Decision
Maciej Gorski def. Kazuki Tokudome -- KO (Punch) 3:24 R1
Michal Mankiewicz def. Paul Reed -- Unanimous Decision

Howard, we have a few fans of WSM Pudzian on CF, so we (also) keep an eye on his MMA "career" as well.

Of course it deserves a thread. He's the WSM and we should all be proud of that. Whether or not he becomes a good MMA fighter remains to be seen. We should still follow him.

For the love of Christ he fought Butterbean!!!!!!Lesnar who does not seem to be liked at CCaste Football was whoopin' world champs in his first few fights. And honestly Lesnar would toss Mariuz around like a ragdoll. WSM at th end of the day is not combat.Kind of fun to watch, but it is not combat.

Your point is? I could give a crap less if he fought the lady next door. I'd like to see him have a nice MMA career because it will make him way more money than WSM. Pudzianowski is stronger than Lesnar but obviously is new to the sport so doesn't have the fighting ability. What do you have against him anyway?

I have nothing against the guy personally, but his MMA career is a joke.He is doing it just for the money and fighting Butterbean proves it.Fight a real fighter.

Why does'nt Lesnar have his own post. The guy is incredible and a world champ. He could end up being better than Fedor.

He's just started MMA and he fought a real fighter in Tim Sylvia. It was a bad loss and he can't fight top fighters yet.

What's stopping you from starting a thread for Lesnar?

Howard, I pull for Lesnar in every fight (I was 50/50 on Carwin), and have constantly posted on the freakish athletic monster that is Brock Lesnar. I hope he (literally) smashes "Mud Pride" Velasquez' face through the mat.

However, I also pull (in WSM & MMA) for Pudzian. He's a world class athlete & a powerhouse of a man. Yes, Butterbean is (now) a joke, but as WA33 alluded to...Pudzian did fight (former UFC Champ) Sylvia. Of course (in MMA), Pudzian isn't in Lesnar's league, BUT we still like to keep an eye (& pull for) him.

Let's support ALL our White athletes!

Lesnar did so good in MMA rights off the bat because he's a world class wrestler and has freakish strength and athleticism for his size. If DP gets competent in wrestling, BJJ, dirty boxing and seriously improves his stamina he will be a successful MMA fighter. So far DP has shown the desire to improve so I think he's going to be a force in MMA in 2-3 years as he hones his skills.
