Justin Thomas won the final WGC event to be held at the fabled Firestone course in Akron yesterday, pulling away to an easy victory. It was his third win of the season, on top of five last year. He's up to 9 career wins already, meaning he now ranks 15th in Tour wins among active players at the very young age of 25! He's an amazing talent, right up there with Jordan Spieth. Justin defends his PGA title this week at Bellerive Golf Course outside St. Louis.

Much like Brooks Koepka, yet another tremendous young White talent who has emerged is Bryson DeChambeau. He's won two tournaments this year, is likely to be named an alternate to the U.S. Ryder Cup team, and currently leads the FedEx Cup standings as the Tour is now in the midst of the FedEx Cup playoffs (DeChambeau currently leads the Dell Technologies Championship, the second of the four consecutive playoff tournaments). Bryson is a 24 year old athletic, good looking kid from California who has a unique style and also a unique way of playing. He's highly intelligent. To give an idea of how he plays, out of laziness I'll quote Wikipedia:

"All of DeChambeau's irons and wedges[14] are cut to exactly the same length: 37.5 inches (0.953 m). Their lie and bounce angle are also the same; only the lofts are different. As well as the single length concept, his clubs are unusual for their extremely upright lie angle. [15] In addition, DeChambeau keeps the club on the same plane throughout his swing and does not turn his wrists during his swing.[16] In 2011, at the suggestion of his instructor Mike Schy, DeChambeau switched to JumboMax Grips, the largest grips commercially available. The larger grips allow DeChambeau to hold the grips in his palms and not his fingers."

Yet Bryson remains virtually unknown, as the media and DWFs have renewed their endless love affair with a 42 year old player who hasn't won a major in a decade. He still receives polite applause from galleries at best. He's got so much going for him that he'll probably be another of those White athletes who are widely despised when he does become well known. But he has lots of talent, which will soon propel Bryson DeChambeau to be one of the biggest stars on the PGA Tour.

Right Don. Yet another great talent on the tour! Was playing golf today myself and was able to watch DeChambeau in the clubhouse after finishing my round. I shot 85 BTW.
I've said in the past the only way we're going to stop hearing all the Tiger talk is for someone to come along and win as many or more Majors than Woods. However, it seems like that's going to be almost impossible with all the talent out there now. I thought maybe McIlroy, 4, then Spieth 3, Johnson, Koepka 3, Thomas. Now with DeChambeau on the scene, it looks as though the Majors will be split between all these talented players over the next several years. I believe Spieth still has a shot to win 10, but it's going to be very difficult.
It would have been interesting to have had all this talent around when Tiger was in his prime. I don't think he would have won 14 Majors.

The current talent reminds me of the Nicklaus years, Nicklaus, Watson, Palmer, Player, Ballesteros, Trevino, Miller, Floyd, etc.

I agree, but the talent now is so much deeper than before, much deeper than during the Nicklaus era and even Woods' era. As long as the top ten or fifteen stars win most of the majors I'll be happy. Woods was an outlier and I can't see anyone getting close to his 14 majors, but who knows what can happen. Rory McIlroy looked like a good choice a few years ago but he's now stymied. Same with Day and Spieth to a degree. All I know is that I enjoy the heck out of following golf these days, in spite of the regime's ever-lasting over the top gay love for Woods.

CS, congrats on the 85! I've only played twice this year so far but managed an 89 a few weeks back.

Tiger Woods is leading the Tour Championship, the final event of the four week Fed Ex Cup playoffs, always played at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta. The announcers and DWFs are of course giddy at the moment but there's still a round and a half to go. If Woods wins he could actually win the Fed Ex Cup if everything breaks right even though it would be his first win of the season and first in five years.

Justin Rose moved up to number one in the world rankings last week. He's the fourth Englishman and 22nd golfer overall to be ranked number one since the rankings started in 1986.

Running away with it now. Seems he wants it more than the others. We won't hear the end of this until next season now. If he beats Mickelson in that upcoming exhibition, even more hype.

Unbelievable that the likes of McIlroy, Johnson, Rose, Koepka, and even Speith who didn't even make the season ending tournament all have crumbled to Woods!
Very disappointing!!
If he wins a Major next year, he will be declared the GOAT without any debate even if he never catches Jack's 18!

It's poor timing for Woods to win. Golf is off the radar of most people with fall approaching and football under way, and this just seems like an average tournament win. I don't think this does much for Woods reputation. All kinds of guys win a tournament here and there.

The Fed Ex Cup playoffs are moving to August starting next year, which is a great move by the Tour as currently there's little interest in them even though they usually provide interesting scenarios and good theater. Competing against NFL preseason games instead of regular season games will give them a nice boost.

Starting next year also, the Players Championship moves back to March, then The Masters in April, the U.S. Open in June, the British Open in July, the PGA Championship in August, followed by the Fed Ex playoffs later in August, which will be shortened from four weeks to three. That gives golf a nice six month prime season that will keep interest high.

Next week is the Ryder Cup, which takes place in France. The U.S. team is coming off the great win two years ago but hasn't won in Europe since 1993, an unbelievably long drought as the Euros have reversed America's long-time dominance in the event. Should be can't miss drama for golf fans.

The U.S. is on the verge of losing the Ryder Cup to Europe. They're hanging on by a thread right now but it will take close to a miracle to retain the Cup with just a handful of singles matches left to finish.

Tiger Woods just lost his singles match to Jon Rahm. Despite the rabidly Tigercentric media coverage of the event, their boy went 0-4, with his all-time Ryder Cup record now a terrible 13-21-3. If the American team once again loses on foreign soil, and they haven't won the Cup in Europe since 1993, Woods' flop will be a big reason.

The final score was 10.5 to 17.5, one of the most one sided Ryder Cup routs ever. If Woods had gone 4-0 instead of 0-4 the U.S. would have retained the Cup. Mickelson, Bubba and other Americans also stunk but they sat out the majority of matches whereas a goodly portion of U.S. hopes was placed on Woods, who looked lethargic and dour during the event. But the Tiger loving media was full of excuses, Phil getting lots of blame even though he only played twice.

Key factors -- it was played in France on a course the Americans were unfamiliar with because while the Euros play a lot in the U.S. and know all the best American courses, Americans rarely cross the pond to play. Also, the course had tight fairways and brutal rough, much like a U.S. Open course, and the Europeans were on average considerably straighter drivers of the ball.

If Americans want to ever win on European soil, they need to do the right thing and play on the European Tour much more than they do now. It's time to face reality. Downgrading the PGA Championship from a major to a near major on par with the Players championship and having the fourth major take place in Europe would be a good start.
