The Amazin’ first baseman launched his 27th home run of the season to center field in the fourth inning of Sunday’s game against the Chicago Cubs. The 454 ft. solo shot, of off Cole Hamels, broke the team’s rookie home run record held by Darryl Strawberry since 1983.

It took just 77 games for Alonso to etch himself in Mets’ lore.

the 24-year-old on Saturday also broke Cody Bellinger’s NL rookie record (2017) for dingers before the All-Star break; the MLB record belongs to Mark McGwire, who crushed 33 home runs in 1987. The Mets have 12 games left before the break.

Then there is Aaron Judge’s 52 home runs during his 2017 rookie season, which stands as another mark within Alonso’s reach. Alonso is on pace for 56 home runs — which would also surpass the Mets’ single-season record of 41, held by Todd Hundley (1996) and Carlos Beltran (2006).

Nice to see NY Met Pete Alonso $54 Million out shining the OVERPAID Juan Soto! $765 Million! I know it's early, but Alonso is destroying teammate Soto in almost every category!

Soto Stats: WAR: 0.7, R-14, H-15, RBI-7, HR-3, BA-.231. OPS-.798
Although Alonso's career stats aren't quite where Soto's are, Alonso deserves a better contract, and Soto should be paid a great deal less. Baseball players as well as NBA players are way overpaid. IMO.

Fully agreed! Soto’s contract might go down as the most ludicrous of all time. How can anyone live up to that?!

A bit of Hollywood drama played out in Queens, NY last night. Former Met Pete Alonso made his emotional return after being discarded in the offseason by the kosher duo of owner Steve Cohen and GM David Stearns. The Mets season has been an utter disaster, being referred to locally as the “worst team money could buy”. So it was fitting that the finest moment for Mets fans would come with the beloved slugger returning and hitting his 300th career homer in a visiting uniform. The fans cheered him and even gave a rare curtain call for the opponent.



I happy for Pete that he got his revenge against ownership and Mets fans got to see a moment that should have been “theirs” with Alonso resigning as a homegrown legacy player.

PS - Alonso started tonight’s game with homerun #301. Another absolute bomb.

Give mad props to Keith Hernandez, who praised Mets fans for last night's curtain call. Keith was one of the few sane voices in the N.Y. and national media who continually pleaded with the Mutts front office to resign Pete, saying 35 (plus) HR, 100 (plus) RBI hitters that play all 162 games a year, "don't grow on trees". Seemed like 99% of Mets fans were with Keith, urging Cohen to resign him at every promotional stop he made.

Mets GM, Stearns, was sold to fans as a modern day, baseball wunderkind who would turn the Mets around right away. The media was right, he did turn the Mets around -- turned them into a laughing stock.

Here's something I find very troubling, regarding Stearns: The highest level he reached as a baseball player was Little League!

How in the world can you hand over the control of a $3.55 billion MLB franchise to someone like that? Does he have any idea what MLB talent looks like or understand club house dynamics, if never played beyond Little League?

Freethinker, I loved every bit of what happened last night. Mets fans stood with their White superstar, who never wanted leave.

Fact is, the odious Stearns never even made Pete a contract offer. Idea was to replace Pete with Jorge Polanco and Mark Vientos -- Polanco, a veteran Dominican, has turned into a total free agent bust. Vientos, who appears to be a fairly inarticulate Dominican, Coney-Barrett anchor baby, has proven to be nothing special, at the age of 27. White, Canadian Jared Young, once considered a 4A player, has seized the first base job and done real well...but he's not Pete Alonso.
