Promoter Bob Arum has confirmed that undisputed world middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik will defend his titles against Welsh puncher Gary Lockett in Atlantic City on June 7.

According to Bostonherald.com the HBO televised card is expected to feature Daniel Ponce de Leon defending his WBO junior featherweight title against Juan Manuel Lopez and Ireland's undefeated Andy Lee possibly against Marco Antonio Rubio.

On paper Pavlik starts a strong favourite against Lockett and rightly so but the Welshman is a known puncher, albeit at the lower level.

HBO will have 3 exciting fights in one night. HBO could be setting up a Pavlik - Lee contest in the future. They usually have that set up if they intend for them to meet in the near future. AC is a bit too far for me but this would be the perfect chance for Casters to see some good fights for a decent price. Trust me it sure beats watching it on TV

I don't think I've seen seen Lockett fight before, but it's not hard to work out that Pavlik should win this by a KO before at least round 6. It's a shame for Lockett but he'll have a nice pay day to reward his efforts over the last few years. He's a tough one apparently so he won't give up easily that's for sure and could possibly roughen up Pavlik a little bit because Pavliks defensive skills aint that great.

Welsh fighters are always tough. I remember Colin Jones, a rugged, hard hitting welterweight back in the eighties. Very heavy hands, and you could see it when the punches landed. Never seen Lockett, but I imagine he's in the same mold.

Kelly better be ready to go some rounds.

With Lockett, it is just a question of how badly he will lose -not whether he will win. Pavlik will have plenty of motivation to look good with Joe Calzaghe watching him.

Its amazing the amount of respect both fighters have for each other. Pavlik stated Lockett is a dangerous fighter and he will not take him lightly. No black trash talk here.

I've only seen one fight of Lockett. That was his First round KO of Gilbert Eastman,he has legitimate power. Basically from what I've heard about his other fights is that he's a poor man's Pavlik.

I was more impressed by Tsarenko than Lockett in that fight, he clearly won (should have been a UD not SD). But it may have been Lockett's worst performance.

The fight is only a week away now. It will be good to see Kelly Pavlik in action again...

Does anyone think there's any chance of an upset here?

What will be interesting about this fight is how Kelly destroys Lockett. I want to see him as a chain saw cutting through Lockett like a watermelon. Maybe harsh but I want to see Kelly utterly destroy this "never will be" and move on to King Auther in the fall.

I really can not wait for any of Kelly's fights. I wish he could crush a another black fighter, but there are none worth fighting right now in the middleweight division. Hopefully another one will emerge and define Kelly's greatness.

Lockett is nothing special.

He was a highly protected Frank Warren fighter who scored a few visually impressive knockouts over assorted scrubs before getting a terrible beating from an unknown Eastern European called Yuri Tsarenko.

Although hyped as a big puncher, Lockett has never KOed anything close to a resembling a quality opponent. Nevermind a top level fighter like Pavlik.

Kelly will end this fight anytime he wants.

Great person, special fighter and soon to be a major American Superstar! Kelly gets KO in the third. I hope King Aurther beats Miranda and then bring him on.

I can't see Kelly losing for the next 5 years. The Pavlik vs Abraham fight will be huge in the fall. But maybe Joe C. Wales has something to say about that?

I might take a lot heat for this but here it goes I don't see Kelly getting beat by Joe but maybe I'm being a biased American

Joe's left hand in his last couple of fights looks shot/fried. Pavlik against a younger Joe it'd be a different story. Joe seems to have had too many hand injuries. The Joe that fought Eubank and Mitchell would of had Manfredo jr out on his back instead of overwhelming Peter with those pitty pat punches. And what punch did he hurt Kessler with? Not his power hand(left) but a right hook to the body. So I kinda laugh when people say Joe would KO Kelly in 3. Joe to outpoint Kelly is a very realistic</font> outcome but would be close not to mention entertaining with the participants high punch output.
I'd much rather see Calzaghe-vs-Jones than have two of our best go at it.Edited by: shawn1262231

I hope Pavlik vs. Calazghe never happens, and they both retire undefeated.

These fights I want to see:

Pavlik vs. Wright, Pavlik vs. Jones, Pavlik vs. Trinidad, Calzaghe vs. Dawson, Calzaghe vs. Tarver, and most of all Calzaghe vs. Jones.

I agree JD1986 with wanting to see Calzaghe-vs-Jones. Jones seemed to be the caste clowns "Superman" in the 90s up to today. Calzaghe vs Tarver or Jones would be more to my liking than him against the younger guys like Dawson or Pavlik.

Pavlik and Calzaghe are both great fighters. I have always cheered on Joe as well as Pavlik. If I had to choose a personal favorite I would go with Pavlik.
However, I think the best case scenario for white fighters in general is this:
Calzaghe defeats Kelly Pavlik by Unanimous decision with neither fighter being hurt or injured. Calzaghe retires. Pavlik goes wild and continues to destroy fighters like he did before his decision loss to Calzaghe and unifies the Super middleweight division. Kessler moves up to light heavyweight where he unifies all the belts. Pavlik moves up to unify all the Super middleweight belts. Now, 10 years from now if the aforementioned scenario played out, Calzaghe would be the great one who beat a)the guy who would go on to dominate the light heavyweight division (Kessler), and b) The guy who would move on to dominate the Super middleweight division (Pavlik). I guess what I am saying is that a loss to Pavlik would taint Calzaghes legacy more than if the reverse happened in the eyes of most main stream boxing figures.

I thought Calzaghe was supposed to fight Jones this fall. The fact is though that Pavlik is better than Wright, Dawson, or Jones. So this fight would probably make more sense.

whats interesting about Pavlik, something the comentators on Setanta picked up on is how beloved Pavlik is amonst the fans.he had something like 7000 fans drive thousands of miles from Akron and other areas to suport him.Thats unheard of for an American fighter and the only other American fighter that commands that level of fanfare is De la Hoya and Hatton and Cal internationally.they joked that Mayweather dos'nt even get 7 fans drive from Mighigan.the fight had a carnival atmosphere, like Manchester and Cardiff, something else you rarely see in American arenas.Pavliks become the American Hatton and proves that white athletes in induvidual sports without the support of historical team franchises and clever Caste esque marketing like Woods achieve a leval of adulation thats rare for Black athletes.

Pavlik has frightening power. None of those shots looked like they had more than 3/4 power on them. His power looks like a middleweight version George Foreman....
