It looks like Rodriguez is rounding into form at the right time. He could be a dark horse for the Olympic finals. I would rate Rodriguez, Unger and a healthy Pickering as the best chances for a white sprinter making the 100 final in the Olympics.Edited by: white is right

Paul Hession ran a 20.26 today in Greece for 3rd place. I think he is racing a little too much. He needs to give his body some more time to recover. I'm also worried about him peaking too soon. Craig Pickering had the same problem last year before the world champs.

I cant beleive you have never mentioned Charis Papadias or Angelos Pavlakakis. These 2 Greek sprinters won the 60 meter world indoor championchips in 1997 and Pavlakakis has the Greek 100 meter record in 10.11. They both vanished soon after 1997.

I'm not an expert on sprinting, so I have a question:

How come white guys (and sprinters in general) have a 200 meter time -- if you halve it -- translates to a very impressive 100 meter time, but they don't usually run that fast if they just do the 100?

To reference Paul Hession's 20.26 as noted above -- if you cut it in half, that means an average of 10.13 for a 100 meter race.

Is this because they build up more speed and momentum during the second half of the race?

First off, Paul Hession has a p.b. of 10.18 so that makes sense if you look at his 200 meter p.b. What you are forgetting however is that the 200 will always be alot quicker time for the second half of the race because you are already moving. In the 100 you start from a stand still. Hopefully that helps you understand a little better.

As for Papadias & Pavlakakis, they were very good sprinters. If we were talking about guys from around a decade ago, they would be mentioned more. I think alot of the Greek Sprinters get looked down on with the drug rumors. I think that is very unfair. I will admit that Kenteris & Thannou looked suspicious, but they never tested postive over their whole careers. They will still punished from living their life long dreams of running in the olympics in front of their home country.
I belive there is a race indoors with Papadias on youtube. He had a start almost as good as Morne Nagel. For anyone intersted, Nagel blew out his achilles tendon earlier this year. He will still run next year but he is switching to the 400 meters.

200 meter sprinters already have a running start on that last 100. If they maintain that speed coming off the curve, that second 100 will clock in at the low 9 second range. Once that's added to the 11 second first 100, you get the 20+ second time.

You really can't cut it in half, because you'll never run the curve from a complete stop in the blocks as fast as you'd run the 2nd 100 while already in full stride at near top speed.

Good analysis American X. Welcome aboard. That is why 3 white sprinters have sub 20 but not one has gone sub 10 yet. I emphasis yet because I believe that Pickering is about to finally smash through that barrier.

Thanks for the replies; who were the three whites who clocked sub 20?

I know Pietro Mannea (sp?) was one, but our good friend Jon "I hat Myself" Entine says that Mannea has "black blood" in his veins.

You would think that whites would struggle to compete with blacks more in the 200 than in the 100 meter because you would think that the closing speed would be more of a factor.

But maybe just a tad of stamina problems kick in that hampers the black 100 meter sprinter who also runs the deuce more than the white sprinter over 200 meters. Or maybe whites run the curve better?

However, in reality whites have just as good "if not a better start" out of the blocks which is why we are very competitive over 60 meters. Over 100 meters the blacks have slightly more closing speed. Over 200 meters maybe the white sprinter relaxes a little bit and can coast the last 100 meters in the mid 9 range. Does anyone have any theories as to why whites are more competitive over 200 than 100 meters with blacks?

Michael Johnson, who has the 200 meter record, has a personal best of only 10.09 over 100 meters. So if Michael Johnson coasted to, lets say, a 10.10 over the first 100 meters starting from the track curve on his record run; then he would have ran the last 100 in 9.22 which is insanely fast!

I am shocked that a guy who couldn't go faster than 10.09 over 100 meters ever, was able to run a 19.32 200 meter. You wouldn't think he would have enough closing kick. Although I may say that he trained specifically for 200 and 400 meters. So maybe he wasn't a fast starter or never ran the 100 enough?

I remember the race where Michael Johnson raced Donovan Bailey over 150 meters and Johnson was getting beat pretty bad and then pulled up with a quad injury. I wonder if Johnson juiced himself to the gills with undetectable steroids to run that ridiculous 19.32.

That is a full 0.3 seconds faster than the 2nd fastest time by Tyson Gay last year. You wouldn't think it is humanly possible to have the 200 meter record by that much. I have much more faith that Johnson was clean when he ran his 400 meter record at the world championships in Spain just after his 31st birthday. I don't know if Johnson would have been on something that late in his career. Although maybe he tried EPO, Growth Harmone or Hemoglobin enhancers with the goal of getting the 400 meter world record before retirement.

Certainly if Johnson could be a cheater, Wariner could also be one to. But Clyde Hart was adamantly against PEDS. So if these two use/ used; they would have had to have done it on their own!

Mannea, Kederis & Urban all ran under 20 sec in the 200m. also Kevin Little of the US broke 20 sec, though it was wind aided. I truly believe Michael Johnson was juiced to the gills, and I don't think Hart knew about it. he ran those amazing time in the mid to late 90's when HGH and a few other PEDs were undetectable. with the way 9.7 are being dropped these days, I would have to say there is a new undetectable PED on the market. I would say the new PED side affect might be cramping muscles. seemed to be allot of leg cramps at the trials this year. also allot of runners pulling out of there races.

Hession 3rd in London today in 20.37.
The good news is that he finished just behind Wallace Spearmon, and beat a lot of top sprinters.
Could be a finalist in Beijing.

Hession just ran his third race in that range. He has a irish national record of 20.30, 20.32 and now today a 20.37! I would love to see him break through into the 20.20 or faster range as that might be necessary to make the finals with so many of the elite 200 guys being on p.e.d.s. Paul Hession and David Gillick are the pride of Ireland. On a side note, M.Rooney and D.Gillick train together.

Here is a great article/interview with the Irish Speedster Paul Hession. He says that he belives he can go sub 20 in the the next few years. I really enjoyed it and you guys will as well. The only disagreement I have is that Bolt is clean. Hession also thought that Marion Jones was clean and as we all know, she was juicing as well. Regardless, you guys will enjoy this article. Good luck to Paul in making the finals of the 200 meters in the olympics.

Paul Hession finished 2nd today in the 200 meters at the World Athletics Final. He took home a nice $20,000 dollars for his work. He lost by 1/100th of a second. This should give him alot of confidence going into next season. The race was slow in bad conditions but he was outstanding. The pride of Ireland.

The times were very slow due to the weather. The race is posted on youtube. He ran down the whole field. He was in last place coming off the curve and he just put the hammer down. He seems to come from behind alot. If he can get his starts better in the deuce, he will approach teh 20 second area. He has run in the 20.30 range several times. Paul just needs to start better and also especially learn to run the curve more efficiently. The same problem W.Spearmon has. Hession still should be proud. He lost by 1/100th of a second. If the race was 1 meter longer, he wins. Congrats to the Irish Speedster.

Paul Hession has been only average so far in 2009. I'm anxious to see him resume his form of the last couple of years. He is probably more of a 200 meter guy like Tobias Unger but he can still run in the short sprint. Hopefully he will return to form this summer. Good luck to the Irish Speedster!

Very steady improvement and iss probably being very smart about peaking in Berlin. He just ran a 10.34 and a 20.44. I think he should stick with the 200 meter in Berlin. I'd love to see him make the finals and finally break 20.30.

I think your right StarWars. Paul is a very smart man. He was going to college to become a Doctor and just fell in love with Athletics. Paul will become Dr.Hession in the future but that will have to wait until after 2012. This guy is intelligent on and off the track. He never seems to be running that fast. He runs so straight up almost like M.Johnson did. You would think he has a back brace on but if it ain't broke, don't fix it! The guy can really turn his legs over. Tall, lanky and very fast.

He has a game plan and that is to take it very slowly. I see him breaking 20.30 in a highly contested race with good conditions. I would really love to see him hit the 20.20's range! That would be cool. Anyways, congrats on a nice performance. It couldn't happen to a nicer guy. As humble as they come. Good luck Paul.
