I watched the whole program today, and discovered I missed a few things. First, Wayne Embrey is actually black. I should have known that, but his career seemed so nondescript to me that I barely remembered him. Imagine my astonishment, then, to hear him described today as a Hall of Famer! Wow- just wow. Second, Jon Barry is a complete idiot. So is Mark Price.
When asked about the lack of white American players in the NBA, Price giggled like a schoolgirl and said, "I guess they're not good enough." Yeah, Mark, I'm sure your little ass would be given a chance to play today. You'd be just like Gerry McNamara, McAlarney and so many others. Barry rambled on incoherently about how whites have too much money so their kids skate board and play X-Box, instead of being on the court all day like the black youngsters. Huh? All white kids come from wealthy families? All black kids play basketball all day? Quick question- since no blacks apparently play video games, why is every player on the cover of Madden black? Who are they marketing to?
After actually watching this program, it's hard not to totally despise Jerry West, Mike Dunleavy, Mark Price and Jon Barry. Each of them was permitted to play in the NBA, and Dunleavy's son is now playing. No one in their families has been frozen out, like so many other white players have. They obviously subscribe to the arrogant notion that they are so "special," and can therefore safely dismiss all other white players in order to ensure the gratitude of their black peers. It also allows them to make huge salaries after their playing careers are over. On the other hand, I have more respect than ever for Kyle McAlarney. We need a lot more like him.
