Has anybody taken a good look at this Florida Gator - NICK CALATHES?

The guy is awesome, the best white player at his height and position (6'6 and Point guard) I have seen in the last 20 years or so. I figure he can grow to about 6'7 or 6'8 by the time the NBA comes calling for him.

Any way, he is a sophomore having taken the leadership role for the Gators. It's obvious Florida will not go back to their back-to-back championship days, but that will not stop this guy from displaying awesome numbers, while away from the national spotlight.

The best white 6'6 player in the NBA right now is the Great MANU GINOBILI, and there aren't many good white guys around the 6'6-6'9 height range these days. So I figure NICK CALATHES could be next big thing for white players around that height range.

He is a DO EVERYTHING player: Shoots (3pt range), rebounds (4-6 rpg), passes (he's a point guard), and steals (he plays really good defense). He was born in 1989, so I suspect he might jump to the NBA after either after his junior or senior year.

Any way BEST of LUCK to that DUDE.

Yes Calathes is the real deal and a serious NBA prospect. I just hope they let him play point when he comes out. Nick needs to shine in the tournamant to become more prominent in the mind of the public and force scouts to pay more attention to him. Florida is worth watching because of Calathes and two other white guys getting loads of playing time, Dan Werner and Chandler Parsons.

A Brent Barry career would be nice but I am hoping and expecting better from Calathes.
 
Barry might be slightly more athletic (or at least was when he was younger) but Calathes is a far superior passer and could play the point.

I agree that Barry is more athletic but as you(ptguard2) and I know, that is not a slight on Calathes. Brent Barry in his prime was one of the finest athletes in the NBA. The evidence being him winning the NBA slam dunk competition with a DR. J dunk leaping from the free throw line. Brent also played three positions in his career, point guard, shooting guard and small forward at times. If Brent were black he would have been more than a role player throughout his career and gotten much more respect.Edited by: guest301
 
Brent Barry was also a hell of a passer, and as guest301 said he could play the point. he was very much a point forward, in the mold of Grant Hill though without his acclaim.

excellent points, whiteathlete33.Barry, like Calathes,was an excellent shooter and passer, but he didn't have Calathes' handle. however, Barry played way above the rim.


i think another difference is that Calathes is a better defender. Barry made his living knocking down 3's, and was never known as anything more than an adequate defensive player. Calathes, however, is a superb defender, at least at the college level.

i don't place any faith whatsoever in the pre-draft rankings or mock drafts. the caste propaganda is already beginning with regards to Calathes, though. in my local paper this morning, they were talking about his "woeful" lack of athleticism and his "jump shot"...

to my knowledge, he's the ONLY player in the nation to average better than 15 points, 5 rebounds, and 5 assists. Calathes averaged a team-leading 17.2 points, 5.3 rebounds (second on the team), and a team-leading 6.4 assists per game as a sophomore this year. furthermore, the 6-6 point guard led the Gators in steals with nearly 2 per game. he also shot close to 40% from behind the 3-point line.


so it begs the question, what exactly is his biggest problem? i think the answer is only skin deep.

if you want to see how ridiculous the Caste System is in basketball, just take a look at the following comparison.


Player A: is a 6-6 point guard who averages 17.1 points per game, 5.4 rebounds, 3.9 assists, 3.6 turnovers, 2.1 steals, shoots 46% from the floor and 27% from 3-point range while playing in Conference USA.


Player B: is a 6-6 point guard who averages 17.2 points per game, 5.3 rebounds, 6.4 assists, 3.3 turnovers, 1.9 steals, shoots 48% from the floor and 39% from 3-point range while playing in the South Eastern Conference.


judging on those numbers can you tell me A) which playeris considered a lock to be a lottery pick? and B) which player has question marks regarding his playmaking ability and jump shot?


it might help to know which one is black and which is white to make your answer, because the numbers, apparently, mean absolutely nothing to the NBA scouts who are after the so-called "best players."


you see, despite being a piss poor shooter from the perimeter and having as many turnovers as assists in a pathetically weak basketball conference, Player A (also known as Tyreke Evans from Memphis) is considered a LOCK to be picked in the top 10 of the upcoming NBA Draft. meanwhile, player B (also known as Nick Calathes from Florida), despite being a vastly superior perimeter shooter AND passer and putting up similar or superior numbers in a MUCH better conference, is regarded as having "serious" questions about his playmaking abilty and jump shot.

Excellent points, JC, as always. Calathes plays much better than most players at his height and position right now. The only difference from him and the others is only skin deep. I think Calathes is a remarkable find, there has not been a white point guard this tall (6'6) yet. Brent Barry played point guard and manage to make 10-14 points, 5 rebounds, and 5 assists for a few years.

But Calathes is the real deal, his emergence might start a new trend in basketball for whites. Just as Dirk and Nash have managed to do so. I'm really excited for this dude, for unlike Ben Woodside, his NBA chances are clearly better. Because the NBA is very bias towards short whites, many times more than to short blacks (just look at Robinson and Paul). So despite the bias against Calathes right now, it will not prevent him from becoming a solid point guard in the NBA. It now depends on what team will draft him. So good luck to him. Considering that he's only 20 years old his "woeful" lack of athleticism will probably change a bit in the next couple of years. People forget that white players tend to mature a bit later than blacks. He's probably not even close to reaching his full potential as an athlete.
 
Calathes in my opinion is the best basketball player in the SEC, a conference that is totally dominated by black athletes. How "woeful" can his athleticism be?
