Speaking of last night's game, who could have possibly thought that the Texans could fall so far since last year? It's hard to believe that it's still mostly the same team.
Part of the reason is because Matt Schaub has always had an average skillset, maybe above average at one point. He isnt very mobile (although his mobility was better in the past) and isn't good at going through his progressions. He often forces too much to Andre Johnson, which has led to more picks this year. Also the running game has fallen off with Arian Foster falling off. He had great vision to find the cutback lane which is what the zbs requires in a back. Ben Tate is good but not best suited for a zbs, his vision is average and doesn't take full advantage of the nice cutback lanes, not to mention the blocking isn't as good since they went mostly sumo.
Schaub did well with a good running game on roll outs where teams bit on the run which also cut the field in half requiring less reads, often forcing it to Andre Johnson, who while still good, isn't as great as he once was. This was always apparent when Kevin Walter was there, who could have eclipsed 1k multiple times, Schaub just never targeted him enough.
Keenum should still be playing, he is young and will make mistakes, but has the athleticism and talent level to make all of the throws and the mobility to roll out, and faster at going through his progressions.
What Schaub had in the past is similar to what Russel Wilson has now, a great running game and lots of roll outs, and Seattle's defense is doing great right now. If the running game falls off expect Wilson to struggle much more. Except for many years the Texans didn't have a good defense, before Cushing, Watt, Reed etc. Unlike Seattle, the dbs still can't cover.
Schaub was good and serviceable but his talent has dropped off. If things had lined up earlier with how Schaub played on offense a few years back and how the defense is now they would have been contenders for a while. Let Keenum develop and hopefully at least get a White safety, and try to upgrade the dbs with whatever talent is out there at the college level (still not much) and they can be contenders again. Also getting a White receiver would help and utilizing White tight ends more. They had some good ones that were developing they let get away like James Casey, now the Eagles are stacked at tight end.
