Gregg Williams talked about specifics before the 49er's game. Someone was doing a documentary on Steve Gleason and his fight against ALS and recorded it. He specified that the players go after Michael Crabtree's hurt knee. I think a sprained acl. Something about smashing Frank Gore's head but also Alex Smith "We hit (expletive) (Alex) Smith right there. Remember me, I've got the first one, I've got the first one. Go lay that (expletive) out."

However, having been in lockerooms some of that stuff can be taken out of context. Some coaches can ramble on, maybe its to inspire the black kids I dont know. Ive heard stuff like "imagine them being a rival tribe down the hill there and we gotta launch ourself full force and smash their heads in". You don't want to take out someones knees but I have seen plenty of black players try and do it when they see a guy with a knee brace or something on, anything that indicates a player is hurting somewhere, they will target it. When I played I just focused on getting a person down whatever way I could, regardless of color, yes I hit as hard as I could but never launched myself, you have to play right otherwise you have a higher chance of whiffing on a tackle, might be the reason the Saints missed so many tackles, the Marshawn Lynch touchdown comes to mind, nobody seemed to try and tackle him, just trying to strip the ball and put a big hit on him.
The only person that I saw get hit hard was Alex Smith. The only cart off was Pierre Thomas, but looked accidental and the hit was by a black player.
Rex Ryan has come under scrutiny for talking about targeting players in his book. Here it is
From pages 16-17 of the chapter called Blunt-Force Trauma: “Each game we might also designate an opposing player with a dot. Players don’t want to be dotted by the New York Jets, because that means we want that dude knocked out of the game. Of course, it has to be legal and by the book. We don’t play dirty, and no way will we intentionally hurt a player with an illegal, cheap shot. We dot players fair and square. Everything we do is aggressive and, hey, we may make a mistake, but we will go one hundred miles per hour and we will knock the hell out of you. Big hits create turnovers. "players who think they are badasses", Ive seen the Jets play and Welker must have a big dot every single time, and I don't think he thinks "hes a badass", very humble guy imo. So yeah, I think most defensive coaches talk about hitting everyone the same (probably more talks about targetting White players at higher levels), but blacks choose to go after Whites more frequently either way. I do know that many blacks hate when they see a White playing a skill position, and they can't stop him to save their life. When I was in high school playing I heard it put like this "its like a black rapper getting dissed by Vanilla Ice" (I think he stole that from 8 mile but the concept is still the same). Gerhart had a ton of guys go after his knees his senior year. Tons of instances of Whites being targeted but largely ignored. I am sure coaches at the NFL level encourage their players to go after White players more often as well.
