Speaking of movies.....

I guess I have to be the site movie reviewer since I know all the rest of you are holed up in cabins in the woods waiting for the apocalypse and planning life in Whitopia.

Was there mention of this movie on the site? My All American? I saw a trailer for it a few weeks ago, and never heard anything else. I guess it bombed at the box office and was pulled. The trailer intrigued me because it was about college football in some past era, I knew it was a past era because there wasn't a black person to be seen. The trailer didn't even have the standard white guilt apology about the oppressive racism of the time that unfairly wouldn't allow low IQ blacks into universities merely to play football.

Thus it was all white guys. the movie takes place at Texas and from what I could see was a very positive look at a time in history that only gets negative attention nowadays. Here's the synopsis:

What Freddie Steinmark (Finn Wittrock) wants most in the world is to play football. Although he is deemed too small by the usual athletic standards, his father trains him hard. Freddie brings a fight to the game that ultimately gets him noticed--by none other than legendary University of Texas coach Darrell Royal (Aaron Eckhart). Awarded a scholarship and a chance to play for the Longhorns, Freddie sets off to Austin with his loving high school sweetheart, Linda (Sarah Bolger), determined to make the team. Alongside his old teammate Bobby Mitchell (Rett Terrell) and new pal James Street (Juston Street), Freddie is put through the paces of a grueling practice schedule. The boys' camaraderie off the field translates into solid playing on it, and they rise up the depth charts, giving the Longhorns a real chance to improve upon their mediocre record. But just when they're reveling in the success of the season, Freddie suffers an injury that leads to a shocking diagnosis and the biggest challenge he will ever face. From the writer of Hoosiers (1986) and Rudy (1993), MY ALL AMERICAN tells the true story of a boy who became a hero and what it truly means to have the heart of a champion.

I can see why it bombed, no magical negroes, no gay characters, no gratuitous sex or violence. Why leave the cabin for that?

Freddie Steinmark was a DB on the 1969 Texas National Championship team. This team has a kind of infamy as the last all-white consensus Number One team.

Steinmark played the big game with Arkansas with a cancerous tumor in his leg, which had to be amputated a few days after the game. He died of cancer in 1971.

Freddie Steinmark received a lot of publicity during this period. He was widely mourned.
