Yes I missed the IBF welterweight title bout from what I read off of the fight reports Paro built a decent lead in the bout and held off a late rush of the Irish champion.

Crocker was always going to be a vulnerable champion judging off his two controversial fights with fellow ethnic Irish fighter Paddy Donovan. I hope he was compensated well for this bout as he had more lucrative bouts against Benn, Haney and Garcia available if he won this mandatory bout.

The Zayas vs Ennis fight is the crown jewel fight of the weekend but there a few intriguing prospect bouts involving potential stars like Bryce Mills and Lee.

Mills needs to win this tough bout against Vargas who is the best of the Vargas sons. Vargas looked like a machine until his last bout where he stepped up a level and suddenly looked beatable as he was touched up with some power shots and hit repeatedly with a jab. Mills is fresher than Vargas' last opponent and now has a blue print to a possible victory, he will need to box Vargas' ears off to get a decision as he is the A side off of the Vargas name.

Jakhongir Zokirov is a former world silver medalist who is 6'7" and is Uzbekistani. I don't know if he is as talented as Jalolov but if he can fight to his dimensions and smother shorter boxers he has a chance to go far in the division.

PS there is unsubstantiated rumor that Usyk is close to announcing his retirement from boxing. If Usyk is honest with himself off his last fight it has to be consideration considering his age and the fact that heavyweight bouts are taking more out his body than cruiserweight bouts did(which is logical).

Normally I wouldn't take a typical commentator too seriously but this guy is a dialed insider and not a blogger type as he hosts most DAZN boxing events.'

As I speculated yesterday Usyk has freed up all of the organizational championships and will only be the Ring/lineal champion and it looks like he will have one last round up fight and he will ride off into the sunset.

I expect Kabayel to be upgraded to a full champion and Fury vs Joshua could be for a vacant title and even Itauma vs Hrgovic for another vacant title.

https://www.ringmagazine.com/news/o...tles-but-isnt-retiring-20e4YDDpJkydbG2AGruyREIf Saudi money wasn't backing these fights we could have the chaos that ensued when champions were stripped of undisputed titles in the past with 4 champions doing their own thing but the incentive to unify the title will be there with the inflated Saudi backed purses.

On Saturday night, in a grueling 10 round fight, Jean Pascal lost a UD to Francis Lafreniere.

Both fighters are close to age 40. Lafreniere has fought most of his career (up until his past 2 fights) at middleweight. He knocked Pascal down once and won by a score of 96-93 on all three cards.

In Usyk's last fight against Rico he didn't move like he used to. Without those matador side and angle steps Usyk is just not the man he used to be. If he has to stand, block, and swing against these big heavyweight trucks he's just one of them but a smaller model.

This is the only fight card I could find for the 4th of July weekend. If anyone knows of another one, please post it.

July 4: Cleveland, Ohio (DAZN and TNT)

  • Title fight: Abdullah Mason vs. Albert Bell, 12 rounds, for Mason's WBO lightweight title
  • Title fight: Bruce Carrington vs. Rene Palacios, 12 rounds, for Carrington's WBC featherweight title
  • Delante Johnson vs. Christopher Guerrero, 10 rounds, welterweights
  • Deric Davis vs. Carlos Ramos, 8 rounds, lightweights
  • Ibrahim Mason vs. Erik Hanley, 4 rounds, junior lightweights
  • Abdurrahman Mason vs. Alvaro Huizar Cabral, 4 rounds, lightweights

Yes without his legs he is reduced to Holyfield around the time he had his unification battles with Lewis.

I don't think there is much boxing during the World Cup so this card is it as far as televised bouts on North American television.

https://www.boxingscene.com/article...-yoka-withdrawal-from-murat-gassiev-challengeAs Charles Martel stated Gassiev was upgraded to a full world champion so he is now the 4th cruiserweight to win a heavyweight title and the 7th sub 200 pound champion to do so as Spinks, Moorer and Jones were 175 pound champions(this seems archaic now). Gassiev is looking for a new opponent as Yoka had a training camp injury and it seems like Joyce who was fighting a Russian prospect will be upgraded to a challenger. On short notice with a limited budget I can't see anybody with a bigger name challenging than this if the WBA approves this request.

A light weekend of boxing, it looks like. If anyone knows of another card, please post it. I'm interested in seeing Suslenkov fighting this week, as Ambrose posted earlier.

July 11: Moscow, Russia

  • Title fight: Murat Gassiev vs. Peter Kadiru, 12 rounds, for Gassiev's WBA "regular" heavyweight title
  • Artem Suslenkov vs. Joe Joyce, 10 rounds, heavyweights
  • Murad Khalidov vs. Arslan Yallyev, 10 rounds, heavyweights
  • Aleksei Egorov vs. David Dzukaev, 10 rounds, cruiserweights
  • Sharabutdin Ataev vs. Jose Uzcategui, 10 rounds, light heavyweights
  • Vyacheslav Rogozin vs. RV Deniega, 6 rounds, bantamweights

It looks the WBA balked on the shot Joyce as a last minute replacement for Yoka who himself was a fairly weak challenger. While Kidiru is low profile and rather mediocre he doesn't look like a character that Boris Karloff or Bela Lugosi played in horror movies and Joyce has been looking increasingly more like that since he was blasted out by Zhang.

Interestingly a few boxing insiders have Joyce as a live dog against the Russian prospect but I don't see it unless Suslenkov is more of suspect than a prospect.

I like Suslenkov, a devout Christian who does his ringwalk with hymns playing. He's a very good, entertaining, aggressive boxer.

But he's just 6'1" with a reach of 72" compared to Joyce being 6'6" with a reach of 80". It's a natural cruiserweight against a super heavyweight.

Suslenkov does a lot of infighting, but with Joyce being so much bigger he may tire the Russian out by leaning on him.

Anyway, it's a very good boxing event. https://boxrec.com/en/event/952270 There are four heavyweight fights, and eight of the ten matchups appear to be competitive. And it will be shown on both DAZN and YouTube.

As I speculated Joyce was no match for the Russian prospect. He took a worse beating at points than when he mysteriously surrendered. Hopefully he doesn't see the inside of the ring again as a fighter as heart and grit was the only thing he had and now even that is gone.

As for Suslenkov he put in workman like performance when he felt the need he cranked it up a gear and made Joyce surrender I would have liked him to step around the wide open Joyce who was open for head combinations as the few he landed buckled the knees of Joyce.

Gassiev made easy work of the Afro-German who in the end was reduced to a heavy bag who was on the verge of being violently ko'd.

This week is another slow week as the bronze medal match and of course the World Cup final dominate the weekend. It seems like the Pacheco headlined card is devoid of White fighters and the other North American based card on ProBox TV only has Argentine Guido Schramm as a B side opponent against a prospect. This weekend looks like a hard pass for me as none of these fights look intriguing and I still don't know where to find ProBox fights which generally are obscure club fights.

https://www.espn.com/boxing/story/_/id/49360506/ex-champ-ruiz-face-knyba-sept-4-matchroom-debutOut of the ring news had Andy Ruiz signing with Matchroom promotions and he has fight signed for early September in Newark NJ against Polish national Damian Kynba. This is very winnable fight for the Pole as Ruiz has looked semi shot for years and he has huge height and reach advantage. I think Hearn is playing both sides of the fence here as if Ruiz wins he is suddenly "marketable" and if the Pole wins he can rebound and have a large ethnic fan base in New Jersey similar to Adamek did.
