Ministers want more British players
By Nigel Morris, Home Affairs Correspondent
Published: 11 August 2007

As the eagerly anticipated Premier League football season kicks off today, clubs are coming under pressure from ministers to increase the number of home-grown players, amid fears that the English national side is suffering from the dominance of foreigners in domestic teams.

James Purnell, the Culture Secretary and an Arsenal supporter, has indicated that he wants clubs to devote more money, time and effort to nurturing talented young British footballers, rather than filling their squads with overseas stars. Mr Purnell has privately conveyed to the football authorities his dismay at the way some clubs are failing to encourage domestic talent as they spend huge television revenues...

NOBLE CALLS FOR FOREIGN QUOTA

West Ham's England under-21 midfielder Mark Noble has called for the introduction of a quota on the number of foreign players in the Barclays Premier League.

Noble is concerned for the future of the England team - and no doubt his own pathway to the top - as managers increasingly look overseas to strengthen their squads...

I love nationialism. The forgotten virtue. Would love to see one of our own politicians make this arguement for baseball with more and more Latin Americans coming into MLB at the expense of White Americans and Black Americans for that matter.

Yeah, this is a good development. More and more European soccer-players need to speak out on this issue.

Geez, the Premier League season is starting up already?? No wonder these guys burn out when they're 30.

Slow down, guys, stretch out your careers!

Despite the influx of foreigners there is still a large contingent of top quality British players (always will be). The opening day of the season displayed some fine 'young' British talent most notably a fine goal from Matt Derbyshire (21) of Blackburn with his first touch of the game. Also on the same team is David Bentley (22) who is an awesome talent. Watch out for Gareth Bale (18) of Tottenham this season. He already has the potential to become one of the worlds top 5 left backs. There's nothing missing from his game apart from experience. There are many other young gems who will come through strong this season.
