I love sports history and looking at a particular date when an event happened.Today's date sticks out for me.Exactly 28 years ago to the day,Wednesday May,11,1977 Ken Norton KO'ed Duane Bobick at 58 secounds of the first round at Madison Square Garden.Norton was known as a bit of a White Hope killer as he has beaten a number of signifigant white fighters in his career like Boone Kirkman,Jerry Quarry,Tex Cobb and the aforementioned Bobick.Flash forward to May 11,1981 and Norton was looking to add another White Hope to his list, this time it was Gerry Cooney. The fight was held at Madison Square Garden the site of the Bobick execution as well as Quarry's.The fight was strikingly similar to the Bobick fight, but in reverse.Cooney scored the first round KO in just 54 secounds,it was sweet revenge, man.I may sound a little deranged, but when Cooney had Norton against the ropes and was teeing off on him, landing several heavy shots on a defenseless Norton,I loved it.Whack, whack and whack,it was great.A close-up of Norton showed just how out he was.Memories.
