Interview with Korobov from Boxingtalk.com

RB: What's new with you?

Matvey Korobov: I am having a great time. I have just been training for about 5 months. It is nice to learn the pro style.

RB: Do you like the pro style better?

MK: Yes. I am blending my amateur style with the pro style and it is working out well. I learning the pro hook and different ways to block and throw different straight punches.

RB: What changes in the way you fight have you noticed since you started working with Dan Birmingham?

MK: He has helped me develop a pro style hook and blocking. Dan told me that he wasn't going to teach me to box. He said he didn't need to. He said he would mix my amateur style with the pro style. He said I had the boxing and the body. I just needed to refine my style. I was used to the 2 minute rounds in the amateurs and am having to adjust to 3 minute rounds.

RB: Tell us about your Olympic experience?

MK: It was my dream to be in the Olympics. It was a good experience. The problem is the Olympic Games are politically motivated. It is not a sport. The referees are no good. It is just not a sport. I knew my future was in the pros and that is why I was with Cameron (Dunkin) and I signed with Top Rank.

RB: You turned pro in November and you have been fighting once a month so far in your career. How many times are you going to fight this year?

MK: I think 8-10 times this year. I rest a week or so between fights and then I am running out at the beach again and going to the gym. This is my life so I have to train hard. Luckily I haven't had any injuries. Dan and my father really help me. I think 10 fights this year would be perfect. After my fight in February (Cotto undercard), I will take a month vacation and go back to Russia and have a nice rest. Then I will get back to fighting every month. I will also be on the Hatton vs Pacquiao undercard.

RB: I bet you enjoy running on the beach a lot more than out in the cold in Russia?

MK: (laughing)Definitely. A lot of the time we have to run indoors at the gym in Russia or I have to go swim in the pool instead.

RB: Do you know who you are going to fight on February 21st?

MK: No I don't. They had a guy lined up. All I know is his last name was Arreola and then he said he didn't want to get in the ring with me. Cameron told me not to worry and just work in the gym and they will get me an opponent.

RB: Do you have a message for the fans?

MK: The Russian fans know me and I will put on a good show for them in New York on the 21st. I hope the American fans and all the other fans see me fight. I think they will like my style. I think I have a good future and hopefully in a year or two I will get a title shot.Edited by: Blue Devils

Korobov has great potential, he just needs some polishing and experience. Another 20 or so fights and he's ready for a title shot.

Korobov was impressive tonight.

You can download a good quality video of the fight from a link on this website:

Korobov vs. Bartinelli (HBO, AVI, 165 MB)

Type in the numbers, then hit the green icon.

Then go to the next screen (it asks if you want to download a toolbar, so unclick the box)

Then click on the blue line, and it will ask what folder to save it in, and then download the fight. Takes five to ten minutes to download, and it's excellent quality.

I see he is 5-0 right now. Everyone says he is the future of the middleweight division. I don't know if he could beat Abraham or Pavlik though.

Korobov fight to be televised

Top Rank is planning to show some of the undercard fights free prior to Saturday's Pacquiao-Cotto PPV telecast starts, including a bout featuring the highly touted Olympian middleweight Matt Korobov (7-0, 6 KOs). "We are going to do something very unique on the night of the 14th,"Â￾ revealed Hall of Fame promoter Bob Arum. "We are going to feed the part of the undercard that is not on pay-per-view which features so many aspiring young fighters who are looking to make their mark on boxing and we are going to put it on various channels on inDemand, cable systems, on DirecTV and on Dish Network and that will run from 7-8:30 PM ET and it will feature fighters like Matt Korobov, the young Russian sensation; Rodrigo Garcia from Los Angeles, a real future prospect. Then at 8:30PM ET, a half hour prior to the pay-per-view, we're doing a special 30-minute show which is very exciting and that leads into the pay-per-view telecast which begins at 9PM ET."Â￾

Matvey settles for a dominant decision win, 60-54 on all three cards.

His opponent, who has never been stopped, obviously has a very good chin.

From Fightnews

In a middleweight contest 2008 Olympic standout Matt Korobov (9-0, 7 KOs) earned his ninth professional victory stopping Ken Dunham (6-12-1) at 1:29 of the third round. After putting Dunham down at the end of the first round, Korobov battered his opponent in the second. Korobov forced Dunham to the canvas early in the third with a barrage of punches and finished the fight with a sweeping left cross.
