Matt Suhey RIP

That's some sad news. Matt Suhey was a helluva all-around running back. He's best known as Walter Payton's blocker but he had a great career at Penn State and followed that up with a distinguished ten year career with the Bears.
Despite playing at the time of Payton, Suhey ran and caught the ball quite a bit, with his peak rushing year being 1983 when he ran for 681 yards and caught 49 passes for 429 yards, giving him over 1,100 total yards that season.
He's mentioned in our "Current and Past Fullbacks Who Should Have Been Starting Power Backs in the NFL" and he could indeed have been a perennial thousand yard rusher. But he only got as many touches as he did because Mike Ditka was one of the relatively fairest head coaches of the past 40 years. These are his highlights as posted by El Gringo in that thread. Toward the end of Walter Payton's life, Matt Suhey helped take care of him. Payton noted they were reenacting "Brian's Song," and said, "This time the brother dies."
