Jones looks like he would be a good candidate for a
throwback offense from the pre-1970's. He has the strength to
shed poor arm tackles from fat noseguards and DE's on reverses.
He has the speed to beat linebackers on slow developing run plays and
power-sweeps.

Jones could also be a key part of a west-coast
offense. He has the quickness to get out to the flat and the raw
size and strength to get additional yardage after a short pass.

Wait a minute, on NFL films yesterday I saw a
special feature on the west-coast offense receivers. This new
breed of receiver has to be big, strong, and also fast. It only
featured black players. White, receiving TE Jeremy Shockey is
faster and bigger than Jerry Rice but was no where to be found, while
Jerry Rice was accredited with being the greatest of the bunch. There
was nothing on Ed McAffery. I think I heard the phrase "athletic
diversity" to denote a well rounded receiving core, but it connotes
something very differently. This must mean that the west coast
offense has become an excuse to get more blacks in the NFL.

Matt Jones is a new breed of athlete just as Michael VIck is.

Note: I think Jerry Rice was the greatest receiver of his day, but he
is becoming a Ruthian figure and should not overshadow other players.

Matt Jones has been impressing other players and the
coaches in Jacksonville. They say that he is well ahead
of schedule. He is picking up bits and pieces of the
offense very quickly.Hopefully, this will translate into
a big rookie year for Jones.

I'm counting on him getting a good number of catches, otherwise, I won't be watching their games. I have never been a Jacksonville fan.

I hope you're right about Leftwich to Jones and Volek to Bennett. I see Leftwich as a bigger question mark than Jones, though of course almost allNFL fans see it the other way.

I'm not saying he won't succeed, only that he still has a ways to go. He may have thrown only 10 picks last year, but the fact is Jacksonville had a lousy offense. Fifteen TD passes is not very many. Almost all of their games were low-scoring defensive struggles. It wasn't all Leftwich's fault by any means. I hope he and the Jags' passing offense does step up this year because I want Matt Jones to be successful.

I wouldn't hesitate to rank him up there with Roethlisberger, Palmer and Carr... ahead of struggling young QBs like Boller, Manning, Harrington, McCown, Grossman and the eternally overrated Vick.Edited by: hollywoodnorth

I just hope he gets a fair share of throws his way this year. He can't prove his amazing ability without an honest shot!

I'm with you Don on the Leftwich question. This is the NFL not High School - fifteen touchdowns is very low. Of course, most of this is due to the stagnant offense in general, but has any quarterback recieved so much praise for this type of production? Many other white quarterbacks have alsolead winning teamswith similarily dismal numbers but were summarily replaced. Trent Dilfer, Kyle Boller, Brad Johnson, Doug Flutie, Rich Gannon, jim harbough, Neil O' Donnel etc, etc, etc. Why does Leftwich get the title of franchise quarterback without really proving anything??? For whatever it's worth, Jones had 2 catches for a team high 42 yards in an intrasquad scrimmage Friday dominated by the Jags defense. Man I hope he kicks butt right off the bat as a rookie. I hope he at least gets that opportunity.

I think in those sorts of things,
all you can really do is establish credibility. Jones seems to
have done that. If Jones had 250 receiving yards, it would not
make much more of a difference that 45 yards since it is not even a
pre-season game. It was important that he had a productive game.

Cris Carter'd latest NFL piece atYahoo. Trying to to place him in the tight end slot.

Rookie to watch: Matt JonesTheJacksonvill Jaguarswill use him as a tight end to capitalize on the crackdown on illegal contact. Jones will be great going down the field against linebackers. He's a phenomenal athlete who played quarterback and wide receiver at Arkansas, but he'll never be a wide receiver in the NFL. He'll cut his teeth using his 4.3 speed against linebackers who are running 4.5s or 4.6s.

as for Matt Jones, i'm an Arkansas boy, and everything we've been hearing from the Jags has been impressive. evidently he's becoming byron leftwich's new best friend. i've played basketball both with him and against him and it's almost unbelievable how agile and explosive he is! incredible! i know some folks on here wanted him to get a shot at qb, but he doesn't have a great arm. the ball hangs on him pretty bad, and with his shoulder problem his throwing motion never got consistent enough to fix those issues. i truly think that wide receiver is gonna be where he blows up. barring injuries, he's a legitimate candidate to be rookie of the year in my opinion.
