Hello, first time poster long time reader.

The best example that I can think of was Bert Emanuel. He was a QB at Rice and became a WR in the NFL. Had a decent but not super career. But the one thing that he did bring was the Bert Emanuel rule to the league. From Answers.com

While playing for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers against the St. Louis Rams in the 1999 NFC Championship Game, Emanuel made a thirteen yard reception at the Rams' 22 yard line with 47 seconds remaining in the game, which would have given Tampa Bay a realistic chance to continue a potential game-winning drive. However, despite the fact that Emanuel clearly controlled the ball at every point during the catch, the officials determined that the nose of the ball had touched the ground as he brought it into his body. After a review, the catch was overturned, and Tampa Bay went on to lose the game, 11-6. [1]

The enusing controversy prompted the NFL to clarify the rule regarding what constitutes a valid pass reception. This would come to be known as "The Bert Emanuel Rule."

Welcome to the board mr johnnynofear, thanks for the trivia. I think Chase Lyman was a college QB and I know that Antwaan Randle El was a QB at Indiana. I remember Rex Kern many years ago from Ohio St. converted to DB after being a QB there.

Josh McCown played a couple plays at WR for the Lions last year as they acknowledged his athleticism (for about 10 min.

) He's been released and will never get another shot of course.

he's on Raiders roster, as a QB.

Just read on a fantasy site that both Reggie Williams and Matt Jones will have to step it up just the make the Jags roster. Even for the Caste system, this is just unbelievable. Williams has not looked very impressive, but Jones has shown great potential, all the while struggling against all the various Caste forces aligned against him. The Jags seem to prefer ex- Brown castoff, journeyman Dennis Northcutt, whom they cannot stop raving about. The plight of Jones should make us all realize how hard it will be for any white player to succeed in the nearly all-black NFL at this point. If Jones cannot be given a fair chance, with his unparalleled combo of size and speed, what white player will they ever let play?

let's hope that there are at least one or two coaches in the league that will appreciate Jones and sign him IF he gets cut.

Chase Lyman was Aaron Rodger's main deep threat as a wide receiver at Cal. They hooked up on some beauties, as long as Lyman could stay healthy. I think Lyman's injury issues have hurt his NFL chances. As far as I know, he never played QB in college.

If the ****uars do cut Jones, surely someone else will pick him up. The Forty-Niners cut Ed Mcaffrey, who went on to have a very productive career in Denver. Jones has at least the talent of Mcaffrey.

Why is my post count stuck at 229? Edited by: Hockaday

I hope the Jags cut Jones and hegets the opportunityto play for one of the few teams that will give him a chance to develop his immense talent. As long as the Dynamic Duo of Jack Del Rio and James Harris are running the show in Jacksonville, that team will remain the NFL's flagship Caste System franchise.

I cannot for the life of me see what Northcutt has on Jones or even Williams. Either way, I think that it is best for both Williams and Jonesto just cut ties with the Jags. Both sides would be better off. Didn't they pay Northcutt to just leave in Cleveland?

Northcutt is terrible, but he's out of a cookie cutter mold that the NFL likes -- short, fast, horrible hands, no particular feel for the position, and black.

Good news from Sportsline.com

In an interview with CBS SportsLine, Jaguars offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter says he is expecting big things out of third-year WR Matt Jones. "Matt is similar to Byron (Leftwich) in that if he can stay injury-free, his ability as a playmaker will make him outstanding," Koetter said. "When he's covered, he's still open because his size and unique ability to go get the football. This guy really tracks the football well and reacts well to where a ball is thrown and be able to catch the ball. I have not seen many guys that can do it like this guy. Now what's slowed him down is him getting nicked up a few times. Matt has a lot of versatility -- his first year, they used him as a slot receiver and last year they played him more outside, and I think he has the capability to do either. Our expectation is that Matt has to be a playmaker. Matt should be a guy we take shots to every game because he's going to make plays."
(Updated 06/13/2007).

Fantasy Analysis
Jones is definitely injury prone and has even gotten a bit nicked up at minicamp this offseason, but he should be OK. He's a tall, big, fast receiving threat that can jump out of the gym. His hands aren't the best, but he should still be a candidate for 60-to-70 catches. Consider him a low-end No. 3 Fantasy WR, one with high risk, but high reward. He should be taken in the middle rounds of drafts.

And then, we find items like this in the team by team WR rundown in the current print edition of The Sporting News:

"Jaguars. It's not encouraging when Dennis Northcutt is your most dynamic receiver. Reggie Williams and Matt Jones, both first-round picks, have fallen out of favor and appear to be busts."

Between the Jags QBs,who aren'tvery good, and the ultra-Caste nature of the Jags organization, Jones is gonna have a helluva time thriving.

BTW, here's another fantasy football site's analysis of Jones:

"Matt Jones (Jac, 21st pick) - I'm going to be brutally honest here on Jones. He has a reputation around the league of being called, well...let's say a female body part (not a vulva, or a mulva for that matter). This guy has all kinds of issues, and staying healthy is just one of the obvious ones. He was not physically strong enough to play in the NFL last year, and that was pretty obvious on tape. He was supposed to have this great straight-ahead speed, but he looked as slow as can be at times."

The Jags' depth chart has been released, and Matt Jones is listed as second-string, behind the immortal Ernest Wilford. This is just criminal. There is no other word for what Jack Del Rio and his corrupt organization are doing to a guy who could and should be one of the budding superstars in the NFL. If an incomparable physical specimen like Jones, with his unheard of blend of size and speed, cannot start over a plodding bum like Wilford, then what chance will a Mike Hass, or any other less physically impressive white WR ever have? Sometimes the Caste System even surprises me. They certainly make it hard to be optimistic.

A little karmic justice? Wilford hurt his knee today and it may be serious. Who will take his place? The great Dennis Northcutt, or perhaps rookie Mike Walker, who the team's been raving about.

From a wire report: Jacksonville Jaguars WR Ernest Wilford suffered what appeared to be a serious left knee injury at Jaguars training camp Tuesday. Wilford, who was listed as a starting wideout for theJaguars, fell to the ground after catching a pass. He was reported to be"wincing" in pain and unable to put anyweight on the leg. The Jaguars' medical staff is expected to update his status later today.

\ might see the light and draft Brady Quinn after Del Rio's equally pro-Caste fanatics in Miami passed on Quinn and build around a potentially great quarterback, but of course that didn't happen.

Don, I must correct you on something. Being that I live in South Florida, I follow the Dolphins pretty closely. The media here has been calling for Cameron and Muellers heads for passing on Brady Quinn, but the reason they did so was not because of the caste system. It was because they had BYU QB John Beck rated higher than Quinn. Being that I am a huge BYU fan, I can honestly say that I think Beck is going to be an awesome quarterback. He has everything you would want in a QB, intelligence, arm strength, leadership, and accuracy. Even though I like Brady Quinn, I feel he was hyped up because he played at Notre Dame under a very noteworthy coach in Charlie Weis.

Looking at the Dolphins draft under Cameron, it is pretty racially balanced. You have a couple of whites, a couple of blacks, and a couple of polynesians. Compare that to Sabans drafts which were nearly all black. I'm liking what I am seeing by the Dolphins so far, and I think they may be on the path back to prominence.

I agree with you. I think that Beck is going to be a heck of a QB in the NFL and will make Dolphins fans forget about Brady Quinn. The only thing that would concern me about Beck is his age. He has a good mentor ahead of him for a year in Trent Green and barring any kind of injury Beck won't be the starter until he is 27 next season or if the Dolphis are in the crapper come December. The Dolphis are going to have to get those pieces around Beck a few years quicker than they would Quinn and are going to have to get that Defense younger and still keep them solid rather quickly.

Wilford's combine time was literally (I'm not lying) a plodding 4.78 in the 40 yard (he's the slowest starting WR in the league). That's slower then probably most tight ends today.

In reality though Wilford is probably more valuable to the team than Reggie Williams who is a much lesser version of Matt Jones. Both Jones and Reggie are large long ball targets but Jones has much more speed, quickness, leaping ability, size and maybe strength.

Williams also dropped more balls last season than Jones but wasn't blasted for it by the media like Jones. Jones clearly also has more upside. He is newer in the league and if were white would clearly have Reggie's spot. Jones should be the number one and Wilford could be an adequate number two at best but is probably more of a number three kind of guy. Edited by: ToughJ.Riggins

Ernest Wilford as even a backup WR in the NFL is a complete joke, especially when you consider that he has the typical hands of stone that most black receivers have. His presence in the starting lineup, while a superb talent like Matt Jones struggles to get on the field, is a slap in the face to all white football fans. Even for Don King's America, this particular Affirmative Action case is unfathomable. I would venture that there isn't a white WR playing college football in Division I that runs slower than Wilford does. A white WR with a 4.7 40 time would be laughed at, if he dared to even visit a combine. This case is a glaring example of Affirmative Action, and Wilford being "hired" at a position he isn't remotely qualified to play is no different than all the black police officers and fire fighters who have been given jobs, even though their test scores were far, far lower than lots of more qualified white candidates.

Having seen Calvin Johnson since he was recruited out of HS here in GA (he almost signed with UGA), I'll admit the guy's a stud. However...he does indeed receive a boatload of (pro-Caste) hype as well. We'll see if he lives up to all that press. Having said that, I'd definitely say Matt Jones is the better all-around football player. Jones could have played QB in the NFL, but got shafted by the Caste System (as do all too many talented white players). Knowing he can play QB, WR and special teams on the NFL level...I'd take Matt over Calvin.Edited by: DixieDestroyer

But, who plays QB, WR and special teams in the NFL? How is that relevant?

Antwan Randle El, Seneca Wallace, supposedly Anquan Boldin will this year, and Matt Jones. When is versatility NOT nice to have? It allows teams with a Randle El or a Matt Jones the option to carry only two QB's on the active roster if they choose, knowing that their WR could fill in in a pinch. It also allows the opportunity for gimmicky trick plays where the WR takes the snap. Calvin Johnson is phenomenal and has a better resume as a WR. However I don't think Jones is getting a fair shake in Jax.

Jones did have the most receptions and yards in his rookie season of any of the WRs drafted in the first round in '05. Last year, despite nagging injuries and poor quarterback play, he went 41/643/4 with a 15.7 yards per catch average, not terrible by any stretch.

I was looking for a tidbit I'd posted a year or so ago but couldn't find it, it was a factoid on how many times Byron Leftwich had missed Jones when he was open on long passes. If Leftwich was more accurate, Jones' stats would be a lot better, esp. his big plays and TDs. Of course the situation iseven worse when Garrard's in there. If Jones was on any of the large number of teams with good passing games he may have had a thousand yards lastseason in his secondyear instead of routinely being disparaged and blamed for the obvious inadequacies of the Jacksonville offense.Edited by: Don Wassall

Just read that Matt Jones is now fourth on the Jags depth chart, behind not only notoriously underachieving, stone hands Dennis Northcutt and the slowest WR in organized football, Ernest Wilford, but also the renowned, highly acclaimed Charles Sharon. That's right- a 6'0 free agent out of Bowling Green is now ahead of the fastest 6'6 man to ever play the game. In other good news for white WRs, the fantasy sites are now breathlessly reporting that Jacoby Jones has "a chance" to unseat Kevin Walter as the #2 WR in Houston. Gee, I wonder if he'll succeed? Finally, our old friend Brandon Stokely had been taking all the reps as Denver's #2 WR, but now that unproven Brandon Marshall is back from an injury, he has automatically been elevated to the #2 position, although one fantasy site says, seemingly with a straight face, that "the battle between Marshall and Stokely will be one to watch." Yeah, right- just like Muhammed Ali's "battles" were always ones to watch. Really, things are just getting more and more ridiculous.

i think Jones will be allright, as even Leftwich realizes that he's his best WR. we shall see but i really don't see him falling below number 3 on the depth chart, and even then it won't be for long.
once he gets out of Jacksonville and some smarter coach with white QB takes him on, he will show everyone just how good he really is...

here's a thread from jaguars.com, even there there's plenty of smart fans who defend him, not surprisingly there's many more that want him gone...

here are my favourite posts:

"According to his Jags bio he is the fastest WR in Jags history to reach 1000 yards recieving (in his 30th game) That includes Jimmy Smith and Keenan McCardel. Both of those guys were recievers in college and became excellent recievers in the NFL. But it took them more that 30 games to get 1000 yards.

Getting a clue yet Fargin and the clown crew? "

"Yes, please cut MJ so either the Cowboys or Chiefs can pick up this "diamond in the rough" talent and turn him loose in an offense that could get him more involved. I am a current member of an SEC chain crew and have seen him in action. Say what you will about attitude. That may just be a product of the culture. But the up side is much greater than the down. The Jags are built around defense and its a very good one. In the right offensive scheme, MJ could shine. I believe all Jags fans should let it play out. However, one post earlier said it best. There are multiple teams that would have him on there active roster in a New York minute if the Jags front office was ignorant enough to do it."

"You Jaguar fans are funny as hell... talking about cutting your best WR lmao. The guy is a freak and has 2 seasons under his belt, he was your most productive receiver last season and that was with all the injuries and you guys want to throw him under the bus for some rookies and in some cases Reggie Williams who is the only bust on this team.

As a Colts fan it's disappointing to see the football IQ of you fans. Matt Jones had a couple drops but he also had 2 catches for 43 yards and was the most productive. Northcutt had a 1 yard touchdown catch and Broussard was in along time against 3rd stringers"

"The kid had some drops, but he rebounded nicely and made great catches. He has speed, always seems to be open, and is an athletic freak. He has the most upside on the team. Geez, it's only the first preseason game. Is it too much to ask you to be realistic?"

"That is PRECISELY what makes Matt Jones an enigma. He'll make a couple of boneheaded plays, then he steps in and makes a couple of plays that make you go wow. It's about being consistent, and consistency is developed through a work ethic, and if he had more of an attentive approach to being more consistent, he'd be a star in the league."

"good point. I would also add experience, which he is working on. He's a project. He's probably closer to being on schedule than not."

unfortunately, for most drunken fans, he's just the whitey that they can hate on... read it all guys, it's quite an... experience...

'''Off the field, Jags coach Jack Del Rio and receiver Matt Jones, a former No. 1 pick, seem to be fed up with each other. Del Rio has gotten into Jones' face and basically called him a pussy. Jones may not play because of a heel injury and his agent has been looking around to see if any teams might be interested in him.''''
