Calif. panel suspends Antonio Margarito's license

By JAMES BELTRAN, Associated Press Writer 6 minutes ago

LOS ANGELES (AP)â€â€￾Former welterweight titleholder Antonio Margarito had his license suspended Wednesday by the California State Athletic Commission while it investigates a plaster-like substance found under the boxer's hand wraps before his loss last weekend to Shane Mosley.

The commission also suspended the license of Margarito's trainer Javier Capetillo and asked both to appear at a hearing Feb. 10.

The substance was bagged as evidence before the bout Saturday at Staples Center and was being analyzed by the California Department of Justice, the commission said. The panel was investigating whether any rules were violated.

Commission Chairman Tim Noonan said the inquiry stems from a commission rule that limits the amount and type of gauze and tape allowed under a fighter's glove. He said the commission has authority to discipline athletes when their actions are a "discredit to boxing." Reprimands could include fines, suspensions or revocation of licenses.

The commission did not say how long the investigation would last.

Bill Caplan, a spokesman for Margarito's promoter, said the boxer has obtained a lawyer and plans to attend the hearing.

"He expects to prove himself innocent," Caplan told The Associated Press.

Caplan said he did not have any information on what substance was found on the hand wraps or what evidence the boxer planned to present. He referred further comment to the boxer's promoter, Bob Arum, who did not immediately return a message left at his office Wednesday night.

Margarito, of Tijuana, Mexico, lost his WBA welterweight title to Mosley in nine rounds and dropped to 37-6 with 27 knockouts. The 30-year-old didn't win a single round on one judge's scorecard, one on another and two on the third before the ninth. He had his hands rewrapped before the fight after a complaint by Mosley's trainer.

Margarito was coming off an impressive victory over previously unbeaten Miguel Cotto six months ago.

Well Margarito got 1 year and review before the boxing commission. His trainer got the same. They both got off lightly if you ask me..

I agree. A one year suspension is a blessing in disguise for Margarito. He needed a one year suspension! He was in back-to-back brutal fights. The time off should do him some good. A real punishment would've been at least two or three years. Pete Rose gets banned for life and this guy gets one year. What a joke. Edited by: JD074

He shouldn't be allowed to box again. Every win he's had is now tainted. He could seriously hurt someone using hardened wraps.

The trainer should be banned for life, and possibly prosecuted. But, this is Mexifornia we're talking about.

Information only, the commission members: June Collison, Christopher Giza, Peter Lopez, Julio Ramirez, Timothy Noonan, and Howard Rose.

Draw your own conclusions.Edited by: The Hock

I think Margarito's suspension is too harsh.

There was no plaster found, only bandages that had been previously wettened and had hardened. In most states, that's not even illegal!

Everybody is making a big deal about this, but the wiggers have been rejoicing to see their beloved steroid-cheater Shane Mosley back at the top.

When I look at the commission I see one white male, two for sure Mexicans, another ethnic, possibly Mexican, a female, and a Jewish guy. From my experience working around women and Mexicans, is they are crooked as hell. Especially Mexicans. That's why Mexico is third world, and California is becoming third world. They don't see cheating as cheating, and always looking out for their own is much more important to them than any sense of fair play.

When this was being discussed, I can see the woman and the Jew looking sideways at the Mexicans, and the lone white guy looking to cover his ass and not offend anybody. More or less a non-factor, which is what these motherlovers in this state want. So the Mexican gets a slap on the wrist.

One year is a joke. Something was wrong with Margarito's wraps, Mosely's manager spotted it. I always wondered about Margarito. How did he beat down Cotto and Cintron the way he did? They both might be ruined now. He's not that damn good. He had some help.

Mosely put on a great performance, and laid a good beating on somebody who had it coming. Edited by: The Hock

One year may not be much, but the beating he took from Mosley will FOREVER haunt him. He'll never be the same again, I guarantee that!
