They ought to hire me as Malignaggi's trainer. First of all, I know how to tie a shoelace. Then I'd have him lift weights so he doesn't punch like a girl. And then I'd have him start acting like a White man.
Werewolf, I don't think weights are what Malignaggi needs.
Malignaggi's forte is his hand and foot speed. He won the fight because of it. Extensive weight training will either make him put on weight or tense his arms and slow him down. If he puts on weight he'll have to fight even bigger men than he is fighting now and he will have even less power. If his arms become more toned and tensed as a result of extensive weight training he'll be slower and experience more arm fatigue during longer fights and his punch count will fall. No, more weight training isn't going to give him more punching power and make him punch less "like a girl", as you say.
Have you ever heard of Mark Breland? He was a black American boxer who won a gold medal in the '84 Olympics. He had a bean pole body which he wasn't too proud of as he covered up immediatly after fights. He was undefeated as an amateur and won a good many pro fights as well on his way to the top. He wasn't perfect by no means but he made the most out of nothing -and I mean nothing- by using good technique. Breland looked emancipated but he still was able to punch with some power.
Why have I brought this guy up? Breland is a good example of how good technique can go far. Malinaggi needs to bend more at the knees and push from the floor. He needs to "sit on his punches": when he power punches. He runs around and flails and that is why he has no power. You know something about weightlifting. When a weightlifter wants to clean more over his head he bends his knees and springs the weight up. A similiar idea is employed in boxing. The punch has to come from the entire body. A good example of an active boxer with this type of technique is a man you love to go to bat for: Ricky Hatton. Watch Hatton's short, compact, piston-like punches. He has laid a lot of welts with those!
