Mac announced that he won't be participating in this year's dunk contest to grow his unprecedented record of three titles, all consecutive. He'll likely hold this distinction forever, as the dunk contest was already likely to go defunct before he injected it with energy and following. The NBA could offer him the annual salary of one of their typical stars, since that's how much fan interest (and revenue) he surely generates, but that's outside their box of thinking (and also surely outside the CBA arrangement). His camp said he plans to release a pre-recorded compilation of the dunks he would've tried after this year's competition is over. I imagine he'll try to sell this himself, and this seems smart. And to be fair, it is always a subjective measurement - with the "judges" they typically trot out, it's likely they'd have him "go out looking at the lights" in pro wrestling terms.
I don't believe there's much shaming that can be done to convince a franchise to take him on as a contributor. The 15 teams with worse point guards (seem to) all purposefully want to lose. What, you want to win games? It de-values the 2031 draft pick that you are dangling to try to trade for LeBron James' final season next year. It's all stupid and gay.
Just a thought that doesn't deserve its own thread: when the NBA went to the "3 and D" or "5-out" model, the league's racial composition did not change very much at all. Barely a hiccup! So on that note, shout out to Luka Garza and Drew Timme, who could someday be leading Chinese teams to championships a la Jimmer Fredette.
