As for Sultan/ Briggs, yikes! If Sultan had problems reaching Austin, how's he going to deal with Briggs' counterpunches and 6'8" wingspan? Hmm....

Austin had a great jab that kept Ibragimov at bay. Briggs doesn't. Briggs is more like 6'8" Whitacker who Ibragimov destroyed.

It was a bad matchup for Lyakhovich, Briggs' best punch happened to be a counter to Lyakhovich's best punch. And SL for some reason didn't try to tag Briggs with a straight right when his hands were below his waist.
As far as the reach advantage, blacks almost always have a physical advantage there. But in this fight their was nearly a 6 inch difference between two fighters the same height. Briggs has above average reach and Lyakhovich has a below average reach.

I prefer to see the white versus black matchups right now. It's more interesting to watch and gets a lot of action on this board.

Lyakhovich didn't use his head. He should have listened to his corner man, who told him not to trade and to double up on his jabs. Lyakhovich didn't listen. Maybe it was his conditioning. Toward the end of the fight Lyakhovich stood right in front of Briggs with his hands down, practically inviting him to knock him out. On the few occassions Lyakhovich doubled up on his jab he pushed Briggs back on his heels. If he would have continued this approach combinations would have opened up for him. In short, Lyakhovich didn't box and didn't protect himself in the end.

Strange ending to a strange fight. When it happened, I just sat there, stunned and unbelieving, the way Sergei was sitting there, stunned and unbelieving.

Triad's observation about Brigg's best punch trumping Lyakhovich's favorite punch is dead on.

When it comes to listening to his corner's instructions, sometimes the White Wolf is a bad doggy. Maybe they need to bring in the Dog Whisperer to work his corner for the next fight. Edited by: Hockaday

I will agree with those who feel it was a very strange end to a very strange
fight. As in the other thread, I would think anyone that thinks Briggs isn't
juiced is wearing blinders.

Don't read too much into the Briggs win. Liakhovich fought a dumb fight but was a few seconds away from winning a unanimous decision. Briggs could not compete with Wlad or Valuev. Maskaev-Briggs would be a toss-up.

In any event, Briggs first defense should be against Sultan Ibragimov who hits harder than Sergei. A reamtch with The White Wolf would be nice as Briggs would not get so lucky twice.

Whatever you do, don't buy into any of these Great Black Hypes. Whites will have all 4 belts again very soon.

Actually he should have ignored his cornerman completely and just smothered Briggs. The couple of times that he did that he got off some good combos and Briggs wasn't able to return fire effectively.

When you've got a guy that's got a reach and power advantage on you, but is almost compelety stationary and doesn't even try to jab...that's basically the perfect opponent to smother. Jab jab to get inside, and then get into clinch range and outwork him or make him hold, which would have further tired Briggs out.

Instead in the last round Laykhovich sat right in the wheelhouse of Briggs and let him counter.

This is on fightnews.com. Hopefully we will get a rematch:

Former WBO Heavyweight Champion Sergei "The White Wolf" Liakhovich and his manager Ivaylo Gotzev are preparing an interesting case for review, in hopes of being granted an immediate rematch against Shannon Briggs.

Liakhovich lost his belt to Briggs by TKO at 3:07 of the twelfth and final round on Saturday night at Chase Field in Phoenix, Arizona, after he fell through the ropes and onto the scorer's table. Upon seeing Liakhovich fall through the ropes, Referee Bobby Ferrara waved the fight seven seconds after the final bell should have rung, without issuing a 20 count (per the WBO rules) to the still conscious champion.

"If you were watching on television, the Showtime clock stopped after Sergei's first knockdown," explains Gotzev. "But what we're talking about is the official clock. If you watch the tape with your own stopwatch, you will see that Sergei doesn't fall through the ropes until 2:59 of the round. And the referee doesn't wave the fight over until 8 seconds after that! The final bell should have sounded while Sergei was still falling," explains Gotzev. "If the bell had sounded when it should have, then the referee wouldn't have waved it off without giving Sergei a chance to get up. On the tape, while Sergei starts trying to get up, the timekeeper is in position and ready to ring the bell, but is watching the referee for when to ring it. If he had sounded the bell when he was supposed to and the referee had known the fight was already over, it would be hard to justify not giving Sergei a chance to get up. He's not saving Sergei from any more punishment if the fight is over. But because the bell doesn't ring, he has no idea how much time is left and waves it off to save the fighter from more punches. And if you watch the tape, you'll see that Sergei starts to try and get up immediately under his own power. Who is to say he wouldn't have gotten back in the ring in time? He should have had the chance to, but the fight was waved off because of the timekeeper's mistake."

Gotzev say he and Liakhovich are currently working on a formal statement that will be officially filed with the WBO and they are confident that the parties involved will do the right thing.

Relaxing at his home, Liakhovich says he just wants what he deserves. "It's not a true victory when it ends by a mistake. An immediate rematch should be rightfully granted and I hope Briggs doesn't try to run from me. I didn't run from him."

I've never heard of the rule before the announcers mentioned it (apparently neither had the ref) but that's what I had been saying since the fight ended. I thought it was a bad stoppage before I knew Showtime stopped the clock. And Lyakhovich fell threw the ropes; he wasn't puched through (a la Maskaev-Rahman).
Regardless, I wasn't impressed with his effort in the fight but Briggs's didn't do anything except Rounds 1 and 12.

"...But most white fighters out there aren't that quick/ athletic, unfortunately..."

I come to this site to avoid remark like that. I think there are plenty of athletic white fighters out there. Vladmir Klitscko is one of the most athletic heavyweight champs of all time.

JD said that? Must be a misquote

With all of the fat slobby slow black pigs that are fighting now I really don't see how that view can be justified.

I have to mildly disagree with you about white fighters lacking quickness and athleticism. Sounds like something I'd read in the pages of the typical sports rag.

Guilt by association. Cute.

There aren't many heavyweights around at all who can match Wlad's quickness or atheticism. Lyakhovich I believe is faster than most of the current crop of heavyweights, too. How do guys like Kessler, Calzaghe, Pavlik, and the Klitschkos win their fights?

I said that Calzaghe was athletic. I'd like to see more of Kessler. Pavlik is a tall, rangy, strong fighter, but he doesn't seem to be an exceptional athlete per se. Klitschko has good hand speed and power. Lyakovich... har har har.

Relax. There are plenty of athletic white athletes out there. I just don't think most of these fighters have phenomenal athleticism. They're good fighters though, and that's what matters.

I didn't say most of the black fighters are particularly athletic either!

So you don't think his counterpunching could keep him at bay in the same way that Austin's jab did? And doesn't Briggs hit much harder than either Austin or Whitaker?

That's why the white fighter should be taller (or faster.)

Oh, it's much, much more interesting... when the white fighters win!!

Okay, now I see your point. I would like to see some of the very athletic men of the World's Strongest Man competition compete in boxing. They already have exceptional explosiveness, power, strength, and endurnance.

Speaking of White athletic fighters, the Tommy Z fight replayed on VS last night. That guy is crazy quick and powerful. I'd rather see him in the ring than on the football field.
