In a desperate attempt to stop Robinson running back Lucas Caparelli, Lake Braddock tried just about everything last night. The Bruins stacked extra men on the line of scrimmage when Caparelli played running back; they flanked him with their best cornerbacks when he lined up as receiver; they sometimes punted out of bounds to keep him from returning the ball.
But in a 48-0 Robinson win, about the only thing that stopped Caparelli were the boundaries at each end of the field.
The senior running back scored six touchdowns, including five in the first half, to help propel No. 9 Robinson (8-1) to its fifth consecutive victory over visiting Lake Braddock (6-3). With the win, Robinson maintained its hold on the fourth and final seed in the Virginia AAA Northern Region Division 6 playoffs.
The Rams play undefeated Westfield next week.
"What can I say? Lucas does this every week," Robinson Coach Mark Bendorf said. "He is just a great football player. He doesn't take a lazy step, no matter where you put him. He makes big plays."
He made them persistently last night, creating a highlight seemingly every time he touched the ball. He took a sweep left for 51 yards to give Robinson its first score, then doubled the lead with a 64-yard catch from Matt Goff six minutes later. Before the half ended, he would score three more times (two runs, one catch).
Caparelli came into the game with 1,034 rushing yards, 390 receiving yards and 20 touchdowns. But even in a season marked by big games, last night's performance stood out. He finished with 141 yards rushing and 96 receiving. In the first 24 minutes against Lake Braddock, Caparelli accounted for 185 total yards.
"My teammates hooked me up," Caparelli said. "We were preparing all week for this game, so we were ready. We wanted to get our offense going every time we touched the ball."
Said Goff, the quarterback: "We were clicking on all cylinders. Everything worked."
Including the Robinson defense. A week after Lake Braddock running back Jordan Russell ran for 306 yards and three touchdowns, the Robinson defense held him to 74 yards on 22 carries. The Rams often stuffed eight players near the line of scrimmage and dared the Bruins to throw -- something they tried only four times.
The loss ended a five-game win streak for Lake Braddock, and players walked off the field already talking about how to regroup.
"They scored fast, and it just got out of our hands," Lake Braddock Coach Jim Poythress said. "We just got whipped in basically every part of the game. I don't know. Maybe they're just that good."
No. 9 Robinson 48, Lake Braddock 0 Run Down: Robinson running back Lucas Caparelli single-handedly overtook the Lake Braddock defense, scoring six touchdowns to up his season total to 26. Streaking: The Rams have defeated Lake Braddock five years in a row, outscoring the Bruins 202 to 27 in those games
