Supergirl has done it again. Ran the fastest 800 in the country this year, a time that also broke the stadium record in a venue also used by collegiate athletes. Imagine what she could do if she had competition. The second and third place finishers were also outstanding, giving these Dakota girls a sweep of the national 800 rankings, but they were still three seconds behind Laura.

Update on Supergirl:

She just won her 20th individual state title, winning the 200, 400, and 800 this year. In her 8th, 9th, 10th, and 11th grade seasons, she won the 100, 200, 400, and 800. This year she was finally beaten in one event--the 100--by up and coming supergirl (the next Laura Roesler?) Morgan Milbrath. Don't feel bad about the loss, though. The 100 is a long way from her specialty, the 800, and after that defeat (her first ever in h.s. competition), she went on to break the state record in the 200 (24.32) and then run the third-fastest 400 in the entire country this year--an awe-inspiring 53.25! That was, of course, also a state record. And she was racing against headwinds all day. Oh, and it's not like she walked that 100. She and Milbrath both ran a state record 11.97 in the prelims.

I have a feeling we're going to be hearing about supergirl for years to come. Oh, to be her agent when she wins the 800 in the Olympics...

Then again, I wouldn't mind buying stock in the up-and-coming Milbrath, either. She pushed Supergirl every step of the way in the 400 and finished with the fourth best time in the country. As a sophomore! Not even supergirl ever did that.

Congratulations to her on an amazing HS career.
And great to hear about Morgan Milbrath, who is only a freshman!
Amazing what these girls can do when given the chance to compete as sprinters!

I can't resist reviving the supergirl thread, and not just because she's adorable. A few days ago, I posted about her absurd 51 second relay split--the third fastest in the NCAA. It occurred to some track fans over on Track and Field News that if she lowered that time by just one second (and she's only a freshman, mind you), she could make the Olympic finals in the 400.

That's how fast supergirl is--even though she's an 800 specialist.

So the debate has gone on and on about whether she should take her dazzling sprint skills and drop back down to the 400. Right now, she's a very good 800 runner, but hasn't brought her times below 2:00 yet. She's much closer in the 400, even though she doesn't train for it. Here's a link to a fairly informed debate, for anyone interested. I'm sure a lot of you have ideas about why she was automatically pigeonholed into her longest possible event:

And on a related note, I was curious to see what became of Morgan Milbrath, who handed Roesler her won and only defeat in four years of championship h.s. competition (during which time Roesler repeatedly swept every event from the 100 to the 800). It seems that Milbrath has become a kind of new Roesler. This year, following in supergirl's footsteps, she won 4 individual state titles (100, 200, 400, and the 300 hurdles).

We can only hope that Laura reads the internet track sites including this one. You would think the coach would have figured it out by now. Yes she definatley belongs in the 400. This girl has some wheels on her.

Very interesting dynamic going on there. T&F fans are not at all DWF's, and yet here we see many of the posters on that forum with an almost instinctual decision-making process based on... well... not necessarily intentionally so -- because the mind cannot openly admit it -- but based on color. And several of the other very smart posters [one is trackster, perhaps?] seem to understand this as they lay out massive evidences and try to coax a reasoned response out of the nay-sayers, gently trying to reason with those who have a mental block in this area.

She is an amazing talent. If I were a coach, I'd be afraid to try to develop someone with such a broad range of ability. And a cutie, besides.Edited by: Observer
