I recently joined an LA Fitness Club about three weeks ago, and after a couple of weeks of being there noticed a pattern in the music they play. After about two weeks, I noticed all the artists they play are black artists. I know they cater to a younger crowd (as I am older then most of the members), but I was thinking about complaining and asking them to diversify the music to some degree, and perhpas play some music by some white artists once in a while (for example Bon Jovi or even some of the current rock bands).

I am not sure if this is a common theme in most gyms, or LA Fitness clubs, or the manager is selecting the music and just likes black music and thinks everyone else does as well. Perhpas some of you can comment on what you have seen at LA Fitness Gyms and Gyms in general.

Perhpas I am just from a different generation and out of touch with current music. Can some of you younger guys comment. I mean does your generation actually like to listen to that crap?

Hell no! I will listen to some techno and remixes, but rap and hip hop are absolutely ridiculous.

Mainly I like rock in almost all of its forms. The Beatles, REM, The Cranberries, Enya, some U2 stuff, Led Zeppelin, Smashing Pumpkins, Nirvana, Ozzy, Papa Roach, and different forms of techno are mainly what I listen to.

Bring an ipod.

I know absolutely nothing about LA fitness and honestly had not even heard of them before you mentioned it. Most of the gyms I have ever been to are the smaller privately owned gyms and not the mega corporate Gym's like Gold's and I am guessing LA Fitness is probably in the same mold correct? Anyway, where I have worked out in the past the music has been pretty much controlled by whoever is running the counter that day. Most of the time it seemed they would just put on the radio station of their choice. I am sure it is probably what they are interested in, I hear a lot of that crap coming from young peoples car's these days.

The craziest thing I ever worked out to was Christmas music.at Christmastime.

There is a mindset which still associates black music with being au courant and progressive. The sort of persons who bemoan the fact radio and popular music are so 'segmented'. The sort of persons who decide that all romantic scenes in movies must be backgrounded with sweet soul music. Antiquated and irrelevant. The 70 year old hipster with a diamond stud in his left ear lobe.

It's possible to cover an extremely wide range of good music and none of it to be black. I'd rather listen to the various Mexican genres (banda, blue note, rancheros, etc.) than black music.

An ideal fitness club mix would involve various tempos and vocal qualities. Techno at 120 bpm followed by ambient at 80 bpm. Hank Williams Jr. followed by Laura Pausini. MCR followed by Lenka.

With black music you get little variety, just the same tempo and the same caterwauling. Exercise can be monotonous and tedious, the music shouldn't be a mirror of that.

I used to train at Golds, and they played a ton of the rap (=crap) + R&B on their urban-themed Club Com network. Another (larger) gym I trained at also played similar "music". I asked the GM about why all the ******* themed "music", and he gave the canned response about "diversity of client's musical taste".

I train at a smaller gym now, but keep my MP3 loaded with Slayer, Pantera & (old school) Metallica...so I don't listen to the rock/rap/pop mix my current gym plays.

Dixie I would have payed good money to hear you say to the GM of Golds "Why all the ******* themed music!"

I currently have a great membership rate at the best Golds on the westcoast. The clientale is 90% white, therefore, they pay a mixture of rock/rap/pop/techno/dance music.

Newguy, if what poses for music at LA Fitness annoys you, just complain to the management to mix it up. If they give the diversity response, say "Ok, I am fair and white, so start playing some Danzig, Clash, Led Zep, Stones, you know good music!"

Typically the "mega" fitness centers, like L.A. Fitness, 24-Hour Fitness, Bally's, etc. have a corporate piped-in music stream. They have a few "channels" that the manager can select from, whether it be a hip-hop mix, rock, adult contemporary, whatever. It seems as though the management at your facility has chosen the hip-hop dance mix channel. It never hurts to ask if they can mix it up once in a while, since not everyone (even younger folks) like that cRap.

Westside, yeh...I don't pull punches and use alotta "PC" talk...I'm pretty straight forward/no-nonsense (at 6'8, 335...I can do that

). The only time I'm quasi-"diplomatic" is at work. The Golds GM thought I was joking at first because he laughed, but he saw I had a straight-face and gave me the ol' PC/BS response.

FBD, I'd definitely agree that the larger/mega/chain gyms use that same "canned" music format...which sux royally (of course).

I go to Retrofitness and they play all the oldies from the 80's. It's pretty good stuff like Van Halen and Fleetwood Mac. They also play techno which I love as well especially for workouts. Out of the two years I have been going there they only played crap one time.
