Joe Calzaghe has vacated his WBO super middleweight title, after more than 10 years and 21 successful defenses.

Hungarian Karoly Balzsay (19-0, 14 KO) will be fighting Haitian-Canadian Jean Pascal (21-0, 14 KO) for the vacant title.

Go Karoly!

Congrats to Joe, whose going on to bigger and better things. I've never seen Karoly fight, but I've heard good things about him. I have seen Pascal. From what I've heard, Balzsay should be able to win this one. I wasn't terribly impressed with Pascal.

Thanks Shawn!

We have a new white champion at super middleweight!

I hope he remains champion for many years and defeats some of the so-called "athletically superior" black fighters.

According to some Hungarian websites Balzsay will make his first title defense on April 25th against Maselino Masoe 29-5(27) of Samoa.

I hope not, Maselino Masoe (WBO #15 at 168) is age 42 and is BoxRec #120.

I like Balzsay, but this is neither an interesting nor competitive matchup. I would much prefer to see him fight some overrated black opponent like Isaac Rodreguiz or Edison Miranda.

Balzsay defeated Masoe by 11th round TKO.

According to boxrec Balzsay's next opponent will be German based Russian Robert Stieglitz 34-2(21).

From Fightnews.com

Super middleweight contender Robert Stieglitz (36-2, 22 KOs) surprisingly stopped previously unbeaten WBO champion and heavily favored hometown favorite Karoly Balzsay (21-1, 15 KOs) in ten rounds to claim the WBO 168lb belt on Saturday in Budapest, Hungary. It was a good action fight that became a war of attrition. As the bout progressed, Stieglitz' pressure began to wear down the champion. Stieglitz rocked Balzsay in round nine and followed up with an all out assault. Balzsay went down at the end of the round but it was ruled a slip by referee Joe Cortez. In round ten, Stieglitz continued to punish Balzsay, who looked spent. Balzsay's trainer Fritz Sdunek stopped a wobbly Balzsay from coming out for round eleven.

Balzsay will try to rebound from his first defeat when he faces undefeated German Eduard Gutknecht 17-0(7) on Dec 4.

Balzsay lost to Gutknecht by split decision.

The scores were 116-113 113-115 112-116

With Gutknecht we have another good white fighter at 168. He's three years younger than Balzsay at age 27.

From Fightnews

Former WBO super middleweight world champion Karoly Balzsay (23-2, 16 KOs) knocked out Misa Nikolic (6-9, 3 KOs) in round four. Time 2:10.

From Boxingscene

On Friday, the EBU was to have staged purse bids for a showdown for the vacant EBU super middleweight title with Karoly Balzsay, the former WBO champ, and unbeaten Ukrainain Stas Kashtanov - but shortly before deadline Kashtanov produced a doctor´s certificate and withdrew. On Saturday, Finn Amin Asikainen, former EBU king at middleweight, has agreed to replace Kashtanov. Asikainen is a huge ticket seller at home and P 3 Boxing is likely to make a huge effort to get the fight to Finland.

Karoly will defend his WBA belt against Dimitri Sartison 29-1 (18) on April 21 in Germany.
