"The bizarre stunt took place at the Sivas 4 Eylül Stadium and was captured by a dozen cameramen and photographers stationed around the animal.

Two of the Turkish team's officials appear to be holding the lamb down with one holding a knife in preparation for the sacrifice. A video taken by a bystander pans away before the incident takes place, but appears to give an indication of what is to come.

Players seemed to be quite casual about the whole thing and even went as far as to smear themselves with blood in an attempt to give them good luck before the game."

That's absolutely shocking and there should be some laws against it ....I remember that something similar happened during the 2008 African Nations Cup, with a cow being slaughtered on the pitch (the national team of Egypt was involved).

Giles Daldanus - Welcome to the forum, mate.

I recall the black "English" striker Les Ferdinand recounting his revulsion at a sheep being slaughtered prior to a match during his time on loan to Besiktas (from Queens Park Rangers) in the late 1980s, the fresh blood being smeared on the foreheads of all the players in order to bring them "luck".

This type of stuff should provide all of those people who prefer to classify the likes of Mesut Ozil as "White Turks" with food for thought...

Rebajlo - thanks so much for the welcome, looks like a fun community! :)

It's good to see that certain footballers are not afraid to voice their displeasure over such practices (even when there could be the risk of offending "cultural sensibilities").
