Wendling Hoping For Defensive Opportunity

It's a position Buffalo's defensive staff is looking at in a few different ways.<BR style="DISPLAY: none"><BR ..>The Bills strong safety position is currently manned by a former first-round pick, but would Donte Whitner be a greater asset for the Bills defense at free safety?

It's a thought that seemed to gain traction when Buffalo hosted veteran free agent safety Marlon McCree, who indicated he'd likely play strong safety were he to sign with the Bills. McCree eventually chose to sign with Denver, and so the Bills went in another direction re-signing Bryan Scott.<BR style="DISPLAY: none"><BR ..>

Whether strong safety alternatives will continue to be examined by the defensive staff remains to be seen, but one potential candidate who would relish the opportunity is second-year safety John Wendling. After leading special teams in tackles as a rookie and being an integral part of the league's number one punt coverage unit, Wendling's rookie season exceeded his expectations.<BR style="DISPLAY: none"><BR ..>

"I've always felt like I could contribute on special teams and I could make a difference there," he said. "I look at the way the season went and how things unfolded in terms of the positions I was in to make plays and I would have never thought that. I was playing gunner for the first time and I would have never thought I'd be doing that. All of it is a stepping stone I guess.<BR style="DISPLAY: none"><BR ..>"

Wendling is no doubt hoping to parlay a successful rookie season on special teams into a role on the defensive side of the ball. He feels he can deliver on what defensive coordinator Perry Fewell looks for in his players.<BR style="DISPLAY: none"><BR ..>

"I do feel like I'm a fit," said Wendling. "Perry's whole mentality is to make plays. He wants guys that are going to go out and make plays, fly around the field and get to the ball. I feel like that's what I'm good at.<BR style="DISPLAY: none"><BR ..>"

But at the same time Wendling knows he'll have to show he's got the mental part of the game down with respect to the defensive scheme.<BR style="DISPLAY: none"><BR ..>

"As much as I can do physically there's also the mental part of being in the right position," he said. "You see veterans that may not be the fastest guys, but they're in the right position.<BR style="DISPLAY: none"><BR ..>"

Wendling, who was accepted to a pair of Ivy League schools before ultimately deciding to stay home and enroll at the University of Wyoming, likely stands a good chance of being a quick study. It's why the second-year safety is confident he'll be able to challenge for a defensive role.<BR style="DISPLAY: none"><BR ..>

"That's the next step really," said Wendling. "I'll always be proud of contributing to this team on special teams, but I want to be able to contribute to this team on defense. It's a unit that's improved so much and has a lot of great players, and I want to be a part of that."
 
Special teams update
A few times during camp and once in the preseason opener with the Bills in field goal block formation, John Wendling has put his tremendous leaping ability to use.

Leading up to the draft the Wyoming product was known by most for his YouTube video that showed him leaping over a 66-inch high bar from a standing position.

Special teams coordinator Bobby April has allowed Wendling to try leaping over the entire field goal formation including the opposing line to see if he's capable of blocking a field goal attempt.</font>

Whether or not it's realistic to time that perfectly, since kicks are up in the air so quick off the snap, we're not sure, but Wendling has cleared players lined up on both sides of the line of scrimmage and landed in the offensive backfield.

At the very least it's entertaining to watch.

Wendling is an unreal athlete. I'm glad I had a chance to see him play a couple of years ago.
 
Wendling's an amazing athlete and according to one of his coaches, he's "a hard-playing, hard-working, high-character, highly intelligent guy, and he's tough and fast."

What's it add up to? Why a White Special Teams Demon and unofficial Team Mascot, and a contented one at that.

In the winter of 2007 when he was preparing to enter the NFL draft, John Wendling became known primarily as the guy who jumped over the bar.

Although he had enjoyed a productive career as a starting safety for the University of Wyoming, Wendling wasn't garnering a whole lot of interest from NFL scouts.
But through the magic of YouTube, everything changed for Wendling when a video he made â€" originally intended to be used as a recruiting tool to show off the wonders of the school's strength and conditioning program â€" hit the popular Web site.
Sometime before his senior season in 2006, Wendling set up a bar 66 inches off the ground in the weight room, took a few steps and leaped over it â€" an eye-popping display of explosive athleticism. During that season the school played the video on the stadium JumboTron when Wendling would make a big play in a game, but no one outside the Wyoming campus paid much attention.
Once it found its way onto YouTube, though, Wendling's leap became a cult classic. It's uncertain if it ever attracted athletes to attend Wyoming, but it sure helped convince Bills area scout Brad Forsyth that Wendling was worth selecting in the sixth round of the draft, an opinion Buffalo's director of college scouting, Tom Modrak, agreed with.
"I did the video to get my name out there, but hopefully now I'm known as a heck of a special teamer in the league," Wendling said the other day as the Bills began preparations for Sunday's game in Atlanta.
Wendling's wish has been granted. The video has generated more than 460,000 views on YouTube since its debut, but it's almost forgotten these days. Now, the only video opposing teams watch of the 6-foot-1, 222-pounder is of him racing down to cover kickoffs and punts the way few players in the NFL can.
According to StatsPass.com, a statistical service used by some NFL teams, Wendling leads the league with 24 special-teams tackles, three more than Lance Laury of Seattle and Derrick Martin of Green Bay. His 18 solo tackles are also tops in the league.
"His focus, his concentration, his intensity; when he goes down the field, I enjoy watching him play because he goes in there with reckless abandon," said interim head coach Perry Fewell.

There are dozens of players around the NFL who quite likely will never be factors on offense or defense and earn their living on the kicking teams, and Wendling is perfectly comfortable with his position on the team.
"Sure, I want to play safety, but right now my role is as a special-teams player and I'm happy to have that role," said Wendling, who is one of the outside gunners on the punt coverage unit, and is the R2 â€" second player from the kicker's right â€" on the kickoff coverage squad. As a rookie in 2007 Wendling led the Bills with 24 special-teams tackles. Last year he finished second behind Blake Constanzowith 17.

What do Hester, Wendling and Leonard have in common? Knowing their place in the NFL. "I know I am a heck of a special teamer. I'm happy to have that role." This is the kind of crap that lubircates the caste machine. Simply astounding, how the caste system has brain washed and made great white athelets subserviant to affeletic interests and TPB goals.
 
Bills safety Jarius Byrd is out for the season. Maybe Wendling will get more playing time. The Bills also have a corner out for the season as newly reported.
 
An orthodoxy can usually only survive if it is denied that it is an orthodoxy. If you were to ask these kids or their programmers why they accept the humiliation and mumble the caste speak they would quickly breakdown, but as long as they can go unchallenged the caste system survives even as it becomes a farce. Thinking and speaking outside the box is difficult.

Yes it is, and that is why I doubt that we can rely anytime soon on any white athlete playing vocal spoiler to the caste system. To do so would certainly mean the end of their career and their ability to make a living in the NFL. Even a league minimum salary is a good gig compared to going out and actually busting your rear in the real world day in and day out for less money. So they have to eat a little racial crap from time to time and be degraded as supporting characters to the "real" athletes, which I am sure they easily rationalize it in their minds. They probably figure it is not that much different from all the other crap that everyone else has to deal with at their jobs, and some of them are undoubtedly hoping to actually get jobs being mouth pieces for the system when their playing days are over. For that reason, I say it is almost entirely up to the fans to put an end to the caste system by not supporting it financially.

But in the case of "Hope" I am hoping that Toby Gerhart tells the NFL teams, "don't draft me if you plan on utilizing my profound skills running the ball as a battering ram, not going to do it." If he gets no takers, blow the whistle and play baseball. Under no circumstances agree to take the Hester, Wendling and Leonard career route in the NFL.

I am praying he takes my counsel.

That would be a great statement if Toby did tell teams not to draft him if they want him at fullback. From what I read about him he refuses to play any other position. I know he will make a nice career for himself and baseball but this doesn't really help us. Jeff Samardzija, a wide receiver for Notre Dame, made the same choice several years ago and went into baseball. He may have been forced to bulk up and play tight end or received very little playing time if he chose to play in the NFL. There is actually a good article about him by J.B. Cash. I would rather see Toby play America's pastime, than see him as a WSTD, fullback at 245 lbs slamming into over hyped affelets, on the side lines ala Hillis or making statements like Hester or Wendling, causing my blood pressure to rise.

Toby's course of action to help our cause is to be a feature back, nothing less than that period! The time for appezing the CMs and NFL caste masters is over! Its going to be very interesting what the usual suspects like F'ing Uncle Cris are going to say when Toby kicks ass at next years combines.

WA 33 if Toby excells at the combines and every team projects him or tells him that FB awaits him, Toby is obligated to blow the whistle on this racism. Right there he will be helping our cause if he states this and leaves to play baseball.
 
He should excel at the combine. I fully expect him to run high 4.4s or low 4.5's at the combine which is very good timed speed for a bigger back like himself. Toby is a warrior and will be ready come combine time. He may actually slim down a bit for more speed.

Right now, Toby is my one true hope for a player in putting a little hurting on the Caste system. Even then, I don't expect him to come out and start verbally bashing the system. He is a football player who wants to play Running back and doesn't seem like he will be satisfied in playing anything but. If he can force his way into the NFL without being made to be a blocker for the "real" affletes, manage to get a fair shot and be productive it will be a good thing. It is just a small step, but one that is absolutely needed. Beyond that though, it is still up to the fans to start holding the NFL accountable as well as demanding end to the Black racial spoils system that is destroying the credibility of the league.
 
John Wendling got cut a couple of weeks ago without ever getting a fair chance at showcasing his skills and pure athleticism. In 3 years he didn't start once and was only ever used at the end of games. Hope he finds a new team but with the little playing time he got I fear the worst for John.
 
Wendling is clearly not a Caste Football reader:

Wendling said he's optimistic of being back in the NFL next fall, and his agent, Kenny Zuckerman with Priority Sports, is working on that.

"All the teams (in the NFL) were made aware of my situation when I was put on waivers," Wendling said. "They said when they released me it was, ‘Because I was unable to pass a physical due to my injury.' So, all the teams were able to see that, and they were able to contact my agent.

"He's already talked to some teams, and it's more of, ‘Hey, what's the story, and when's he going to be ready?'"Â

Wendling, a Wyoming native, said it would be nice to end up with the Denver Broncos, but he's not that particular.

"It would be cool to end up in Denver because I would be close to home. Yet at this point, I'd love to play for anybody,"Â he said. "I just want to get a chance to play again this season. I have 100 percent confidence that I will be playing next fall."Â
