Senior from East Grand Rapids, in second-round playoff game last night ran for 390+ yards and 7 TDs ... in the first half! Has over 4,000 yards the last two seasons. All-state in football, hockey and lacrosse.

Of course, Rivals has him listed with no stars, and medium interest, but no offers, from Central Michigan.

One has to only get the video of last year's state final, and hear the raves of Stanley Edwards (former U-M player, Braylon's dad) calling him a big-time college runner, to know something is suspicious.

EAST GRAND RAPIDS -- East Grand Rapids senior tailback Joe Glendening said he is capable of carrying the football as many as 40 times per game.

He had two carries to spare Friday night.

Glendening ran 38 times for 207 yards and three touchdowns and a two-point conversion in leading the Pioneers to a 29-14 victory against visiting Grand Rapids Christian in the opening round of the Division 3 playoffs.

Glendening, who has rushed for more than 1,500 yards this season, scored on runs of 11 and 10 yards in the second quarter and from 1 yard out in the fourth quarter. He followed his final TD with a 2-point conversion after an Eagles penalty moved the ball half the distance to the goal line.

"Thirty-eight carries is not too bad," Glendening said. "I had holes all over. The line played really well tonight. We got off to a slow start but we picked it up."

East Grand Rapids (9-1) is scheduled to play Mount Pleasant in the second round at 7 p.m. Friday night. The Pioneers beat the Oilers in last year's regional final.

"With a guy like Joe Glendening in the backfield, all you've got to do is give him a chance," EGR coach Peter Stuursma said. "He said he is good to go with 40 carries. He is going to wear you down and he is going to make you miss.

"Our guys up front know that all they have to do is give him a seam. Other teams are keying on him, but they still don't know what direction he's going. When we run out of the I, he can go either way. We have to stick with what we're doing, and right now, that is running the football."

East Grand Rapids senior tailback Joe Glendening became the 36th local running back to surpass the 300-yard rushing mark in a game when he totaled 398 yards and seven touchdowns on 13 carries in Friday's 61-19 Division 3 district finale win against Mount Pleasant.

He's the third running back from East Grand Rapids to do so, as well as the 36th from the area.

And his 398-yard total is the third highest in the area ever. Two runners have topped 400.

GRAND RAPIDS â€â€￾ Mt. Pleasant High School football coach Jason McIntyre knew that East Grand Rapids running back Joe Glendening was pretty good.

But even McIntyre couldn't imagine that Glendening would rush for 394 yards and seven touchdowns, which he did, as he led East Grand Rapids to a 61-19 win over the Oilers in a Division 3 district final.

"He's a very good player and we came in with the attitude that we wanted to win the game and to do that, we had to contain him," McIntyre said of Glendening. "He got some seams and made some big plays. Sometimes when you try to win the game instead of make it close, you give up some big plays."

Glendening got started quickly for the two-time defending state champions, as he scored on a 58-yard touchdown run on the Pioneers' first offensive play.

After a Mt. Pleasant (9-2) punt, Glendening scored on the second play of the next possession via a 34-yard run to make the score 14-0.

"Our (offensive) line was working hard all week and I could see that they were ready for this game," Glendening said. "They were opening up some big holes for me and it is a credit to them that we were able to do what we did."

Mt. Pleasant got things rolling in its third possession, as the Oilers drove 71 yards for their first score with Jarrett Leister connecting on a 6-yard touchdown pass to Connor Odykirk to make the score 14-6.

The Pioneers (10-1) then found themselves with a 4th-and-10 on the Mt. Pleasant 15-yard line. A stop for the Oilers could have changed the game, but instead, East Grand Rapids quarterback Andrew Thompson hit a leaping Josh Drummond for a 15-yard touchdown that just landed within the grasp of Drummond, making the score 21-6.

"I think the play that really hurt and let me know how tough the game was going to be was that touchdown on fourth down," McIntyre said. "We had them on fourth down and were within a score. We had finally gotten some momentum and they got the big play on a great throw and a great catch. That was the play that really opened things up."

Glendening would add a 52-yard touchdown run before the end of the quarter to make the score 28-6.

"Their whole team is great," McIntyre said of the Pioneers. "They really get off the ball and the athletes they have are tremendous. It was a combination of our guys getting blocked and not being able to make the tackles and once Glendening got a hole, he was gone."

EGR's Glendening runs over Mount Pleasant

EAST GRAND RAPIDS -- Until Friday night, the only time Joe Glendening scored seven touchdowns in a game was on his PlayStation.

Glendening, East Grand Rapids' 5-foot-10, 180-pound senior tailback rushed for 398 yards and seven touchdowns against Mount Pleasant Friday night -- all in the first half. The Pioneers beat the Oilers 61-19 in the Division 3 district final at Memorial Field.

Glendening, who now has rushed for 2,087 yards this season, carried the ball 16 times Friday night, and scored on runs of 58, 34, 52, 52, 2, 70 and 46 yards. His first TD came on EGR's first offensive play and his second came on the Pioneers' third play from scrimmage.

"There were definitely some big holes out there tonight," Glendening said. "The offensive line obviously did a good job. We knew that (Mount Pleasant) had given up some points this season, but we definitely didn't expect this. It is probably more fun to play in close games, but it was pretty fun out there tonight."

East Grand Rapids (10-1) will play Petoskey or Bangor John Glenn in the third round of the playoffs, likely at 1 p.m. next Saturday at Memorial Field. John Glenn plays at Petoskey this afternoon.

After Glendening's first two quick TDs, Mount Pleasant (9-2) answered with a 6-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Jarrett Leister to senior receiver Connor Odykirk. EGR, however, scored two more TDs in the first quarter, on a 15-yard, fourth-down pass from Andrew Thompson to Josh Drummond and a 52-yard Glendening scamper.

"We knew their defense had given up some points this year, but we also knew they could score some points," EGR coach Peter Stuursma said. "When we went up 14-0 and they came right back, that was a little unnerving."

East Grand Rapids scored 33 points in the second quarter.

"I am not sure I have seen 61 points in the first half of a football game," Stuursma said. "(Glendening) is the Class B player of the year and he is almost apologetic for his performance. He gives the credit to his offensive line, that's the kind of player he is. Josh Drummond did a nice job of leading the way for him tonight, though."

Leister, who threw for 268 yards in the game, connected with Cody Wesenburger on a 10-yard TD strike in the second quarter and threw a 30-yard TD pass to Odykirk in the third quarter.

"(Glendening) is a very good back and he got some seams and made some big plays," Mount Pleasant coach Jason McIntyre said. "We have not been very good on defense this year. Their whole team is athletic, though. They have athletes at every position. The play when I thought, 'OK, this is going to be hard,' was that touchdown pass on fourth down. It was a great ball and a great catch, but there was our chance."
