RIP Joe Frazier.
I've met Joe, and he's probably the friendliest famous person I've ever come in contact with.
He probably did, as Space Hillbilly said, get the benefit of biased officiating in some of his fights with white boxers. I remember Quarry was doing very well in one of those two fights until he was cut by what looked to be a deliberate headbutt (which both the referee and the Jewish commentator ignored). That fight with Bonavena was not as one-sided in favor of Frazier as the so-called "Sport Historian" would have us believe, although Frazier did win the late rounds.
I give Joe Frazier credit though, because he truly was a great fighter. He won the Gold Medal in the 1964 Olympics. He showed a lot of courage in his fight with Foreman as he kept getting up even though he was badly hurt. That kind of heart is lacking in many boxers today.
And he never gave any indication he hated white people. Frazier's behavior outside the ring was gentlemanly, quite a contrast to like the loud-mouthed Ali and the foul-natured Liston.
