Joe Calzaghe easily defeated challenger Peter Manfredo today with a 3rd round TKO to successfully defend his WBO Super Middleweight title and improve his record to 43-0.

It was a great fight even though it was very short.He is by far one of the quickest boxers in the world.His hand speed just leaves people in awe.What a classy guy too.I can't wait to see him fight Hopkins.
 
There is no way Hopkins gets within an area code of this guy. Nard has slowed down way too much to have a shot at this point. The fight could looks similar to this one but the ref would give Nard the benefit of the doubt and let him go further.....
 
This fight sucked. What a rotten matchup. I never followed The Pretender because it hyped mediocre fighters far beyond their actual value. The general public, boxing idiots that they are, ate it up. Mismatches like this lose more fans for boxing in general than they create fans for Joe Calzaghe.

Calzaghe is thirty five, so he took a round to warm up. Once he did, it was over. Manfredy quit punching in hopes the ref would rescue him IMO. The ref seemed all too eager to jump in and share in the hometown cheers and approval.

What to do when a guy isn't fighting back but he isn't hurt? I think the ref should have called a timeout, looked Manfredo in the eye, asked him if he had a pair and was there to fight. Try a little shame therapy.

At least this joke shed some honest light on The Pretender, the retarded cousin of the moronic American Idol. I just hate the general public's gullibility sometimes.

I think Lampley let slip what he thought of the whole set-up when at least once he referred to Manfredo as Alfredo. Isn't that some type of cheesy Italian dish?

One of the reason A referee can stop a fight is that one of the fighters stops fighting back. This was exactly and precisely what happened in this fight. Manfredo was either unwilling or unable to throw a punch. So the ref stopped the fight. If he had thrown an occasional punch the fight would not have been stopped.
 
Tired Old White did you think it was a proper stoppage? I thought Mr. Beer Belly jumped the gun, and so did Merchant and Steward. This wasn't the amateurs here.

He could have tried a standing eight, but I don't know if they have that in Wales. I look forward to a fight for four months (I'm a big Calzaghe fan) and I get this.
 
I'm amazed Joe has the (hand) speed he does at his age. He's not the oldest
fighter out there of course, but when guys in their mid 30's are able to crank
along like that I'm impressed. His hand speed is deceptive. At least to me!
 
Calzaghe's hand speed is deceptive. When you're getting hit with a shot you didn't see, with two or three more you're not going to see coming behind it, you're senses begin to deceive you.

Manfredo may as well have been fighting The Invisible Man in that last round.
 
that's the conundrem with a fight such as this,do you give a title challenger like Manfredo every opportunity by delaying a stoppage or act with compassion and save a guy clearly way in over his head from recieving further punnishment.Theirs no doubt Manfredo was going to suffer a serious beating,and while the stoppage was premateur for me,if i was the referee i would have taken a serious look around the 5th or 6th rounds at pulling Manfredo out if Cal continued to dominate him the way he was.I would of hated to see him beaten to a pulp like Lacy.It was a masterclass by Calzaghe.Barry Mcguigen summed it up well'he hits you so fast and so often you think your sorrounded'
 
Bring on Jermain Taylor next, Joe will crush him weather it be in Cardiff or in the USA. Manfredo talked the talk before the fight but everyone knew that Manfredo never had a hope in hell. Manfredo might complain but he's lucky the fight was ended early because it saved him some stitches and an even more mangled up nose than he's already got. Im sorry about the way your national anthem was treated (it should never happen) but I think it's because all boxing fans here in the UK are fed up with the way your boxing pundits continue to downgrade our boxers and Calzaghe has never been given the credit that he deserves in the USA, especially after that 12 round whitewash of your new hope, Jeff 'no hook' Lacy. If Calzaghe beats Jermain (which he will) and claims his 21st defence of the title but is still not ranked as a top 3 pfp fighter then I can't see a white fighter ever being ranked as NO1 no matter how much he has achieved. The treatment of Wlad Klitschko in USA is another example of this bias. Floyd 'mouthy' Mayweather, whats makes him so special??? The guy has fought 5 less than Ricky Hatton and 6 less than Joe. I really hope Oscar wipes that cheeky smile of his face. O and last but not least, Sugar Ray Who? Never heard of him!

You're right, but what seems like an anti-European bias is really an anti-White bias that's deeply rooted in American sports media.

For example they love Samuel Peter, even though he's not an American, because he's Black. And they're just as negative toward the excellent young American White boxer Kelly Pavlik (30-0, 27 KO's) as they are against Europeans. Pavlik has never been given a title shot despite 30 wins and 27 KO's.

If the question is do I believe that Terry O'Connor was technically with in the discression given a referee by the rules then the answer is yes.
If the question is. Do I think it would have been better he should have let the action rolled until either
1) Manfredo went down 2) Calzaghe had to catch his breath or 3) (Least likely) The round ended and assuming conditions 2 or 3 existed warning Manfredo that if he did not start fighting he would stop the fight then the answer is yes. But, I believe Calzghe was robbed of a pure KO not that Manfredo was robbed of an opportunity to compete. What irritated me was the lake of respect that Larry Merchant gave this great boxing Champ. The Calzaghe camp has already tried to put together a Kessler fight and Kessler's people backed out so they should not imply
that Calzaghe was ducking Kessler. They also implied he had ducked the top "Americans' ( he meant black ) contenders. Well the airlines haul passengers both ways any big name American Contender could have set up a fight in Wales where Calzaghe sells out Stadium size venues. But I think maybe they wanted to save them selves the "agony of defeat'.
 
British fighters have traditionally been underrated. Maybe the US public is too accustomed seeing British heavyweights being stretched out by the American fighters ie Brian London. But a few of the middleweight contenders have had opportunities to fight in England and most backed out. Jones came up with 1000 excuses to duck Benn, and Collins(who fought out of England). Hopkins did the same thing to Calzaghe, now we are starting to learn why....

I agree. Calzaghe should've had more time to show off a little bit. We wanted more! And if Manfredo wanted to get beat up some more, he should've been given that opportunity as well.

I find it interesting how many foreigners are on this American site. I think it's because America is so blatantly Pro-black with it's sports Policies, beliefs and overall maltreatment of any white athlete that Americans themselves don't see it. It's ingrained in the American mind. How Americans can keep saying Don King and his boxing America is fair is ridiculous. It seems that every American sport has a blatantly Pro Black Bias. The fact that the U.S "Dream Team" keeps finishing third in international play behind white teams, some with a tenth of the population is ridiculous. Yet, Americans continue to make excuses for things like this. The excuses only bring you so far. There is no reason why the U.S "Dream Team" shouldn't be dominating teams like Serbia-Montenegro, and Slovenia. Europe hasn't had an influence on the NFL at all at this point. Europeans interest is taken up by Boxing, soccer and Rugby. Yet, it still perplexes me the question isn't asked by Americans why there are no white RB's or CB's in the NFL. But, I'm hoping that white European boxers continue to debunk the Pro black caste system!

Amir Khan is of Pakistani origin and boxing fans love him here because he is proudly British unlike most Pakistanis who would rather burn a British flag or bomb London. He is a great fighter with a lighting jab and hook, a bit like Prince Naseem Hamed but not up his own ass like Naseem was.
 
Amir Khan is British? If I were to follow that line of reasoning I could go live in China for a few years and call myself Chinese. Wouldn't that be pretty. Maybe once I'm through with them I could go live in India and call myself Indian. Who knows, maybe one day I'll call myself African as well. Call me a paper citizen, I can wave flags too. If Amir Khan is British I guess it doesn't mean that much to be British anymore.

With less fights then both Hatton & Calzaghe


Floyd became the legit champion in 3 divisions 130 135 & 147 and won a title at 140 and is going for another title at 154


Hatton had one controversial fight at 147 then moved back to 140. Hatton was also offered the Floyd fight twice which by his own admission he turned down because he felt that he was not ready.


Calzaghe has yet to win a title outside the 168 pound division.


Its more of an indictment of them then it is of Floyd that Floyd has done more with fewer fights then they have had.
 
Hatton and Calzaghe do not get the respect they deserve. However, Mayweather is a great fighter, whether you like him or not and I cannot see De La Hoya beating him at this stage in his career unless he decides to go toe to toe with him, like Leonard did in his first fight with Duran.

True. I don't like Mayweather's big mouth, but when I watch him in the ring, there's no denying his ability.

Joe Calzaghe and especially Ricky Hatton get a lot of unfair abuse in the North American media. Here in Canada, our highest-profile boxing commentator Russ Anber seems to despise Ricky, and it's easy to see it has something to do with Hatton being White. Before Ricky's last fight he said Urango was a tough boxer who would beat Hatton, and after the fight he said Urango was a poor opponent, chosen by Hatton for an easy victory. No matter what he does, Hatton gets no respect because his skin's the wrong color.
 
My bad. Cheers for the info Turner, I didn't realise Mayweather had succeeded at that many different weights. The De La Hoya fight will be the first Mayweather fight I will see so I guess I will find out how good he is. JD 1986, I do feel Ricky Hatton still gets stick for his poor performance against Luis Callazo and his fluctuating weight inbetween fights which is where he gets the name Ricky Fatton, and these criticisms are fair I suppose. But as you say he still doesn't receive the respect that he deserves in North America, after all he is a world champion with a record of 43 unbeaten. News about Calzaghe today is that he broke his hand again against Manfredo. I'm not sure how much longer his left hand can handle it.
 
My only criticism of Ricky Hatton that he gains a lot of weight and gets out of shape between fights. He's ruining his chances of becoming an all-time great. The problem with crash dieting to get ready for a fight is you lose some muscle and so strength. It's wiser to stay in shape between fights, and he could do this by fighting more often. He is in his prime years now, so he should make the best of his amazing natural talent before he gets older.Edited by: JD1986

Calzaghe has never had issues being hit with the jab, despite fighting slick boxers such as Robin Reid and Richie Woodhall, as well as the 6'4 Mario Veit, who also works from the jab. Kessler has shown an inability to fight on the inside in his matches against Beyer, Mundine and Andrade. His jab and the weaker defence of his opponents has seen him dominate them regardless of his limited range of punches although at times, Mundine was able to make Kessler look silly whenever he got on the inside.
