I think it's a good idea to tamp down discussion about the moon landings, especially when the race stuff is thrown in there when race has nothing to do with the arguments of those who don't believe they happened. ;) I know it's a part of this thread from previously but let's agree to disagree on that issue for now.

Love the clarity of the Webb photos, these are photos of the same area of space:

The best is yet to come - there will be new photos coming out during the rest of this year and during the years to come. Space is incredibly vast, there is plenty out there to study.

I'm looking forward to seeing the upcoming photos of globular clusters - Hubble made some new discoveries, such as very old white dwarf stars in the globular clusters, but Webb will show us more.

And the first direct imaging of planets around other stars will be interesting.

That will be awesome to see. Even much better photography of the planets and moons of the solar system will be great. Maybe the telescope will spur the reinvigoration of the space exploration program, but we'll likely need a pro-American government in place before that happens. I have very little faith in Musk, Bezos, Branson, etc., to get much of anything accomplished.

i wonder what the actual photos look like ... if my understanding is correct, all the photos that have been released have been touched up or amplified or detailed (not sure the right word) by artists who work for NASA.

The photos were not touched up by artists.

I think the whole “Webb Telescope” is fake. It’s just a conspiracy. I’ve looked up in the sky and have never seen it. The so called pictures are just a government psy-op. Don’t get taken in.

It’s a brilliant technical achievement but I have to say I’m really scratching my head as to what it’s value is.

I guess it’s why although I graduated engineering school I never pursued real engineering work.

Why haven't we had a mission to the moon since '72?

Only robots allowed up there now huh?
This is a good question to ponder. Have we lost the technology? At this point we should have a colony up there and with spacemen/astronauts bouncing around left and right in zero gravity.

But who the hell would want to live there? I mean seriously, none of the other planets in our solar system are remotely hospitable to life. Worse even than New Jersey !

The cost is high and there is nothing there. The Moon is actually not a very hospitable place, it cannot support life. It doesn't have enough gravity to hold an atmosphere, and there is probably no water.

But we are scheduled to return to the moon with the Artemis program in 2025, although I think it won't happen until about 2027 or 2028.

The larger moons of Jupiter are far more interesting. There is plenty of water on at least two of them (Europa and Ganymede). There may even be some form of life in the oceans under the surface.

I had a chance recently to visit the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. I was at a very remote location. Virtually no light pollution, one of the darkest spots in the continental US. The amount of stars visible was amazing.

It was the first time I had seen the Milky Way since I was a kid. I brought some good binoculars and was able to see the moons of Jupiter and some nebulas. Really quite an experience. Very humbling to look out at such a vast universe and ponder ones place in it.

When I'm governor of Wisconsin, we're coming for the UP. Michigan has been warned. Jokes aside that is some beautiful country "Up North".

A lot of strange missing people cases/UFO sightings up there as well.
