Golden Sports.Net caught up with Mackacek to find out the latest on his recruitment.
Obviously, you've had a terrific season. What things did you work on during the offseason to prepare for this year?
"Mainly lifting. I'm in track and field, so that helps with speed. We had a good strength program this summer, so going to that every day this summer. I'm involved with hockey and stuff, so a lot of other training. Not too many breaks."
You were 5-5 last season, so you expected to be good, but are you guys pleasantly surprised with your play this season?
"Me, personally, I knew that we were going to do better than we did last year. Maybe not 9-1 (now 10-1), I did not know that, but I thought that we had a shot of doing as good as we are doing right now."
What schools are you hearing from right now?
"Nothing to heavy as of right now. I'd have to say the heaviest school that has been recruiting me is St. Cloud, but other than that just a few Division II schools like Augustana, Mankato and Duluth. No D1's."
Have you heard from many D1 schools?
"I've gotten letters from like Northern Iowa and North Dakota, but that is about it."
Have you been able to make any college games?
"I went to a St. Cloud game, but that was just with family and friends. I went up there again to actually meet the coaches and stuff, so I've actually been to two St. Cloud games, but that is about it for games."
You are a multi-sport athlete. You are the captain of the hockey team and run track. With so many kids now specializing in just one sport, does that help you that you that you play other sports such as track which helps with your speed and quickness?
"Hockey, you get the leg muscles from the skating. Hockey does not have too much to do with it, but I enjoy hockey. I'd have to say track and field is the one that mainly helps me with speed and agility stuff."
What events are you planning on running in track?
"Track and field, I'm still not 100% if I'm going to be running it this year. It all depends if I am going to go to college and train. If I continue to do track. I'll be running the 4 x 100 and maybe the 100, Definitely, indoors, I'll be running the 55 yard dash."
What about hockey?
"In hockey, I am a right wing."
You are putting up amazing numbers. You are a 80 to 90% run team and opposing defenses know you are going to run, yet you are still up to put up big numbers. Do that give you pride in not only yourself, but in a very talented offensive line?
"It give me a little bit of a confidence booster. They do know that we are running, but the offensive line, if you make your blocks, they should not be able to stop it. Whatever works, works I guess."
Have you heard from Minnesota at all? They have three former Lightning players on their roster. Have they talked to you at all?
"I have not received one letter or talked to Minnesota."
Is that a little frustrating that teams wonder about your size, but yet you are putting up amazing numbers in a Lake Conference that is one of the better conferences in the state. Is it a little frustrating that you are not getting more looks?
"I would not say that it is exactly frustrating right now, but maybe when the season is over and I have not heard from big schools or D1-AA, at least, that might get a little bit frustrating. There is nothing I can really do about it, I guess."
Does that even give you a little bit more of a motivating factor that you say "Hey, I'm as good as some of these other players?
"It does. It gives you a little chip on the shoulder. In order to get to that level, you have to play good, so that is one of my motivators. I always think about that.It gets me going a little bit harder."
