Humble star
Record-setting running back Jake Machacek credits his blockers for his success.

When a high school running back scores 10 touchdowns and rushes for an average of 192 yards a game in the first three games of his senior year, it would be natural for him to talk about records and where he wants to play in college.
The first thing Eastview's Jake Machacek talks about: his offensive line.
"I love them," Machacek said. "We're all good buddies. No running back's good without your offensive line. I owe it all to them. I couldn't ask for more."
The combination of a strong, fast running back and a big, experienced offensive line is every coach's dream  or nightmare, if you're trying to stop them.
Bloomington Jefferson was the victim in the first game of the season, when Machacek rushed for a school-record 267 yards and four touchdowns. Jefferson coach Jon Leverenz doled out high praise to both Machacek and his line.
"He's a hard runner with great speed," Leverenz said. "I'd say he's at the top of the Lake Conference as far as running backs go. And he's got a great offensive line. He's tough to stop behind those monsters."
Those "monsters" are senior center Evan Sanford, junior right guard Scott Horvath, senior right tackle Jeremy Yeazle, senior left guard Chad Eul, senior left tackle Chris Morgan and junior tight end Seth Jonker.
"They always do their job," said Machacek, who is 5 feet 11 and 195 pounds. "They'd break their neck for me; I'd break my neck for them. A couple of guys there would do anything just to get that last block."
Their dedication is resulting in a record-breaking season for Machacek, who owns Eastview's career touchdown record with 26, breaking the old mark of 20 by John Shevlin, who plays now at the University of Minnesota.
Like Shevlin did, Machacek also plays linebacker, as well as strong safety.
Eastview coach Kelly Sherwin said Machacek concentrated almost exclusively on defense during summer practices, attending the offensive meeting on the day of Eastview's first game. Obviously, he hadn't forgotten much from the previous season, when he led the Lake Conference in rushing. Machacek eclipsed Shevlin's single-game school record of 202 yards and had an interception, too.
"He's a very good player, very physical, a real hard-nosed runner  a hard-to-bring-down-type guy," Sherwin said. "He's consistent. He takes care of the ball very well. He's good. We would have to say he's one of the better ones in the state."
He's also fast. Machacek was part of Eastview's 4x100 relay team that finished sixth at the state meet last spring. He thinks he's a little out of his element in the 100-meter sprint, however. He's better at 55 meters.
"I'm more of a quick-start, short-sprint kind of guy," Machacek said. "All the light guys pass me after 70 meters or so."
On the football field, he's usually in the end zone by that point. His longest run last year was a 69-yard TD against Jefferson. He's averaging 7.9 yards a carry.
Football and track are not his only sports. This winter, Machacek will captain the Eastview hockey team after leading the Lightning last season with 25 goals and receiving all-conference honorable mention.
He enjoys hockey and would like to play on a club team in college, but only if it doesn't interfere with football, his love.
"Wherever football brings me, I guess I'd play," Machacek said. "Everybody's goal is to play Division I. I don't know about the Big Ten, so that's my all-time goal. I'd play Division II or III if it's offered because I just want to play football."
Sherwin said interest from colleges is strong and getting stronger.
"He's had letters from Division II schools and a few Division I's," Sherwin said. "There's a lot of interest, and there will be a lot more as the season goes on.
"I think people really respect the way he plays the game. He has a good personality; the kids like him a lot. He's real down to earth and humble. You wouldn't know he ran for 267 yards and four touchdowns the way he carries himself."
In addition to his offensive line, Machacek gives a lot of credit to his parents for their support. His dad gets to the stadium two hours before each game.
"He's here before the ticket booth is open," Machacek said.
His mother never misses a game. She plans to keep it that way.
"My mom said even if I end up in Hawaii, she'd come out there and live with me until football is over," Machacek said.
That might cut into a guy's surfing time, but that's OK with Machacek.
"I love my mom, and I'll miss her in college," he said. "They said I could go anywhere I wanted, so they support me all the way."
