Jake Ellenberger is ready to launch himself into title contendership by taking on Jake Shields.
Ellenberger is an underestimated force at welterweight, winning his last four fights since a UFC debut defeat to Carlos Condit, which in itself was controversial as Condit took home a split decision.
Blessed with a formidable wrestling base and knockout power in his hands, Ellenberger is fast becoming viewed as a potential champion of the future at the age of 26. Now he wants the UFC to give him the chance to shine against Shields, the man who failed so poorly in his title shot against Georges St-Pierre.
"I would love it. I would love that fight," Ellenberger told MMA Weekly Radio. "It's definitely up to the UFC, what they want to do, but yeah if I could pick who I fight it would definitely be [Jake Shields].
"I definitely still think Shields is on that [championship] level; he's a top guy. Fighting a guy like GSP, that's a tough feat in its own right, but Shields is still a top ten guy in the division. I'm ready, I really feel I'm ready."
Ellenberger knocked out Sean Pierson on just 17 days' notice at UFC 129, breaking his hand in the process, but the Nebraska native revealed surgery has gone well.
"I broke the fourth metacarpal in my left hand. Just had to get a quick little operation, but it went smooth. Should be back in training in six to eight weeks," he confirmed. Edited by: celticdb15
