Jags, seeking depth at WR, sign Edwards, Hymes

Seeking to fill the veteran void created by the abrupt retirement of Jimmy Smith last week, the Jacksonville Jaguars on Friday signed free agent wide receivers Troy Edwards and Randy Hymes, both of whom worked out for coaches earlier in the week.

A first-round draft choice of the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1999, Edwards is the more notable of the two, and this will mark his second tour of duty with the Jaguars. The seven-year veteran played in Jacksonville in 2003-2004 and caught 50 passes for 533 yards and one touchdown in 2004.

"Jacksonville used first-round picks on wide receivers Reggie Williams and Matt Jones in 2004 and 2005, respectively, and is counting on those two players and also Ernest Wilford to emerge as playmakers."

So hopefully not.

Jones should be ready to be a star. He knewmany of the basics ofthe wide receiver position from being a college quarterback and knowing what his receivers were supposed to be doing each play. With his size, speed and great hands there's no way he shouldn't be used this season as Jax's big-play receiver and main red zone threat.


How Jones is used -- or not used -- this season may turn out to be the biggest story to follow in the NFL from an anti-Caste System, pro-fairness perspective. Given Jack Del Rio's track record and the way he's put together his team, it wouldn't be surprising if Jones gets treated very poorly and is pronounced as being a slow developing "project," or the talk of converting him to tight end begins again like it did leading up to the '05 NFL Draft.

has this blurb about the Jags:


WR Jimmy Smith's sudden retirement leaves a gaping hole in the Jaguars' passing game. The team won't have a deep threat this fall.


A guy who is 6' 6" with 4.39 speed isn't a "deep threat" while the slow-footed Jimmy Smith was.


The media was more than obliging to try to fit Jones intothe "racially correct" position of tight end last year. They'll be ready to pounce on him as a "bust" this season.

This just makes me sick to my stomach.I'm afraid that he might get the treatment that K.Curtis has gotten.The fastest and most talented receivers on their teams sitting because of the color of their skin.Let's hope that he somehow proves us wrong and demands to start.Matt Jones is the real deal!!

Jones is 6'6 and has a 4.3 40 and the media still doesn't want to recognize him as a deep threat. What a bunch of b.s. I can't wait for Matt to show everybody just how athletic and good he is.

"Black" Jack Del Rio thinks Jacksonvill's hawaiian contingent will straighten out Wayne HUnter. This is from the team's official site: "At the root of the Jaguars' decision to sign Hunter is the belief the team's Hawaiian delegation, including Chris Naeole, Vince Manuwai, Chad Owens and running backs coach Kennedy Pola, will provide a friendly atmosphere and guidance for Hunter, a Hawaiian.

"We are aware that he has a couple of issues he's resolving," Del Rio said of Hunter. "He's got some talent. We feel this locker room gives him the best chance to succeed. This young man has a chance to come in and be a better person and be a better player."

Hunter looks a lot different then any other Hawaiian I've ever seen. "Black" Jack also said that he was aware of the savage assault that RB Maurice Drew of UCLA was charged with before he drafted him. Drew and Bears DB Ricky Manning were charged in the attack. Black Jack seems confident that Drew is innocent: "On the Maurice Drew situation, I was aware of the incident before the draft. The facts, in the end, will prevail. I would just ask that you allow the process to unfold," Del Rio told reporters following the Jaguars' passing camp workout at Alltel Stadium on Monday. Guess Jack believes that the computer geek brazenly attacked the group of hulking football players by himself and poor Maurice was only defending himsefl

These must be two more examples of the type of "character" playerss the NFL insists it looks at when drafting, not the normal meaning of character but in the sense of having a criminal character. Don't worry Wayne Hunter and Maurice Drew, you will be magically redeemed at "Black" Jack's football plantation where you will join 50 of your brothers and one cracka named Matt Jones and Masta "Black" Jack will keeps everyone happy. Cue the music from an old Negro minstrel.

With Jimmy Smith retired, the Jaguars need one of their wide receivers to become the go-to guy.

So far, Matt Jones has.


Matt Jones has earned his franchise's respect and Byron Leftwich's trust.
Even though the team has not been practicing in pads, Jones has been one of the stars of Jacksonville's offseason. He has lined up in Smith's spot, performed the way the organization would like, and made the Jaguars believe Jones is going to come through like the first-round pick he was.

In other words, this spring Jones has been the anti-Mike-Williams.

Jaguars officials said Jones feels considerably more comfortable in Jacksonville's offense, at the position he was switched to last year.

Plus, Jones already struck up a rapport with Jacksonville quarterback Byron Leftwich last season. When Leftwich exited the lineup with an injury, Jones' production dropped.

With Leftwich back, and with Smith retired, Jones is looking at putting up some numbers as impressive as the ones he posted at the scouting combine in Indianapolis, where he ran himself into the first round of the draft.

With Reggie Williams a bust and Wilford an average talent Jax really doesn't have much choice but to give Jones the opportunity to be the main guy.

Jones is just one of those freakish athletes(sub 4.4 speed) that has too much talent to be looked over. Even for a team like Jacksonville that holds white guys to an unmeasureable standard.

I saw somewhere on espn.com that Jones was looking great starting in place of Jimmy smith's old spot during team mini practices.
