Yes, he's very quick and has good lateral agility- and his speed is just barely good enough to make him a very solid defender. Although he had the best +/-, out of the Magic starters while playing the most minutes, his night was very rough offensively. Hopefully, Redick will be an important 6th or 7th man when Carter returns b/c he has definitely proved his worth other than his off night tonight! The whole team really struggled. It looks like the loss of Ryan Anderson really hurt them as well.

Regardless of what is being said of Redick, he's done well enough in becoming a full-time regular rotation player. No longer is he a "space cadet," it's now a matter of him raising his game to another level:

as a starter:

30-35 mpg.
14-16 ppg.
3-4 rpg.
2-3 apg.

as a 6th/7th man:

20-25 mpg.
10-12 ppg.
2-3 rpg.
1-2 apg.

I am still hoping that Redick ends up having a Hornacek/Ainge type of career. He has the talent, it's the opportunity I worry about but he's finally getting consistent time this year for the most part.Edited by: guest301

whoops, it looks like I did the same thing the caste morons do and compare one white athlete with another! So here's hoping that Redick has a Craig Hodges type of career.

I watched a fair bit of the Magic-Nets game- and I have seen a lot of J.J Redick this year. I've noticed that J.J's teammates (other than Ryan Anderson) rarely get him the ball when he is wide open coming off a screen or after they penetrate and draw the defenders in. They also rarely pass the ball directly back to him for a give and go- when the defender is often drawn off him. J.J was doing much better with Ryan Anderson in the lineup b/c he was getting him the ball in these situations. J.J can get to the paint, but he is not a very good finisher at the NBA level at the rim. His mid-range game and 3-ball game would be much better however, if his teammates got him the ball when he is open- b/c he is a very elite shooter.

I should also comment that J.J is doing other things this year to make himself a very efficient player (as well as shooting a solid 41.5%, before tonight, for FG percentage- and 41.9% for 3 ball percentage). Tonight he was the leading rebounder amongst all guards and he had the third best +/- number on the team, despite shooting 0-6 and only playing the 5th most minutes. He played GREAT perimeter defense and dished out 2 assists and had a steal to just 1 turnover. J.J has been great all year in the important +/- category.

Despite all the hype for Courtney Lee, J.J scored more points per shot last year than Lee and he had a better +/- during the playoffs (I did not check the season). J.J also had very similar efficiency in the +/- category to Mickael Pietrus last year. And as JC showed last playoffs, he was instrumental in containing Ray Allen against Boston to help Orlando win that series in seven. J.J won the +/- battle against Ray Allen (he was the primary defender on Allen that series) in four of the seven games. Overall, Redick is the best option to be the 6th man off the bench for this team. Edited by: ToughJ.Riggins

This game just proves Redick is more than just a shooter, he can do a lot of other stuffs. He played pretty solid defense in that grind out game, forcing Terrence Williams to a horrible shooting night (3-17 FG's). Redick's defensive game is starting to remind me a bit of Dan Majerle, who was a solid defensive player during his playing days. Redick's really gotten a lot of respect now. He's good off the bench, and even better as a starter.

He had a bad shooting day though.  He didn't score any points.  Hopefully he will do better the next game.

Redick went 3-4 from the field (all from downtown) for 9 points with 3 rebounds and assists with 1 turnover. He's now shooting 41.3% FG and 42.3% 3-point, but the amazing stat is he's scored 10.3 PPG on only 7.75 attempts per game. This is an amazing 1.33 point per shot ratio. This is better than the great majority of the "superstar" guards do in scoring "efficiency" in the league. And he's significantly above Mickael Pietrus and Vince Carter in this category right now. According to Van Gundy, J.J's also become a good perimeter defender. He leads all SGs and SFs on the Magic in assists per 48 minutes! Bottom line: He's a pretty damn good player!

As always, TJR, brilliant analysis! JJ Redick has pretty much become an excellent player at the NBA level, despite limited playing minutes and shot attempts. Maybe within a year or two, he'll become a full-time starter, or a designated 6th man.

I'll check Redick, Carter and Pietrus's +/- count per minutes played and their points per shot number sometime next week. And I plan to look back at last year's playoffs to tally Lee, Pietrus and Redick's +/- per minute last playoffs when I get the opportunity (and their point per shot ratio). Bottom line is Redick needs serious minutes and I think Williams will get him the ball for open looks better than Nelson did while Nelson is healing from his knee injury...We'll see! I will give the Magic some credit. They now have JJ, R.Anderson,M.Gortat, and D.Anderson all playing some minutes. That is 4 whites out of 12 players. It is a start. They were not like that just 2 or 3 years ago.

Since I'm a stickler for accuracy I must correct that Redick is shooting 40.9% FGs right now (not 41.3%) and 42.3% from downtown. I also had to correct another mistake in a previous post. Redick is not leading Vince Carter in +/- ratio per minutes per game played. He still is a heck of an efficient player though- who is more efficient than most of the "superstar" guards in the league (as far as points per shot ratio) and he's become a good perimeter defender. He DOES lead the Magic swingmen (SGs and SFs) in assists per 48 minutes right now (Rashard Lewis is listed as a PF right now on the depth chart). Redick has become my favorite player because of the fact that he doesn't get anywhere near the respect he deserves from media like Rotowire and was formerly called a "bust". Adam Morrison looks like he is WELL ON HIS WAY to becoming a bust (unless he can revive his career), but J.J is looking pretty damn good for an 11th pick!

I still can't understand why Morrison is struggling so much in the NBA. The guy is a great shooter, has decent athletic ability, and has a Bird like mentality in the game. I followed him in college when him and Redick were competing for the scoring title and I thought he would at least be as good as Van Horn. Van Horn was also one of my favorite players and while he had a good NBA career I was expecting him to be a HOF type of player.

i was watching the magic game tonight on ESPN and this has to be the first time i can ever remember four white guys on the floor at the same time for one team. The magic had Jason Williams, Ryan Anderson, JJ Redick and Marcin Gortat all on the floor at the same time. The best part is they held their ground against the nearly all black heat squad that they were playng against.

Man I really like Ryan Anderson who is only 21 but plays with the composure of a seasoned veteran. So far the Magic have not missed Hedo at all b\c Ryan Andersondoes everything Hedo did butI feel is more athletic. Plus he is younger so in my eyes that gives him more upside. Go Magic here's to hoping they can sweep the black East (Boston, Cleveland)

I like what J.J has done this season so far. He isn't having a spectacular season but he's averaging 9.4 ppg in only 22 minutes of playing time per game. He's shooting a respectable 44 % from the field and 42 % from behind the arc. He is also playing good defense.

We had talked about this in the Kings' thread. I have seen the Kings field an all white lineup on the court this year. And the best part is that when I was watching this, it was against an all black Wizards 5 players and they increased the lead on them by a little.

I see some positive signs in the NBA. If we can get a few more super athletic white American guards in the league like Ben Woodside and Lee Cummard of last year coming back over from Europe- and Chris Kramer and Jon Scheyer in the league this year- the NBA will actually become tolerable. The caste system is already a little weaker in the NBA than NFL, but I see it weakening there faster.

The Toronto Raptors sometimes play a lineup of calderon, belinelli, turkoglu and bargnani at the same time. The NBA has improved this year however the discrimination that white players (particularely guards)face still needs to be addressed.

It's simply because, as has been noted in these forums before, there are no truly "castified" positions in the NBA, unlike football. If American white kids see that they have a chance to develop and play, then more will. In my cursory scrolling through college games this year, with few exceptions, I've noticed that D1 schools overall are looking much whiter than in past years, like particularly the odious 1990's.

When you take out the kickers, punters and long snappers The NBA is right around the same racially as the NFL. The difference is like you said-there are no "banned" positions for whites in the NBA.

The second difference is that unlike football- there is actually a decent sized interest gap per person in the U.S population between black and white kids I believe. Every time I drove through poorer neighborhoods when I lived in Jersey, I'd see some black kids playing hoops in their driveway or at public courts. I didn't see the same level of interest with white neighborhoods or with all the guys who my cousins knew, but of course that doesn't mean there aren't plenty of whites out there who are talented and dedicated.

Another thing I notice is that, in my opinion, whites are SLIGHTLY better football players than blacks overall at the highest levels, but if anything blacks are probably SLIGHTLY better better basketball players amongst elites than whites, but this is offset by all the Euros playing and the larger population of whites in the U.S.

This is why I think an NBA that was around 50-55% white would be fair, maybe about 30-35% white American and 20% Euro. However, an NFL that had the same percentage of whites would be unfair to whites. Just my humble opinion on what I think is fair.

BTW FootballDad, there are actually a fair number of D1 basketball programs that are pretty fair, but there are still way too many like Texas, Georgia Tech, UConn, Memphis, Kentucky and Georgetown that completely shut out whites. Overall, it's certainly better than D1 football to whites though.
