is the Michelle Wie thing over?

She was, by far, the most overpaid and overhyped athlete of all-time.

The overpay was really quite mind boggling. For instance, she was paid more money to do nothing in women's golf for 1 year, than what the first overall pick in the NBA draft is guaranteed over 3 years. That's completely insane.

If she ever becomes semi-competitive it will come back full force.

It appears that even my previous post understates the case. Michelle Wie was paid the astronomical figure of 19 million dollars in 2007.

SI's 50 highest paid athletes

This is more than Brett Favre, Dwayne Wade, and Tom Brady. So she was paid 19 million dollars to do nothing, in women's golf, a totally minor sport, while proven winners in some of the biggest sports in the world made less.

That's absolutely, positively insane. Anybody who thinks she is NOT the most overpaid athlete in history, must be crazy.

The Wie mania wasn't so much because she's not white, as there are plenty of good Asian players who are mostly ignored (as is Tiger Woods'half Asian background), but because the system was hoping that the amazon-like Wie could not only play with the men but even beat most of them, maybe even win a few PGA tournaments. What a great triumph that would be for feminists and white men-haters of all stripes and gender configurations. Mean time she can't evencompete withthe broads.

Check out the following recap of Michelle`s career from her Wikipedia entry:

Victories

[edit] Professional
none to date
Wie played her first professional event while still an amateur in April 2002. As of February 21, 2008, she had played in a total of 55 professional events as either an amateur or a professional: 42 against women on the LPGA Tour and 13 against men: 7 on the PGA Tour, 2 on the Japan Golf Tour, 1 on the European Tour, 1 on the Asian Tour, 1 on the Nationwide Tour, and 1 on the Canadian Tour.

[edit] Amateur
November 15-17, 2002: Hawaii State Open, Women's Division (Wie's last stroke-play victory) (67-71-70--208 (8 under), 13 strokes over Cindy Rarick)[39]
Wie won several other Hawaiian local and junior events during the years 2000 through 2002.[40][41]

June 17-22, 2003: U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links (Stroke play: 73-71--144 (even par); 18-hole matches: 2&1, 2&1, 5&4, 6&5, 5&4; 36-hole final: 1 up over Virada Nirapathpongporn)[42]
She has never won a 72-hole stroke-play event at any level.

She has no professional wins. Zip...Nada.

It bears repeating: She has never won a 72-hole stroke play event at any level.

She hasn`t won a stroke-play event of any kind since November 2002.

But she is a millionaire many times over, so I guess she can take solace in that fact.

Wow! I don't follow golf, so I wasn't aware of her abysmal record/lack of wins OR that she's so grossly overpaid. It's absolutely asinine for her (or anyone) to make that kind of money for playing a game. I think Don's correct that the MSM pushes her in hopes having a female (her being oriental is a plus for "diversity") who can compete with the (to-be-demonized) men (ala Annika Soremstam (sp?)). Pro athletes are totally overpaid & overhyped to begin with, BUT Wie takes the cake!

The whole circus was fairly insulting to me, especially this year, as american sports writers have come out bashing the Olympics as "something americans don't care about" and "can you name anybody on the track team?"

Well, when the american sports media spends all of it's time covering just 3 sports plus Woods and Wie, versus 20 years ago when it covered things more equally, how is any american supposed to know what is going on? We have absolute morons on television trying to sell us complete BS, like, golf is a major sport, and we should pay attention to a woman who can play with the men, and hey, let's give her 19 MILLION dollars, more than Tom Brady. It reached a fever pitch of absolute stupidity in 07.

I might be wrong about this, but when Bobby Kennedy (the runner, not JFK's brother) ran a sub 13 minute 5000 meters, he didn't get an SI cover.

Allan Webb should be a household name, but he's only known to track fans.

Jeremy Wariner should be a household name too.

Sports Illustrated used to cover many sports.

They treat certain major worldwide sports as marginal, and they wonder why the average stupid person on the street doesn't know anything about them.

Maybe if they started covering American track and field and some of the excellent white athletes there in, and fired some of the closet gays on their writing staff, then they can be a more useful publication instead of just pro black propaganda.

2 wie updates...she missed the cut again...and did anyone notice that she forgot to sign her scorecard 2-3 weeks ago, thereby disqualifying herself from continuing in an LPGA event?

Here's an article about her most recent missing of the cut.

Wie upbeat despite missing the cut

by Richard Field, 02 August 2008

Michelle Wie says there is room for optimism despite failing to make the cut at the Reno-Tahoe Open.

The American shot an 80, which consigned her to an eighth missed cut on the PGA Tour, but she thinks the shots of recovery are there.

"I feel my game is a lot better. Obviously the score doesn't show it, but I know what I need to work on," Wie said.

The question will now be asked is it folly for Wie to continue entering PGA events? But she is more optimistic.

"I think if I played a couple in a row, it would be a different story," added Wie.

"It's just hard to play one and then one maybe a year later. I think if I played eight in a row and I missed all eight, that would be a different story."

Here's the DQ story

Wie Forgets to Sign Scorecard, Has to Go Home

Posted Jul 19, 08 9:25 PM CDT in Sports

(AP) - Michelle Wie, playing her best golf of the year, forgot to sign her scorecard and was disqualified from the State Farm Classic in Illinois. Wie, 18, had finished the third round only one shot behind the leader. "I don't know why or how it happened," said Wie, who took no questions. Said the LPGA official who delivered the bad news to the teenager: "She was like a little kid after you tell them there's no Santa Claus."

Wie will miss out on a hefty paycheck. The winner gets $255,000 and second place pays $155,000, amounts that would have virtually guaranteed her a place on the LPGA Tour next year. Wie remains a part-time player trying to become a full-fledged tour member for the first time.

I wanted to add this article because it shows that the Wie circus *just keeps on keepin' on.* Parker McLachlan shoots a *course record* 62...but what is front page news? Wie's 80. It takes up 3/4 of the article.

Wie misses cut after shooting an 80

Published: August 01, 2008

RENO, Nev. (AP) â€â€￾ Michelle Wie failed in her eighth attempt to make the cut on the PGA Tour, shooting a second-round 80 at the Legends Reno-Tahoe Open Friday. Parker McLachlin tied the course record with a 62 to take a four-stroke lead over 1987 Masters winner Larry Mize and three others.

Wie was 1-over-par 73 Thursday as she attempted to become the first woman since World War II to make the cut on the PGA Tour. But a quintuple-bogey 9 Friday helped push her to 9-over 153 at the par-72 Montreux Golf & Country Club.

"I feel my game is a lot better. Obviously the score doesn't show it, but I know what I need to work on," Wie said. "I gave it my best today and I felt like I did a lot of good things and hopefully that outshines the ones I made mistakes on."

The 18-year-old, who was making her first PGA appearance since January 2007, had two bogeys and one birdie through her first nine holes and was within striking distance of the even-par cut line at the 7,472-yard mountain course.

But she had a double bogey on her 13th hole of the day after she hit her second shot over the green into heavy rough on the 518-yard, par-5 No. 4.

With a difficult downhill lie, her chip came up short, still in the rough. Her next pitch rolled over the green into the rough again before she finally chipped onto the green and two putted.

The quintuple-bogey 9 came four holes later on the 464-yard, par-4 eighth, when she had to take two penalty strokes.

Her first tee shot ended up with an unplayable lie in the trees and the second one went left into a waste area with sage brush and pine trees, where she had to take another drop and needed four more shots to reach the green. She finished with a birdie on the 626-yard, par-5 ninth.

Not since "Mildred" Babe Zaharias played at the 1945 Tucson Open has a woman made the cut on the PGA Tour.

Wie didn't know if she'd make another run at a PGA event in the future.

"I think if I played a couple (PGA events) in a row, it would be a different story. It's just hard to play one and then one maybe a year later," she said. "I think if I played eight in a row and I missed all eight, that would be a different story."

McLachlin, who has five Top 25 PGA finishes this year and ranks 98th on the tour money list, birdied seven of the last 10 holes and had 10 on the day in a bogey-free round. His stellar wedge play put him within 7 feet of the pin seven times - twice inside 2 feet and once to 4 inches.

"Nothing really crazy. It was just pretty solid," McLachlin said about his round during calm conditions in the morning that left him at 14-under 130 after two days of play.

"Everything went pretty smoothly out there. I hit a lot of fairways, lots of greens and made a bunch of 10-footers. I mean, just kind of the way you like to draw it up," he said.

McLachlin missed a 4-foot birdie attempt on the par-4 18th that would have broken the record Bill Glasson set in 2005 and Joe Ogilvie matched in 2006. His previous best on tour was a 65, though he said he shot a 63 once on the Nationwide Tour and carded a 59 at the course he represents in Hawaii, where he was born and grew up.

"I didn't know what the course record was but I caught myself thinking about 59 at No. 14. I had like about a 10-footer," said McLachlin, who had birdied six of the previous seven holes.

"I thought, `If I birdie the last five holes I can shoot 59.' And that's just the worst thing to think. So I made par there," he said, as well as at the 15th.

Mize, who turns 50 in September and hasn't won on tour since 1993, followed an opening round 68 with a 66 in windier afternoon conditions to get to 10-under 134 - the first time in three years he's opened a tourney with two rounds in the 60s. He was in a four-way tie for second with Australian Nick Flanagan, who shot a 65 on Friday, and John Merrick and England's Brian Davis, who both shot consecutive 67s.

Bob Estes and Harrison Frazar were another stroke back at 9-under 135.

"It was tricky out there sometimes with the wind, so to get out of there with a 66, I'm pleased," Mize said. "I'm trying to get ready for the Senior Tour so I'm trying to play well out here."

It looks like Michelle Wie will earn her LPGA Tour card for 2009. She is tied for 3rd in the qualifying tournament after 3 rounds, and the top 20 automatically get their tour cards.

It will be interesting to see if she can finally make something of her career next year. I wouldn't place any bets on it, though.

THe only sure bet is that even if she stinks like shes been doing the past two years she will get more media coverage than Paula Creamer, Morgan Pressel and Nataly Gulbis put together.

Wie was leading the LPGA tournament in her home state of Hawaii this past weekend before choking badly on the back nine of the final round and blowing a three shot lead to Angela Stanford (who was about the only White on the leader board among a sea of Asians). The media coverage was as ridiculous as ever, even before the event began. Wie actually had to earn her way onto the LPGA this year rather than having everything handed to her, so now she's a "rookie," which is the story line the Caste clowns will be breathlessly following all year.

I still don't understand the fascination with Wie. It can't be because she's Asian, because the LPGA is filled with them and they are all no-names as far as the media is concerned. Itmust haveto do with her Amazonian size, which is attractive to feminists, lesbians and other man-haters, and the potential the system sees in her to be good enough to play with and defeat the men pros. Meanwhile, she has yet to win a tournament in six years of playing LPGA events.

It might be because of age. Wasn't she 12 or 13 when she played in her first tournament

This girl is a disgrace to the sport, but the whole blame goes to the media, for giving her too much hype. I'm glad she has all but disappeared from the spotlight. She has lots of money (millions in fact) anyway to boot for the rest of her life.

Considering she is tall for an Asian girl (6'0), she should have gone to tennis instead. I'm celebrating my

"Is the Michelle Wie thing over?"

No, not by a longshot. I was in Pittsburgh this weekend to watch my hapless Pirates and stretched across one of the bridges was a huge banner to promote the upcoming LPGA event at Oakmont.

Of course it has Michelle Wie on it with the caption, "Wow Wie!"

Such an accomplished player to be the face of the LPGA Tour.
