It just goes to show that most kids from a black\white couple see themselves as black as do most other people, which is why a lot of people on this site have aBIG problem with it.

There were 784,764 U.S. residents who described their race as white and black in the last census. But that number didn't include Laura Martin, whose father is black and mother is white.

"I've always just checked black on my form," said Martin, a 29-year-old university employee in Las Vegas. She grew up surrounded by black family and friends, listening to black music and active in black causes â€" "So I'm black."

Nor did it include Steve Bumbaugh, a 43-year-old foundation director in Los Angeles, who also has a black father and white mother. "It's not as if I'd have been able to drink out of the white and colored water fountains during Jim Crow," he said. "And I most assuredly would have been a slave. As far as I'm concerned, that makes me black."

Friday was the deadline to mail 2010 census forms. Although the results are expected to show an increase in the number of multiracial people, some African-Americans with one white parent are deciding to simply "stay black."

This is only the second census to allow people to identify themselves by more than one race. About 7 million people, or 2.4 percent of the U.S. population, chose that option in 2000.

It's impossible to know how many of the 35 million people counted as "black alone" in 2000 have a white parent. But it's clear that the decision to check one box â€" or more â€" on the census is often steeped in history, culture, pride and mentality.

Exhibit A is President Barack Obama. He declined to check the box for "white" on his census form, despite his mother's well-known whiteness.

Obama offered no explanation, but Leila McDowell has an idea.

"Put a hoodie on him and have him walk down an alley, and see how biracial he is then," said McDowell, vice president of communications for the NAACP.

"Being black in this country is a political construct," she said. "Even though my father is white and I have half his genes, when I apply for a loan, when I walk into the car lot, when I apply for a job, they don't see me as half white, they see me as black. If you have any identifying characteristics, you're black."

There is evidence, though, that while some may be resistant to the idea of identifying as multiracial, white attitudes are moving in that direction. In a January poll by the Pew Research Center, 53 percent of white people said Obama is "mixed race" and 24 percent said he is black. In contrast, 55 percent of black people said Obama is black and 34 percent said he is mixed.

This also may represent a new twist on the "one drop" concept, which for centuries held that even one black ancestor made a person black. Now a brown-skinned man is president, and for many white people, one white parent means you are NOT black.

But the logic is simple for Ryan Graham, the brown-skinned son of a white-black marriage who defines himself as multiracial.

"Say you're wearing a black-and-white shirt. Somebody asks, 'What color is your shirt?' It's black and white. There you go. People ask me, 'What race are you?' I say I'm black and white. It's that simple," said Graham, a 25-year-old sales consultant from Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

Graham's mother founded Project Race in 1991 to fight for a multiracial classification in the census. Graham testified before Congress on the issue when he was 8. He's disappointed that Obama chose not to check the white box on the census, but said that people should be allowed to define themselves however they choose.

"It's frustrating from a point that there's a lot of multiracial people out there who see Obama out there doing that, knowing that he's multiracial, and they think maybe that's the right choice. But there's a lot of people saying maybe it's the wrong choice."

For those who decline to check the white box: "Think about your family, think about what makes you you," Graham said. "How you are, who you are, where you come from."

Most experts say there is very little genetic difference between people of different races â€" as little as 1 percent. "Race is a social concept, not a scientific one," goes a much-repeated quote from J. Craig Venter, who led one of the first projects to decipher the entire human genome.

That's one reason why the American racial system is "facing taxonomical meltdown," said Nell Painter, a Princeton University history professor and author of "The History of White People."

"The complications of the classification system, the resistance that people are mounting, the weight of immigration and marriage mixing, young people are checking more than one box," Painter said. "The system might just all fall away."

Which would leave blackness to be defined person by person, according to how they think, the way they look at the world â€" blackness as a state of mind.

Tony Spearman, author of "Why Am I Black," was born to two white parents. He grew up in a mostly black town, worked at a historically black college, taught physics to predominantly black students.

On every census since 1996, Spearman has marked one box: black.

"My wife got angry at me, my father got angry at me," said Spearman, 42. "They told me, 'You gotta be truthful!' I said, 'I am!' ... Race is a foolish thing. It has nothing to do with our humanness."

"The system is breaking down, and I hope it continues to break down," Spearman . "Because when it fully breaks down, we'll start to measure people by the content of their hearts."

I don't have a problem with them identifying as black, they are. It's the 'one drop' rule. It's more desirable to be 100% white, everyone knows it and if you are not then you know you can't fake it. It's like a non-purebreed dog, it's only considered the proper breed if it's not mixed. Anyway those losers will get AA preferences when they check black which they will need because they aren't fully white and capable of getting by without the help. So it makes sense for them.

In any civil service job it helps to be non-White. If two applicants score similar scores the non White one is more likely to be hired. It will be interesting to see what will happen when Whites become the plurality in the US and Canada.Edited by: white is right

Plurality is when you have the largest percentage but not a majority. Similar to what Brazil is as far as I know.

Hahaha so true. PBS had a series on peoples ethnicity and the immigrant experience. All of the Blacks were White (mathematically speaking). Even the Mestiza Eva Longoria was 3/4rs White 1/5 Aboriginal and the rest was *******. The nerdy host took it like it was water off his back but Longoria was shocked that she was so White.

This is a good thing. We don't want them to identify as white or with their white ancestry. Even if they are identifying as black because it is better to be black in our anti-white society, this still works to our advantage.

We don't want to define whiteness down and end up with a Latin American definition of "white."

The history in the United States of classifying anyone having noticeable black ancestry as black has been crucial in preventing the mongrelization of white Americans.

This is the funniest topic I've seen in this site!

jon-kate-gosselin.jpg

Gosselin Family

The Gosselin kids are 75% White, yet they're incredibly Asian in appearance. Tiger Woods is 75% Asian, yet he's incredibly black in appearance. Jason Kidd, Derek Jeter, and Kris Humphries are 50% black, yet they look incredibly white. Danny Lopez is as white as they come:

Danny and Bonnie Lopez

Taylor Lautner has some Native American blood in him, and he looks more Native than white.

What am I getting at????

It means it should go down to physical appearance. You can be 75% white and still be considered non-white depending on your facial appearance. Assuming that's the Latin American description for white.

Eminem may be white, but he's as black as they come. While Sidney Poitier is as well mannered as any "real" white person.

I have never heard a White Nationalist complain about Eva Longoria being married to Tony Parker.

Essentially, we all knew she was mixed, and she doesn't have any Aryan features anyways. She also has a Chihuahua face.

Same with the Kardashians. But, in that case, a legitimate complaint can be made that the Zionist OVER-EXPOSURE of them is intended to get other girls into becoming coal-burners. If you have kids, KILL the TalmudVision!!

I never thought of her as "White". She is clearly too native and even though she only has one full blooded ******* ancestor going back 250 years. She has a Puerto Rican look due to that ancestor. If someone in Latin America looks like her and says they are "White" it's usually because they among the social elite and don't want to be associated with "Mongrolized" underclass.

white is right,

To clarify, I wasn't trying to imply anything towards you. I like your description:

"She has a Puerto Rican look due to that ancestor."

Actually I always considered Longoria white. In fact, isn't Tony Parker majority white (he may not think so but with admixture he sure looks at least 75%). The one-drop rule is good for preserving our race, but other than that it is quite obvious Parker gets his coordination and size from his white ancestry, and Longoria gets what little looks she has from the conquistadores or whatever.

Winston Chuchill's mother was 1/4 Iroquois, yet it didn't show physically otherwise. He was 10-15% Native American Indian. I still say it goes down to physical appearance and religion:

White and Christian - FOREMOST
White and Jewish - 2nd Foremost
White and Muslim - almost UNACCEPTABLE

Tony Parker is only 6-foot-4 or something, so I'm not sure what you mean? There are dark-skinned blacks that are taller.

When it comes to the media and it's ethnic/racial agenda, the media might want us to believe something that's not true. This was readily apparent during the Saints' Super Bowl run when the media kept showing Kim K in the press box, and then Bigunreal said that the media talked to Kim K after the Saints' won the Super Bowl, and I think Bigunreal said that Reggie Bush was next to her as well.

The media "crowned" Kim K as a White women (and "a role model"), but they only did so because they want authentic White women to miscegenate. The media can certainly be clever; I can't deny them that.

Agreed Daedlift. That Kim K girl isn't much of a looker, so I certainly wasn't paying much attention either way. In fact, Hollywood doesn't have that many pretty women at all.

Still 6'4" is large and white people are typically taller than blacks on average.

Longoria looks Sicilian or Latina, but I never looked into her background. The (overexposed) Kadashians are half European (Scottish, Dutch) & half Armenian (via their Dad). They look (borderline) White, but views amongst WNs vary. IMO, all the above are mudsharks.
