You need to work on your speed without losing power. That's something you can ask your football coaches about. Talk to some people in your school that teach and run track.Use the Internet todo research on speed training techniques, diet, andthe best kinds of workouts for a running backand start teaching yourself.

on a more serious note, like Don said you should defnitely work on your speed and agility, because with your size you need to be elusive and fast to even get any looks as a runningback... good luck to you and main thing is to stay dedicated to training and remember your motivation...

5.3 is not so bad for a 8th grader, you have still got a lot of growing to do. I'd work on the muscle systems, check out some posts in the Health section, the guys there have mentioned on how to buildthe fast twitch muscles so desirable in a running back. We have some guys who are playing or recently played Div I ball, I;m sure they will soon chime in with some good advice.

Definitely work on your speed, do agility drills like I'm sure you saw at the camp you went do. Pull tires while running, anything that will give you more resistance will help you get faster. Also, work on your explosiveness of the line. If you can hit the hole quick, and use your agility to sidestep some guys, you don't have to be the fastest guy in the world. I would run cone drills as well. Seperate them 5-10 yards, and work on them year-round just like in practice. What will help you improve and possibly get some looks at RB will be year around training. The discipline and hard work will pay off for you, as long as your coach is open to someone else running the ball.

Don't be afraid of some hard work. I was a lot like you at your age and was able to develop my speed during my freshman year in high school. The best way to get faster is a) hill training b)weight training and c)plyometrics. Find a long, flat slope of 50 yds or more and 10-15% grade. Do 10 sprints uphill at maximum speed. Rest in between sprints for enough time that allows you to run each sprint at full speed. After that, run 10 sprints downhill at max speed. Uphill sprinting builds leg strength and power, downhill sprinting increases you stride frequency (turnover). Do this routine twice a week.

For weight training, concentrate on doing squats and power clean to develop explosiveness. For plyometrics, get a wood box approximately 20"-24" tall. Stand on top of the box, step off, and jump back on top of the box. Repeat the process 15-20 times as quickly as you can. The key to all of these exercises is high intensity. If you have to rest in between sets to keep the intensity high, that's ok.

Using a similar routine over one summer, I was able to lower my 40 yd time from a 5.0 sec to a 4.6 sec by my sophomore year in high school. One of the best ways to attract the attention of your high school coach is to be the fastest (or one of the fastest) kids on the team. If you want to get a Div. 1 schlorship, you need to be playing varsity ball by your junior year so that the scouts can get a look at you going into your senior year. Good luck!Edited by: SteveB

I played a little bit ofRb in high school and I play college football (im currently between schools as a sophomore) heres some things I would do.

First thing you need to do is have a good balanced diet. I know its hard asa high schoolerI did not always have a good diet back then. Eat lots of Protein like beef and chicken, you need Protein to build mucle. Eat a Protein bar befor and after you work out. Cut down on the junk food.

Second I'd hit the weight room. If your football team has a workout plan follow it. Squats (its very important to use corect form with yourchest out. Use a belt and go below paralel.) and powercleans are the best lifts for football. Also, do alot of ab and back work. Remember you are trying to build yor fast twitch muscles so do fewer reps with heaver weight.

Strech, flexibility is very important to speed.

Work on your speed. I If your football team has a workout plan follow it but I'll also tell you exercises to do fon your own. Ifyou want to run track I would only do that though if you could run the 100 though. If not Run sprints. 10s to work on your takeoff, 40s obviously, and 100s. Work on your short sprints more though. Do plyometrics, Run up and down hills with a slight gradent, and run with a sled.

When it comes to football season learn the playbook, don't fumble, and practice hard. Those things tend to imprese coaches.

My last peice of advice would be to belive in yourself, your young and have a lot of growing to do. Don't let others discurage you. If you have any questions ask.

one thing on squats, he shouldn't go with too much weight seeing how he's still growing... just do explosive reps with moderate weight

Backrow your your probably right there.I did not mean overly heavy weight that would strain his joints but reaps of8 or 6. It realy won't do much good to put light weight on there anddo a set of 20. I should have been more specific. As long as you use correct form injurys should not occur. for the first few mounths take it easy in the weight room and work on your form. Kids most offen get hurt trying to show off with heavy weights.

Good point Backrow. A couple of other points, don't follow workouts you see in a bodybuilding magazine. Bodybuilders use isolation exercises which won't help you with athletics. Also, don't compare your size to players you see in college and try to gain a bunch of weight. You are still growing and when your body is ready to put on weight, you will. When I was playing in high school, I was 150 lbs and tried everything to gain weight. My freshman year in college, I grew an inch and gained 25 lbs of muscle without even trying. Just keep working out and eating right and it will happen naturally.

Don't drink pop (or, depending on where you're from, soda).

Combine a variety of leg strength exercises with sprints. Find some form of running that you like to do competitevly. Pick-up basketball is a great way to enjoy runnning if you play it at a fast pace with the intent of getting faster. Oh and stay away from milkshakes.

amd like most of the other posters i would recommend not stressing too much about your size since you're still growing and just working on your speed and agility in ways mentioned above... good luck bud

Bodybuilding.com has a lot of good workout programs for athletics. Just search for "football workouts and speed." You will find a lot of workouts to increase your 40 yard dash time. Also, Everlast has some really cheap DVD's (10 dollars each) that teach speed and agility. I have purchased both the speed and agility DVD and they are very informative. I wish I knew about these when I played in highschool. Good luck.

I was a short, white, halfback in high school. My 40 time went from a 5 flat as a freshman to a 4.5 by my junior year.I agree with some of the posts above, squat and power clean are great exercises to increase speed. Creatine is a good supplement. Take it with grape juice so it will load into your muscles better. Drink plenty of water while on it. Cycle it, take it six weeks on six weeks off. Also, I found that for increasing strength the Buckeye Power Workout works well. Find out your max for power clean, squat, bench, and incline ,then use the buckeye to increase your strength in these core lifts. Hammer curls are good for helping you hold onto the ball. Working calves is good for everything. Stay away from alcohol it eats muscle and avoid it especially while taking creatine, its worse then for some reason. Stay away from the roids especially while you're in high school. They may stunt growth. Also, stanozolol or winstrol , probably the most popular, can make you tear hamstrings ,ligaments etc. That's enough for now. Good luck and keep plugging. If you keep working someone will get hurt, fail, whatever and you'll get your shot.

I don't know what my 40 time was in 8th grade, but
it was probably around 5.7-6.0. I now run a 4.8. I was
really clumsy when I was younger. I worked on power squatting,
plyometric explosion drills, and short sprints. You'll get
faster if you stay in shape and run a lot. Do some explosion
drills and bulk up. You've got a lot of time.

The key is consistency. That is the toughest part.

My advice is not to give up on yourself. You are growing and are developing still. Follow your coaches workout to the t without hurting yourself. Make sure your form on all exercises is done precisely, and if you don't understand how to do an exercise ask your coach to show you and work with you. Don't be shy about anything and do everything with eager anticipation and willingness to get better at and be the best you can be. Don't let others put you down. Show coach you want to play and you are interested. Be enthusiastic about it. Give it your best and think D-1 college scholarship.

5'7" 140 with a 5.3 40 if you want the truth...have you considered duck hunting or bass fishing? Your race is irrelevant to the numbers and reality they give.

It depends on his physical maturity. If he is built like a junior high kid then he could get significantly faster. Does he even know how to sprint properly?

On the surface that time does look slow for a college prospect but these factors could give him a sub 5 ability with ease but to get a serious a look he would need to make a quantum leap as you are inferring.

The OP hasn't been on the site in 12 1/2 years; I think it's fair to say he didn't make the NFL. Geez, talk about dredging up an old thread for no good reason. . .
