How long can the nfl ignore the white rb?

I just wanted to start a post about the revival of white running backs in Div. IA College Football. I am so excited with the number of kids starting to get to run the ball both exclusively and as backups. I cannot remember a time in my life that there has been so many white running backs to root for. With the success of guys like Brian Leonard and Jacob Hester last year. Now we have a bunch of our guys either starting or contributing on a weekly basis. The fact that we have made a dent in the ncaa and are continuing to make strides gives me alot of encouragment.

The NFL is going to have to start to take notice of guys like Jake Sharp, Toby Gerhart, Sam McGuffie and others to follow. These guys are just too good to continue to ignore. McGuffie and Sharp have as much speed as any running back in the nfl right now. Gerhart brings power with good speed as well. How long can the nfl ignore this? When will the fans, scouts, coaches and owners recognize what is happening. I really feel that better days are coming. People will eventually start to wake up and realize that whites can play the running back postiion. Wait until they see the amount of jerseys they will sell if a guy like McGuffie is a starter. I can't wait. We still have a ways to go but I am going to stay optomistic. Things are slowly looking up. Keep breaking down barriers guys. This could be the start of something big!

It's great that we have more and more running backs on the college level. Another thing I am hoping for which hasn't happened yet is more white corners. We still have very few whites playing cornerback.

Very good post WL. And I do share some of your optimism. If Sharp and Gerhart continue to produce star numbers in their tough conferences and measure up with their peers at the NFL combine in football strength and agility drills (as they will), what possible excuse could there be for them not to be first day draft picks in the NFL and play? Jake Sharp not only has 4.38 40 speed, but he has 10.4x 100 meter speed too!

McGuffie doesn't have freakish track speed, but has freakish football speed. Gerhart is a lot like Chris Beanie Wells as a big cutback power runner with 4.5 speed.

Maybe in the future because of the changes happening, more smaller RBs like David Sinisi and Danny Woodhead, will be able to star in Div. IA instead of IAA. And maybe a guy like Cory McCaffrey will think about transfering!

i dont know, ive been pessimistic ever since jacob hester didnt get a shot to run when lt was doing terrible. im starting to think in order for a white to start at tailback hed have to have the moves/speed/agility of barry sanders and the power/size of mike alstott

This was a topic in 2008. Here's an article from 2010 on how the Bucs have already parted ways with David McCarty..

TROY â€" David McCarty feels like he's in great shape.

It's his physical health, not his conditioning, that the Tampa Bay Bucs were a bit concerned with over last week.

Invited to the Bucs' rookie camp, McCarty was sent home â€" and released â€" by the Bucs after an abnormality on his electrocardiogram conducted during his physical with the Bucs. (REALLY??)

McCarty, overlooked in the NFL draft despite 4,287 career rushing yards a University at Albany, had been thrilled by the Bucs' invitation. As it turned out, the weekend was "pretty much a big waste of time."Â

Some suggest carrying the ball 330 times per season may have caught up with McCarty but Bucs doctors said simple stress or too much caffeine intact could cause an irregular EKG reading.

The team said two other rookies had similar readings.

McCarty also said he plans to see his personal physician this week.

"No, I've never had anything like that before,"Â he said. "I'm going to see my own doctor and get everything checked out. I've already made appointments."Â

The Gansevoort native had to deal with hip and hamstring injuries during the 2009 season â€" his senior year â€" at Albany. The maladies kept his yardage gained figure under 1,000 at 934.

"You battle through those, you feel great and then this happens,"Â he said.

McCarty also said the Bucs suggested that they may take another look at him.

"Yeah, they said they'd call back in a few weeks,"Â he said. "They haven't signed any (new) running back. I don't know if they were just blowing smoke but they said invite me back down and take another look at me."Â

In addition, except for former Auburn U. star Cadillac Williams (5-foot-11, 204), the 6-0, 192-pound McCarty is bigger than any of the Tampa Bay RBs.

"It seems they brought in a lot of smaller, speedier backs,"Â he said. (AKA Black backs)

In the meantime, McCarty may play for the United Football League's Hartford Colonials.

"Tony Sparano is the D-line coach there,"Â McCarty said of his former UAlbany teammate. "It's a nice opportunity for me."Â

The UFL is a five-team league that plays an eight-game schedule beginning in early September. The Hartford team played in New York last season and did not win a game.

"It's pretty much a farm league for the NFL,"Â McCarty said. "I go for a tryout the week after next. Real good opportunity."Â

The former La Salle Institute standout says he'd love to be in the Bucs camp come late July, however.

"I'm in very good shape,"Â he said. "All I've been doing is working out. I haven't been able to find a job and that sucks, too. (Get used to it

"I'll get this (irregular heartbeat) straightened out and take it from there,"Â he said.Edited by: celticdb15

I'd like to know what was the cardiac arrhythmia . There is no arrhythmia except for sinus tachycardia which could be caused by "stress" or caffeine. But a well conditioned athletic such as McCarty would have a heart rate of closer to 50 to 60 beats per minutes, even if he was very nervous. At least McCarty has a chance to make the team in Hartford since the D line coach is his former teammate.

Morris probably didn't know the dude was White when they signed him and there was NO way he was going to keep a White RB. That ******* is a straight up racist and so is most of the local media in the Tampa Bay area. Apparently Sabby is the only thing preventing the Bucs from contending even though he's an above average safety...

Really sucks for David McCarty. How can anyone ignore his impressive resume and overall capability just because he's white?

If the reason is because he's not good enough (often applied to white basketball players), then it doesn't get any lamer than this.

Lots of gifted white athletes out there and they get phased out just because of their white skin. If that's not racism, then I don't know what is.Edited by: j41181

Your are right. McCarty was 220 not 190lbs. When Morris heard a running back who is 220 ran a 4.48 at pro day, he just said invite him assuming no white boy with that size could run a 4.48. When they saw he was white they made up the BS about his EKG. It goes against human physiology. McCarty said he was doing "nothing but working out" for the past 2 months. I guarantee you his heart rate was probably 60 but the racist NFL can get away with anything.

UAlbany's coach Bob Ford must be one of the few coaches in Division I A-AA who really shows no preference for blacks at skill positions. That was probably a major reason Dillon Romaine chose UAlbany , after all the discrimination he suffered. UAlbany had a white FS Dave Casale just sign with the Montreal Alouettes of the CFL. I think Casale has a guaranteed contract. The caste king Mel Kiper ranked Casale as 81st among safeties
